Zegama-Aizkorri course map and checkpoints

A 42 km mountain marathon over the Aizkorri ridge, from a village at 296 m to the top of Aketegi at about 1,550 m and back, with a Vertical Kilometer two days before.

June 4 to 6, 2027 Zegama, Gipuzkoa (Basque Country)

Zegama-Aizkorri is a mountain marathon in the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, run from the village of Zegama in Gipuzkoa since 2002. It counts for the Golden Trail World Series, and in 2026 it opened the season. The 2027 marathon is on Sunday 6 June, with the Vertical Kilometer on Friday 4 June.

The marathon is one loop: up to Aratz, down to the hermitage at Sancti Spiritu, along the Aizkorri ridge to Aketegi, across the Urbia pastures, and a long descent back to the square. The Vertical Kilometer climbs from Arriaundi, just outside the village, to the summit of Iraule. A Junior Trail of about 10 km for 16 to 18 year olds runs on the Sunday too, partly on the marathon's last descent.

The map draws the organizer's own GPX files, which date from 2020. The 2026 cutoff checkpoints fall on that line in order, and the Golden Trail World Series says the course has barely changed in years, so we've mapped it as the current course. Download it before you go, whether you're racing or walking up to watch.

You leave Zegama at 296 m and climb to the Otzaurte pass at 652 m, and the first 16 km are mostly uphill, to Aratz. From there you drop to Sancti Spiritu and climb the steep wall that spectators line. Then you're on the Aizkorri ridge: a flying sprint on Aizkorri at km 22.58, then Aketegi, the high point at about 1,550 m. Past Oltze and Urbia comes a shorter climb over Andraitz, and the last 12 km are downhill to the square. The organizer reckons about half the course is technical ground, with beech forest, bare rock and high pasture.

There are 13 aid stations plus the finish. The map pins the cutoff checkpoints from the 2026 regulation, timed from the start; the one at Moano (km 34.2, 7 hours) has no pin because we couldn't place it. The line is the organizer's 2020 GPX. In 2026 the race started at 9:00; the 2027 start time isn't out yet.

In 2026 the KV started at 16:00 in Zegama. The first 2.2 km, from the square to Arriaundi (505 m), are neutral, a warm-up you have 25 minutes for. The clock starts at Arriaundi, and the timed 3 km gain 1,015 m on the way to Iraule at 1,520 m. You have 40 minutes from Arriaundi to Itzubiaga. There are two aid stations, one partway up and one at the finish. The field is capped at 250, all 18 or over, and entry cost 30 euros in 2026.

In 2026 bad weather cut it short: the safety committee moved the finish down to the hut at Itzubiaga, for about 760 m of climbing. The line is the organizer's 2020 KV file.

Getting a bib

For 2027, pre-registration for the marathon runs from 11 January at 12:00 to 22 January on Kronoak.com; in 2026 it cost 1 euro. The draw for all three races is on 12 February 2027. Of the 500 marathon places in 2026, 225 went to the lottery, 150 were kept by the organizer, and 125 went to runners with fast times from the last two editions or who had run every edition. The 2027 announcement also mentions direct places for people from the village. If you're drawn, you pay the full fee (75 euros in 2026) by the date in your email.

The KV and Junior Trail have their own pre-registration, from 25 January to 5 February 2027, and the same draw.

Getting there and watching

The nearest train stations are Beasain and Altsasu, and Lurraldebus runs buses to the village. On race weekend the organizer runs free shuttles from car parks outside the village to the center and to the course: in 2026 they made 444 trips and carried about 25,000 people. The roads into the natural park close to cars in the days before, so plan to walk, ride or take the bus. Don't park anywhere the park doesn't allow.

More than 10,000 people come for the race weekend, and the best-known place to watch is the climb to Sancti Spiritu around km 20.

Kit and weather

Every runner carries a windproof jacket, a cup for drinks and a thermal blanket, plus a GPS tracker if the organizer hands you one. The ridge is high and open, and the organizer can switch the marathon to its alternative course or change it if the weather turns. In 2026 it cut the KV short.

In 2026 the briefing was in the school yard at 18:00 the evening before, and bibs were handed out on Saturday from 17:00 to 19:00 in the school gym and on Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 under the church porch. Look for the 2027 times nearer the day.

The organizer's files are from 2020. The 2026 checkpoints sit on the 2020 line in the right order, and the Golden Trail World Series says the course has barely changed in years, so you can use it. On the day, follow the markers: the organizer can move the race onto its alternative course in bad weather.
