Zugspitz Ultratrail course maps and aid stations

Seven races that all finish in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, from a 16 km evening run out of Grainau to a 100 miler around the Zugspitze.

June 17 to 20, 2027 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria

The Zugspitz Ultratrail, or ZUT, runs every June around the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. The organizer calls it Germany's biggest trail running event. It began in Grainau in 2011 and joined the UTMB World Series in 2026. The 2027 edition is June 17 to 20.

Every race finishes on Richard-Strauss-Platz in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The ZUT100, the Ultratrail and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Trail start there too. The others start in the towns they're named after: Grainau and Mittenwald in Bavaria, Ehrwald and Leutasch across the border in Tyrol. From Schloss Elmau on, the five longest races share the same last 34 km or so, over Hochalm to the finish.

The map shows the courses the race pages carry now, which are the 2026 ones; the organizer says the 2027 details come closer to the event. Every race requires the course track on your GPS watch or phone, and a phone that can call from Austria as well as Germany. Download the map before you go: GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The ZUT100 leaves Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 8 p.m. on Thursday and has 42.5 hours. It goes past the Eibsee and Gamsalm to Pestkapelle and over the course's high point, about 2,200 m at the Kothbachsattel, to Hämmermoosalm. Then it drops south through Straßberghaus, Arzkasten and Biberwier and climbs back to Pestkapelle and Hämmermoosalm for a second time, before the Ultratrail's way home by Mittenwald, Schloss Elmau and Hochalm. The longest gap is Straßberghaus to Arzkasten, about 16 km.

Your drop bags wait at Biberwier and Schloss Elmau. About 6.5 km after Biberwier there's a 2 km stretch where you wear a helmet. The race page headlines 167 km and 8,205 m; its course data, used here, measures 163.4 km. The race was first run in 2025, and in 2026 heat and storms cut it to 107 km. This is the 2026 course.

The Ultratrail starts at 10 p.m. on Friday, with 27 hours to finish. It's the ZUT100 without the southern loop: Eibsee, Gamsalm, Pestkapelle and the high ground to Hämmermoosalm through the night, then east to Hubertushof, Mittenwald and Schloss Elmau. The last climb takes you from Laubhütte up to Hochalm at 1,701 m before the descent past Trögllift.

Your drop bag waits at Hubertushof, at 54.6 km. In 2026 the heat and storm risk cut it to 74 km from Leutasch. The map shows the 2026 course.

The Ehrwald Trail starts at 11 p.m. on Friday at Hölzli 7 in Ehrwald, Austria, and has 22 hours. It climbs about 600 m to Pestkapelle in the first 6 km, joining the Ultratrail route on the way up, and follows it to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The organizer calls it a tough ultra for experienced trail runners. Your drop bag waits at Hubertushof. In 2026 it was cut short with the Ultratrail. The map shows the 2026 course.

The Leutasch Trail has been part of the ZUT since 2011. It starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday from the Freizeitzentrum in Leutasch-Weidach and climbs straight away toward the Scharnitzjoch, about 2,050 m. About 6 km in, below the col, it joins the Ultratrail route. The first aid station, Hubertushof, is 15.3 km in. The organizer describes a runnable middle between that first climb and the one up to the Osterfelder at the end. In 2026 parts of the course were changed because of the weather. The map shows the 2026 course.

The Mittenwald Trail starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday at Mittenwald station and has 10 hours. The organizer calls it the ZUT's most popular race, and a good first ultra, but warns it's a tough one. The first half, past Schloss Elmau, is fast and easy to run. Then comes the long climb to the Osterfelder, and a descent that starts technical and turns runnable on the way into Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The map shows the 2026 course.

The Grainau Trail starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Zugspitzbad in Grainau, where the ZUT began in 2011, and has 4 hours. The organizer calls it an easy trail with no technical difficulties, for beginners and fast runners alike. It climbs about 750 m to the one aid station, Trögllift, at 8.4 km, then runs down to the finish. You can enter from 16. The map shows the 2026 course.

Registration

For 2027 the ZUT moved to a lottery. Entries ran through My UTMB from October 5 to 12, 2026, and the results come out there on October 14. Winners pay between October 15 and 19. A second draw from the waiting list follows on October 21, and from October 27 any places left go on general sale. If you lose the draw two years running, you get in on the third.

