Vermont 100 crew stations and cutoffs

A 100 miler and a 100K on the dirt roads and horse trails of southern Vermont, run the same weekend as a horse race on mostly the same trails.

July 16 to 18, 2027 West Windsor, Vermont

Runners have raced the Vermont 100 since 1989, starting and finishing in Silver Hill Meadow in West Windsor. The organizer says it's the only 100 miler left that's held together with a horse race, and it's part of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning. All the proceeds go to Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports.

Most of the course is on private land, and the organizer doesn't publish a course map, out of respect for the landowners, who let the race through for race weekend only. You can't pre-run it either. So the map here shows only Silver Hill Meadow and the crew stations the 2026 Runner Handbook gives driving directions to. The miles and cutoffs come from the 2026 aid station chart; the 2027 chart is due in summer 2027.

Crews get written directions because, the organizer warns, GPS often sends cars down Class IV roads that can't be driven. Cell signal is hard to come by out there, so download the map before you go: your phone's GPS shows where you are on those back roads without one.

By the organizer's count it's about 68 miles of rolling dirt road, 30 of horse trail and 2 of pavement. There's no major climb. The 17,000 feet come from one short hill after another. The handbook names the parts runners remember: Bill's Barn, the view from Sound of Music Hill, the wildflowers after Birminghams and the climb up Heartbreak Hill.

There are 25 aid stations, and the unmanned ones have only water and electrolyte drink. The stops here are the eight times your crew can meet you before the finish, from the 2026 chart; the other stations are on private land and aren't mapped. Camp 10 Bear comes up twice, at miles 47.1 and 69.2, and pacers can join from the second visit. The finish closes at 10 AM Sunday, 30 hours after the start. Finish in under 24 hours and you get the large buckle.

The 100K starts at 9 AM, five hours after the 100 mile, and follows lavender plates for about 6 miles to Lillian's aid station, where it joins the 100 mile course near that race's mile 44. From there the two courses are the same to the finish. The organizer gives 9,000 feet of climbing over about 41 miles of dirt road, 20 of horse trail and 1 of pavement, and the 2026 chart puts the finish at mile 62.7.

There are 16 aid stations. On the 2026 chart your crew can meet you six times before the finish, twice at Camp 10 Bear, at miles 9.8 and 31.9. You have 25 hours, to the same 10 AM Sunday close as the 100 mile. There's no qualifier for this distance.

Getting in

In 2026 entry was by lottery in January: one lottery and one waitlist for both races, capped at 450 runners. The lottery was open January 1 to 9 and drawn live on January 11. You could enter alone or with a buddy, in which case you both got in or neither did. Some runners skipped the lottery and entered in December, among them anyone with four or more finishes of their distance in the last eight editions, recent podium finishers, athletes with disabilities and course landowners. Runners who commit to raising $2,000 for Vermont Adaptive with Team Run 2 Empower get priority entries.

The 100 mile needed a qualifier: a 50 miler under 12 hours, a 100K under 16 hours or a 100 miler under 30 hours. Both races asked for 8 hours of volunteer service, like trail work or helping at a race, though you could buy out of it if volunteering was a hardship. Crewing and pacing didn't count. Entry was $425 for the 100 mile and $375 for the 100K, and entries can't be deferred or transferred except under the organizer's pregnancy and military policies. The organizer said the 2027 details would be posted in fall 2026.

Getting to Silver Hill Meadow

Silver Hill Meadow is in West Windsor, off Interstate 91. From the north, leave at Exit 9 (Hartland-Windsor) and take Route 5, Route 12 and the Brownsville-Hartland Road to Silver Hill Road. From the south, leave at Exit 8. Follow the organizer's written directions rather than your GPS, since some local roads are closed to race traffic for the weekend. The airports the organizer suggests are Hartford, about 2 hours away, and Albany and Boston, about 3.

Camping in the meadow is free for runners, crews and pacers on Friday and Saturday nights. It's a spot for your tent in a field with portable toilets at the edge, and there's no room for RVs or camper vans. Otherwise look for a room in West Windsor, Ascutney, Woodstock, White River Junction or Lebanon, New Hampshire. In 2026 Friday was check-in and a mandatory pre-race meeting at 4:15 PM, and drop bags were due by 5:30 PM.

Crewing and pacing

Each runner gets one crew vehicle, and it needs the crew pass to get into the crew stations. Crews can help only at those stations, and the Runner Handbook has driving directions to each one, written in order. Use them: GPS sends cars down roads that can't be driven, and some roads are off-limits to race traffic. Unmarked dirt roads are 30 mph. Crewing the 100 mile means more than 125 miles of driving, and the 100K about 85.

Parking at the stations is tight. Don't get to Pretty House or Lincoln Covered Bridge more than 30 minutes ahead of your runner. At Spirit of '76 you park and walk about five minutes down, and at Bill's the station is in a barn below the parking field.

Pacers can start after the second pass through Camp 10 Bear, for about the last 30 miles, and runners over 60 can have one the whole way. You get one pacer at a time, swapped at crew stations, and they can't carry your gear. Pacers can't park at the stations: a free shuttle runs from Silver Hill Meadow to Camp 10 Bear, Spirit of '76 and Bill's. Solo runners go without crew or pacers and send drop bags instead.

Weather and what to bring

The race is on the third weekend of July, and the organizer warns of heat and high humidity. Race morning is usually 65 to 70°F and foggy, though it can be as cool as 50°F. By day it's usually 75 to 85°F, and hotter in some years. Rain on race day is unusual but possible, and the trails can be muddy if it's been wet. The organizer thinks road shoes would probably do.

The race is cupless, so carry a cup or bottle for the aid stations and for Friday's dinner. Headphones and speakers are banned, and poles need the race director's approval. Leave dogs at home: they aren't allowed at Silver Hill Meadow, at the aid stations or on the course. At night, talk to riders as you come up behind their horses, and don't shine your headlamp at them.

Vermont 100 FAQ

When is the Vermont 100 in 2027?

July 16 to 18, 2027. Friday is check-in, the 100 mile starts at 4 AM on Saturday, July 17, the 100K at 9 AM, and the finish closes at 10 AM on Sunday.

Is there a Vermont 100 course map?

No. Most of the course is on private land, and the organizer doesn't publish maps out of respect for the landowners, who allow the race only on race weekend. You aren't allowed to pre-run it. The course is marked with yellow plates by day and green glow sticks at night, and the map on this page shows only the start, the finish and the crew stations.

Is the Vermont 100 a Western States qualifier?

Yes. The organizer says the 2027 race qualifies for the 2028 Western States lottery if you finish the 100 mile inside its 30 hours, or the 100K within 17 hours.

Can you have a pacer at the Vermont 100?

Yes, from your second time through Camp 10 Bear, at about mile 70 of the 100 mile and mile 32 of the 100K. Runners over 60 can have a pacer from the start.

Do you run with horses at the Vermont 100?

Yes. The Vermont 100 Endurance Ride runs at the same time, and riders share the trails with runners. The organizer says the horses won't run you over and would rather slow to your pace. If a rider wants to pass, they'll ask you to step aside, and if you want to pass, ask the rider and wait for the okay.

Is there cell service on the Vermont 100 course?

Don't count on it. The organizer calls Vermont remote, tells you to just try getting a cell signal out there, and says very few aid stations manage to upload live timing. Download the map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS shows where you are without a signal.
