What it shows

Hybrid puts the most useful parts of the Topo map on top of satellite imagery. You see the ground as it looks from above, with trails, roads, water and names drawn over it so you can still find your way.

  • Satellite imagery underneath, the same imagery as the Satellite basemap.
  • Trails as white dotted lines and roads in tan, styled to stand out on imagery.
  • Contour lines in white, with elevation labels in feet or meters.
  • Rivers, streams and lakes, parks and protected areas, boundaries, and labels for places, peaks and mountain ranges.

Hybrid leaves out Topo's hillshade and land cover, which the imagery already shows, and its house numbers. The map legends help article has the Hybrid legend.

When to use it

Imagery shows what a topo map can't, like whether a slope is open or forested and where the snow is. That makes Hybrid handy for picking a line off trail or checking a campsite, and for matching what you see from a ridge to the map.

Where the data comes from

  • Imagery: Sentinel-2 cloudless by EOX (contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data, 2022) when zoomed out, and MapTiler Satellite from zoom 13 in.
  • Trails, roads and names: OpenStreetMap, with mountain range names from the GMBA Mountain Inventory.
  • Contours: drawn on your device from the same elevation data as Topo, Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data.

The imagery isn't live. For a recent view of the ground, turn on the Satellite - Latest overlay.

Offline

Hybrid is free to view on the web and on iPhone. With a membership, you can download it in the iPhone app. The downloaded imagery goes to zoom 12; the sharper imagery from zoom 13 in needs a connection.
