Satellite in Goat Maps
How it looks in the app Free

What it shows

Satellite is imagery of the whole world with no labels, roads or trails drawn on top. That makes it the clearest view of the ground itself, good for reading terrain and seeing where there's forest or snow. Your own tracks, routes and waypoints still show on it.

If you want trails and names over the imagery, use Hybrid instead.

Where the data comes from

  • Zoomed out, to zoom 12: Sentinel-2 cloudless by EOX IT Services, a cloud-free mosaic of the whole world at 10 m per pixel made from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2 satellites (contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data, 2022).
  • Zoom 13 and closer: MapTiler Satellite, which combines satellite imagery with aerial photos in many countries for a much sharper picture.

Both are mosaics built from imagery taken at different times, so the picture can be a few years old in places. For recent imagery, turn on Satellite - Latest or Satellite - Latest Cloudless with a membership.

Coverage

The whole world.

Offline

Satellite is free to view on the web and on iPhone. With a membership, you can download it in the iPhone app, to zoom 12. The sharper imagery from zoom 13 in needs a connection.

Try Goat Maps free.

Topo and satellite maps, slope angle shading, public land, track recording, waypoints and GPX import are free. Membership adds offline maps and the route planner for $29.99 a year.
