How the maps work
Goat Maps always shows one basemap, the map underneath everything else. On top of it you can turn on as many overlays as you like, and your own tracks, routes and waypoints are drawn over both.
- On the web, open the layers button on the map to choose a basemap and overlays.
- On iPhone, tap the Map Menu button on the map screen. See how to configure the map.
Contours and slope angle shading
Contour lines aren't a separate layer. They're part of the Topo and Hybrid basemaps, drawn on your device from elevation data in feet or meters, following your units setting.
Slope angle shading colors the terrain by how steep it is, for spotting avalanche terrain or finding a gentler way up. It works over every basemap and is free on the web: turn it on in the web map's layer settings. You can pick a preset or make your own shading by slope angle, elevation or aspect. The avalanche terrain preset shades slopes from yellow at 26° through orange and red up to purple, blue and black on the steepest ground. It's computed from the same elevation data as the contours: Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data, from USGS 3DEP, SRTM and other elevation models.
Free and membership
All of these maps are free to view except Land Ownership and the two latest satellite overlays, which come with a membership. A membership also lets you download maps for offline use in the iPhone app. You can download the basemaps and the US overlays; Land Ownership and the latest satellite imagery are online only.