The ZUT100 needs a valid UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category. Fees run from €120 for the Grainau Trail to €386 for the ZUT100, and you have to be 18, or 16 for the Grainau Trail. Places can't be transferred or deferred to the next year. The four longest races refund 60% until February 17, 2027 and 30% until April 17. The three shorter ones refund nothing.

Getting to Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Munich Airport is 123 km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck 62 km, by the organizer's figures. Regional trains run hourly from Munich, and Flixbus line 040 connects the town with Munich and Innsbruck.

For the starts outside town, buses leave from the ice arena (Eisstadion), next to Parking A and 800 m south of the venue. The 2026 runner guide had them leaving at 9:30 p.m. on Friday for Ehrwald, and on Saturday at 5:30 a.m. for Mittenwald, 7:15 a.m. for Leutasch and 4:45 p.m. for Grainau. Parking A and Parking B (Hausberg, 1.5 km out) are public lots with posted time limits and fees. The remote starts have only a few spaces.

Crewing and spectating

One person per runner may help, and only at the aid stations that allow it, in the area set aside for crews. That zone runs from 500 m before the station to 500 m after. Crews can hand over a bag of up to 30 liters, and may treat blisters or give a massage while you sit. Nobody may run with you outside the marked spectator zones, so there are no pacers.

Crews are allowed at Eibsee, Gamsalm, Hämmermoosalm, Arzkasten, Biberwier, Hubertushof, Mittenwald, Schloss Elmau and Hochalm. Several are a walk from the nearest parking. Gamsalm is 20 minutes on foot from the Ponöfen lot, Hämmermoosalm half an hour from the Gaistal lot, and Schloss Elmau 20 minutes from its toll lot. For Hochalm, take the Kreuzeckbahn cable car and walk 20 minutes. The organizer runs no transport for supporters, so plan on your own car or public transport. To watch, head for the Garmisch Classic area, on the Kreuzeckbahn or Alpspitzbahn cable cars: runners pass there on Friday from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Saturday.

Weather and what to carry

June in Garmisch-Partenkirchen averages highs of 21.5°C and lows of 9.6°C, and about 180 mm of rain falls on some 20 days of the month (1991 to 2020 normals). The runner guide warns there can be snow and freezing temperatures higher up. Heat can be the problem too: in 2026 forecasts of over 30°C and lightning on the high ground made the organizer shorten the ZUT100, the Ultratrail and the Ehrwald Trail.

Every race requires a waterproof jacket with taped seams rated to at least 10,000 mm, an emergency kit with a rescue blanket, your own cup, and the course track on a watch or phone. The aid stations hand out no cups. The ZUT100 also needs two headlamps and a helmet. Poles are optional, but if you take them you carry them the whole way: they can't go in a drop bag.

Zugspitz Ultratrail FAQ

When is the Zugspitz Ultratrail 2027?

June 17 to 20, 2027. The ZUT100 starts on Thursday the 17th at 8 p.m. On Friday the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Trail starts at 10 a.m., the Ultratrail at 10 p.m. and the Ehrwald Trail at 11 p.m. On Saturday the Mittenwald Trail starts at 7 a.m., the Leutasch Trail at 9 a.m. and the Grainau Trail at 6 p.m.

How do you get a place at the Zugspitz Ultratrail?

Through the lottery, which for 2027 ran from October 5 to 12, 2026, with results on October 14 and a waiting-list draw on October 21. Places left after October 27 go on general sale. The ZUT100 also needs a UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category.

How long is the ZUT100?

The race page gives 167 km and 8,205 m of climbing, with a 42 hour 30 minute limit; its course data measures 163.4 km. The ZUT100 was first run in 2025. In 2026 the organizer cut it to 107 km because of heat and thunderstorms.

How many Running Stones do you get at the Zugspitz Ultratrail?

4 for the ZUT100, 3 for the Ultratrail and the Ehrwald Trail, 2 for the Leutasch Trail and the Mittenwald Trail, and 1 for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Trail and the Grainau Trail.

Can you have a pacer or crew at the Zugspitz Ultratrail?

No pacers: nobody may run with you outside the marked spectator zones by the aid stations. One crew member may help you at the aid stations that allow it, from Eibsee to Hochalm, in the crew area.

Do you need a helmet for the ZUT100?

Yes, for one section of about 2 km that starts about 6.5 km after the Biberwier aid station. You can send your helmet in your Biberwier drop bag and hand it back at Pestkapelle, about 2 km after the section. Any kind of helmet is allowed.
