Wasatch Front 100 course map and aid stations

A hundred miles along the crest of the central Wasatch Mountains, from Kaysville to Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah.

September 10 to 11, 2027 Kaysville to Midway, Utah

First run in 1980, the Wasatch Front 100 starts on the first Friday after Labor Day. It's point to point: from East Mountain Wilderness Park in Kaysville, north of Salt Lake City, south along the crest of the central Wasatch to the pavilion at Soldier Hollow, in Wasatch Mountain State Park, Midway. The organizer puts the climbing at about 24,000 feet, and the high point is Point Supreme, 10,462 feet, at mile 72.3.

The line on the map is the 2022 course, from the organizer's GPX file, with the 2026 aid stations and cutoffs on it. The 2027 course documents aren't out yet.

The course is marked with pink and yellow ribbons, with reflectors on the night sections, but the course directions flag junctions where "if you are looking at your feet at this point, you will get lost for a long time." Amateur radio volunteers handle runner tracking. Load the course in Goat Maps before you go, and your phone's GPS will put you on the line with or without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run. Check the official site before you enter or race.

The line is the 2022 course, from the race's GPX file. The stops are the 2026 ones, as the 2027 chart isn't out yet. Cutoffs are arrival times: get to a station at or after its cutoff and your race is over.

The first climb is the big one, up Bair Canyon to the ridge near the Francis Peak radar domes, nearly 4,200 feet in 4.4 miles by the organizer's count. Sessions Lift Off to Big Mountain is 11 miles with no aid in between. A few miles past Big Mountain the trail turns to loose rock the size of ball bearings, exposed to the sun, and the directions warn it can top 100°F on the way down to Lambs. Carry more water than you think you need.

After Brighton you climb past Lake Mary and Lake Martha to Catherine Pass and Point Supreme, then drop down a steep, rocky jeep road to Ant Knolls. Desolation Lake has no road in, so its volunteers carry everything and food is limited; Rock Springs is mostly a water stop. Near the end you follow the Parkway Trail around Deer Creek Reservoir for 5 miles.

Getting in

Entry is by lottery. For 2027, apply on UltraSignup from December 1, 2026 to January 4, 2027; the fee is $325, and the lottery is January 30, 2027. If you aren't drawn, you get an extra ticket the next year, as long as you apply in successive years. Volunteers earn extra tickets too, and past winners and six-time finishers get in automatically.

Every entrant does 8 hours of supervised trail work, after the previous year's race, and emails the form by August 15. Volunteering at another race doesn't count. Once you're drawn there are no refunds, transfers or deferrals.

If you're going for the Grand Slam and aren't drawn, the committee holds your application: enter the Grand Slam too, finish three of Western States, Vermont, Old Dominion and Leadville that summer, and you're in.

Getting to the start and home from the finish

The start is just past the entrance to East Mountain Wilderness Park, 650 North 1600 East in Kaysville, about 17 miles north of Salt Lake City. You can't leave a car there once the race starts. Buses leave for the start from about 50 West 500 South in downtown Salt Lake at 4:00 AM sharp, at no extra charge, and you can park in the City Creek lot next door for $15 a day.

The day before, check-in at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City is mandatory, from noon to 4:00 PM, and that's where you leave your drop bags. There's no bus back from Midway. Two minivans take a few runners back to Salt Lake as space allows, so line up a ride. The closest lodging and food are in Midway, then Heber.

Crewing and pacing

Crews can meet you at Big Mountain, Lambs Canyon, Brighton and the finish. Being met anywhere else gets you disqualified and barred from future races. For Big Mountain and Lambs, crews wait at Washington Park, off I-80 exit 134, for a parking pass, one vehicle per runner. The Big Mountain pass comes an hour before you're predicted to arrive, and the Lambs pass when you leave Alexander. Brighton, up Big Cottonwood Canyon, has plenty of parking.

Pacers can join at Big Mountain, mile 31.9, or from the start if you're 60 or older. You get one at a time, 18 or older, swapped at Big Mountain, Lambs, Brighton or Top of the Wall. From Top of the Wall to the finish anyone can run with you, your kids included. Pets aren't allowed at any race venue. Washington Park, Big Mountain, Alexander and Lambs are in Salt Lake City's watershed, and the city writes citations for pets there.

Weather and drop bags

The organizer says race temperatures have ranged from 25 to 90°F. One year fresh snow fell on Catherine Pass with a wind chill below zero; another saw trail temperatures over 100°F. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 September normals at Silver Lake Brighton, near the mile 69 station, are a high of 62°F and a low of 38°F. In Heber, near the finish, they're 79°F and 40°F. Utah's low humidity makes it easy to get dehydrated.

Drop bags go to seven aid stations and the finish. Use soft bags that fit a 10 by 10 by 20 inch box. Daytime stations have water, electrolyte drink, fruit and something salty, and any gels there are samples, so carry your own and restock from your bags.

Wasatch 100 FAQ

When is the Wasatch 100 in 2027?

It starts at 5:00 AM on Friday, September 10, 2027, and ends at 5:00 PM on Saturday, September 11. Check-in is Thursday, September 9, at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.

Is the Wasatch 100 a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finishing in under 36 hours qualifies you for the Western States lottery: a 2026 finish for 2027's, a 2027 finish for 2028's. A 2026 or 2027 finish also qualifies you for the Hardrock 2028 lottery.

What do you get for finishing under 24, 30 or 36 hours?

Every finisher gets a plaque of the course. The belt buckle depends on your time: the Crimson Cheetah under 24 hours, the Spirit of the Wind under 30, and the Badger Heart under 36.

Can you have a pacer at the Wasatch 100?

Yes, from Big Mountain at mile 31.9, or from the start if you are 60 or older. Pacers must be 18 or older and you can have one at a time, changed at Big Mountain, Lambs Canyon, Brighton or Top of the Wall.

Is there a GPX of the Wasatch 100 course?

Yes. The race's Trail Maps page has GPX, KML and KMZ files of the course with its waypoints, made by John Moellmer, and PDF maps of each section. The GPS files are from the 2022 course; the 2026 course directions and mileage table are on the Course Info page.

How many runners finish the Wasatch 100?

In 2026, 236 of 396 starters finished inside the 36 hour limit.
