Trail Verbier St-Bernard 2027 course maps

Five races between Verbier, Champex, the Great St Bernard and the Grand Combin, July 9 to 11, 2027.

July 9 to 11, 2027 Verbier, Valais, Switzerland

Trail Verbier St-Bernard is a UTMB World Series event in the Valais Alps, run since 2009, and its organizer bills it as the first ultra trail in Switzerland. Every race finishes in Verbier. The X-Alpine is the 140 km loop from Verbier over to Champex, La Fouly and the Great St Bernard pass, with a short stretch in Italy. The X-Traversée runs the X-Alpine's second half, from La Fouly. Two marathons start above Bruson on Friday, and the X-Plore stays on the slopes above Verbier.

You need a phone with roaming that works in Switzerland, kept on the whole race. The rules also mention areas where only emergency calls go through. Download the course map before you leave, so your phone's GPS can still put you on the line.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Trail Verbier St-Bernard by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

You start at 10 PM on Friday and climb onto the ridge above Verbier in the dark, then drop to Sembrancher and Champex and its lake. The long climb to Orny takes you next to the first glacier, at 2,818 m. After La Fouly you go up past the Fenêtre lakes, cross briefly into Italy and reach the Great St Bernard hospice.

The way back to Verbier crosses several passes and the suspension bridge at Panossière, right under the Grand Combin. Before the last descent you still have to climb what the organizer calls "the famous 1200m wall". Plan your water for La Fouly to the Great St Bernard: 14 km and a pass with no aid between them, and a 3:45 PM Saturday cutoff at Plan la Chaux on the way. Your drop bag waits at Bourg St Pierre.

The organizer's oldest race starts at La Fouly on Saturday morning. You go straight into the alpine terrain past the Fenêtre lakes, with a short stretch in Italy before the Great St Bernard. From there it's pass after pass, then Panossière, its glacier and suspension bridge, and the 1,200 m climb before Verbier.

For 2027 the route near the Great St Bernard changes, after runners were held up on a technical section there in 2026. Starts go in three waves by UTMB Index, 9:00, 9:20 and 9:40, and leaving in an earlier wave than yours costs a 2 hour penalty.

This route is new for 2027. It starts with the X-Treme at Moay, above Bruson, and splits from it at Cabane de Mille, going round Mont Rogneux by Cabane Brunet instead of over the top. It's longer than the X-Treme and less technical, though it still goes over the Panossière suspension bridge before the descent to Lourtier and the climb to Verbier.

The field is capped at 1,100 runners, in six waves from 7:45 to 9:00 AM.

This was the Verbier Marathon until 2026. From Moay a ridge singletrack faces the Grand Combin and Mont Blanc, and a narrow technical trail takes you to the top of Mont Rogneux at 3,084 m. The organizer warns that it's for runners already at ease on technical alpine trails. Below Rogneux you reach Panossière, its glacier and bridge, then Lourtier, and finish in Verbier.

It's limited to 800 runners and starts with the Verbier Marathon, in waves from 7:45 AM.

The organizer built this one as an introduction to trail running, and it isn't very technical. From the middle of Verbier you climb toward Pierre Avoi, then follow a balcony path looking at the Combin and the Mont Blanc massif, out to Cabane Mont-Fort and along the Bisse du Levron irrigation channel before running back through town.

The map shows the 2026 course: the organizer says the X-Plore is unchanged for 2027.

Registration and fees

There's no lottery and no waitlist. UTMB Index holders could sign up from October 6, 2026 and everyone else from October 8, and entries stay open until July 4, 2027 unless a race sells out first.

Entry is CHF 275 to 309 for the X-Alpine, 172 to 208 for the X-Traversée, 124 to 144 for the X-Treme, 122 to 142 for the Verbier Marathon and 82 to 97 for the X-Plore, plus an 8% admin fee. Bibs aren't refunded unless you buy the cancellation insurance at sign-up, but you can hand yours to another runner until May 31, 2027 for CHF 20. You also need accident insurance that covers rescue costs in Switzerland and Italy.

Getting to Verbier

Geneva is the nearest airport, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Verbier. Take the train from the airport to Martigny, change for Le Châble, and ride the cable car up to Verbier; it runs from 5:15 AM to 11:50 PM. Zurich is about 4 hours away and Milan Malpensa about 3.

If you drive, parking in Le Châble is free. You can't drive to the marathon start: take the gondola from Le Châble to Bruson, free for runners. X-Traversée runners ride a bus to La Fouly from Le Châble or Orsières, because the road is closed that morning, and book it on the MyUTMB dashboard in May.

Crewing

One person may help you, and only inside the assistance zone, which runs 500 m either side of each station that allows it. There are no pacers: running with someone outside the spectator zones near the aid stations costs a penalty.

Crews take the bus to La Fouly on Saturday morning, and to Brunet and Lourtier in the daytime, or drive there at night. La Chaux is a cable car ride from Verbier. For the marathons, Pindin is a bus ride and a 45 minute walk, its road is closed on Friday, and parking is banned at Lourtier and above. Supporters' bus tickets go on sale in May.

Weather and kit

The weather station at the Great St Bernard pass, at 2,472 m, averages a July high of 11.8°C and a low of 5.1°C, with 140 mm of precipitation over about 13 wet days (MeteoSwiss normals, 1991 to 2020), so nights on the high passes are cold even in July.

The long races' mandatory kit includes two headlamps, 1.5 liters of water, a hooded waterproof jacket, waterproof overpants, a warm layer and warm gloves; the marathons need one headlamp. The organizer may drop items if the forecast is good. There are no disposable cups or cutlery at the aid stations, so bring your own. If you start with poles, you carry them to the finish.

Trail Verbier St-Bernard FAQ

When is Trail Verbier St-Bernard 2027?

July 9 to 11, 2027. Both marathons start on Friday morning and the X-Alpine at 10 PM that night. The X-Traversée starts on Saturday at 9 AM and the X-Plore on Sunday at 7:30 AM.

Is the X-Alpine a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finishing the X-Alpine in under 40 hours gets you into the Western States draw. It also gives 4 Running Stones toward the UTMB Mont-Blanc ballot.

What's the difference between the Verbier Marathon and the X-Treme?

The X-Treme (43 km, 3,000 m of climbing) goes over the summit of Mont Rogneux on technical alpine trail. The Verbier Marathon (47 km, 2,900 m) splits off at Cabane de Mille and goes round Rogneux by Cabane Brunet, which makes it longer but more runnable. Both start at Moay on Friday and finish in Verbier.

Can you have a pacer at Trail Verbier St-Bernard?

No. Nobody may run with you outside the spectator zones near the aid stations. You can have one helper at the stations where assistance is allowed.

How do you get to the X-Traversée start at La Fouly?

By the race's bus from Le Châble or Orsières, unless you're staying in a village above Orsières on the way to La Fouly. The road is closed on Saturday morning. The bus is free for runners but you book it on your MyUTMB dashboard, and supporters who want to see the start ride it too.

Is there cell service on the Trail Verbier St-Bernard courses?

You must carry a phone with roaming that works in Switzerland and keep it on, with the LiveTrail app running. The rules say some areas only allow emergency calls, so download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.
