Zion Ultras aid station map

Five races on the mesas near Zion National Park, from a trail half marathon around Wire Mesa to a 100 miler that drops to the Virgin River and climbs back out.

April 10 to 11, 2027 Apple Valley, Utah

The Zion Ultras start and finish at Ruby Rider Ranch in Apple Valley, Utah, near Smithsonian Butte. Matt Gunn started the race in 2012 as the Zion 100, the first event of his Ultra Adventures series, and Aravaipa Running now directs it. The 2027 edition is April 10 and 11, with all five distances starting on the Saturday morning.

Every course begins with Wire Mesa. The 60K, 100K and 100 mile go on to the slickrock of Gooseberry Mesa, and the two longest drop off it into the desert along the Virgin River. From the mesa rims you look across to Zion's sandstone walls, among them the West Temple and the Watchman.

An offline-accessible course map on a device is on the required gear list. The organizer draws its courses on CalTopo, and this map draws the same lines, with pins at the start, the crew points and the aid stations that have a known position. Download it in Goat Maps before you go and GPS shows where you are among them without a signal.

The organizer gives 96.9 miles and 10,481 feet of climbing. After Wire Mesa and Gooseberry Mesa you come off the mesa by the Mondo Z Cut, past the cliffs of Red Bull Rampage, and cross the Virgin Desert to Highway 9. Across the highway is Smith Mesa, the longest sustained climb on the course. The Flying Monkey Trail down from it is rocky and technical, harder still in the dark, with a big drop where a fixed rope helps you down. Then come Dalton Wash, where you may get your feet wet, and the slickrock around Guacamole, before you cross Highway 9 again and climb the Mondo Z Cut back to the ranch.

The map pins Wire Mesa, Virgin Desert, Virgin BMX and Guacamole. The organizer also lists Mondo Z (miles 23, 34.6 and 91.7), Gooseberry (30.8), Virgin Dam (51.5) and Smith Mesa (59.7), which aren't on this map yet. The longest gap is 9.4 miles, Smith Mesa to Virgin BMX.

The 100K follows the 100 mile to the Virgin Desert aid station at mile 42.9, with a short out-and-back to Crazy Jug Point on Gooseberry Mesa. There the courses split. You head for the Virgin River dam area and the Highway 9 corridor, then into the town of Virgin on paved roads and ATV tracks, before the climb back up the Mondo Z Cut. It's 60.3 miles with 5,646 feet of climbing.

Mondo Z (miles 23, 34.6 and 55), Gooseberry (30.8) and Virgin Dam (44.6) are on the organizer's table but not on the map. Virgin Dam to Mondo Z III is 10.4 miles, the longest stretch without aid.

Registration and fees

Entry is on UltraSignup and closes Monday, April 5, 2027. Until January 31 the 100 mile is $425, the 100K $330, the 60K $265, the 30K $200 and the half $180, plus taxes and fees. Prices rise after that.

Aravaipa doesn't refund or transfer entries. Withdraw in writing 30 days or more before the race and you get a 75% credit toward another of its events. Charity bibs through Wander Project waive the fee if you raise at least $2,000 for the 100 mile, down to $1,000 for the 30K and half.

Getting to Apple Valley

Ruby Rider Ranch is on Main Street in Apple Valley, a small town 12 miles east of Hurricane on SR-59. Bib pickup and the expo are at the ranch on Friday, April 9, from noon to 6 PM.

The organizer suggests staying in Apple Valley, Hurricane, Springdale or St. George, and booking early, since race weekend is busy around Zion.

Crewing and pacing

Only the 60K, 100K and 100 mile allow crews, and only the 100K and 100 mile allow pacers. Crews and pacers register at the Friday expo or on Saturday before the start, wear their bib where it shows, and go only to the crew access points: Virgin Desert, Virgin BMX and a point near the start and finish. Break the rules and your runner is disqualified.

In the 100 mile a pacer can join at Virgin Desert (mile 42.9) or either pass of Virgin BMX (69.1 and 87.5), one pacer at a time. In the 100K, pacers run from Virgin Desert to the finish.

Drop bag stations haven't been announced. Bags go to the drop-off near the start by 7 PM the night before, and the 30K and half shouldn't use them.

Weather and what to carry

At NOAA's La Verkin station, west of Virgin at about 3,200 feet, April averages a high of 73°F and a low of 44°F (1991 to 2020 normals). The courses run higher, from 3,442 to 5,442 feet. The packing list asks for warm clothes for the early start, layers and sun protection.

Required gear is a headlamp, a hydration system, a device with an offline course map, and your bib on the front. Gaiters are recommended. Trekking poles are allowed.

Zion FAQ

When is the Zion Ultras 2027?

April 10 and 11, 2027. All five races start on Saturday, April 10: the 100 mile at 6:00 AM, the 100K at 6:30, the 60K at 7:00, the 30K at 8:00 and the half marathon at 8:30.

Is the Zion 100 a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Western States lists the April 2027 Zion 100 mile (under 36 hours) and 100K (under 20 hours) as qualifiers for the 2028 run. The 100K has a 22 hour limit, so a finish between 20 and 22 hours doesn't qualify.

Does the Zion Ultras run in Zion National Park?

Not as far as the organizer's course descriptions go. The courses cross Wire Mesa, Gooseberry Mesa and Smith Mesa and run near Grafton and into Virgin, and from the rims you see Zion's West Temple and the Watchman. Gooseberry Mesa is Bureau of Land Management land, with the park rising to its north.

Can you have a pacer at the Zion Ultras?

In the 100 mile and 100K only. 100 mile pacers can join at Virgin Desert or at either pass of Virgin BMX, and 100K pacers at Virgin Desert. One pacer at a time, with a signed waiver and a visible bib.

What are the cutoff times at the Zion Ultras?

They weren't published when this page was checked. The overall limits are 36 hours for the 100 mile, 22 for the 100K, 14 for the 60K, 7 for the 30K and 6 for the half.

How hard is the Flying Monkey descent?

The Flying Monkey Trail takes the 100 mile off Smith Mesa on narrow, rocky singletrack, with a large drop where you go down a fixed rope, and it's harder in the dark. The organizer's advice is to take your time if you're not at ease on technical descents.
