How it looks in the app Membership

What it shows

Satellite - Latest Cloudless is recent imagery from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2 satellites, like Satellite - Latest, except that it skips cloudy images. Where the newest image is covered in cloud, it falls back to the most recent clear one, so you nearly always see the ground.

For most trip planning, that makes it the better choice: snow cover, burn scars, flooded rivers and new logging roads without clouds in the way. Use Satellite - Latest when you need the very newest image and don't mind the occasional cloudy one.

Resolution

Sentinel-2 sees the ground at 10 m per pixel. That's good for snow, water and forest, but not sharp enough for a single trail. The overlay appears from zoom 8, and its sharpest imagery is at zoom 14.

How recent it is

Most places are photographed every few days. Because cloudy images are skipped, the picture can be older where it's often cloudy, such as rainforests and coastal mountains. Treat it as the latest clear view, not today's.

Where the data comes from

Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data, processed by Sentinel Hub, from the European Union's Sentinel-2 mission.

Coverage

All land from 56° S to about 83° N.

Satellite - Latest Cloudless comes with a Goat Maps membership, on the web and on iPhone. It's online only, so it needs a connection.
