What it shows

Each National Forest publishes a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). It shows the roads and trails where you're allowed to drive, which vehicles may use them, and in which seasons. Driving a road that isn't on it is illegal. This overlay puts the MVUM data for every National Forest and Grassland on one map, on top of your basemap.

Tap a road for its number, surface, maintenance level and seasonal status, and whether it's open to passenger cars, high-clearance vehicles, ATVs and motorcycles, with the dates for each. Trails show their number, class and the vehicles allowed.

Use it to plan the drive to a trailhead or a dispersed campsite, or to check whether an OHV route is open.

On the map

The overlay appears from zoom 6. Road and trail names appear from zoom 12.

Where the data comes from

The U.S. Forest Service's national MVUM data (Road_MVUM and Trail_MVUM), published on the FSGeodata Clearinghouse. The Forest Service updates it forest by forest as the maps change.

The legal document is the printed or PDF MVUM from each National Forest, not this data. Designations change, and the copy in Goat Maps can be a season behind. Before you drive anything you're unsure of, check the forest's current MVUM. It's on the forest's website, and ranger stations hand it out free.

Coverage

National Forests and National Grasslands across the United States, including Alaska and Puerto Rico.
