What it shows

Historic Fires shows where wildfires have burned in the United States, labeled with each fire's name and year. Tap a fire for its name, the year it burned and the agency that responded.

A burn changes the land for years. Fallen trees can block the trail, and the shade and water may be gone. After rain, burned slopes can come loose. The overlay lets you spot old burns before you go. To see how an area has recovered, compare it with recent imagery from Satellite - Latest.

Legend

Burned areas are filled in red. The more recent the fire, the brighter the red:

Fill Fire year
Bright red 2020 to 2022
Red 2010 to 2019
Dark red 2000 to 2009
Darkest red Before 2000

Fires from 2023 are outlined but not filled.

From zoom 8, fires since 2000 are labeled with their name and year. Older fires get a year label from zoom 12.

Where the data comes from

The National Interagency Fire Center's interagency fire perimeter history. It combines final fire perimeters from the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, CAL FIRE and Alaska's fire service.

The copy in Goat Maps was made in late 2023, so fires since then are missing. It only covers past fires, so for active fires and closures, check InciWeb and the land manager.
