Val d'Aran by UTMB course maps and aid stations

Seven races over five days in the Catalan Pyrenees, from an evening 10K in Vielha to a 163 km lap of the whole valley.

July 7 to 11, 2027 Vielha, Val d'Aran, Catalonia

Val d'Aran by UTMB is the European Major of the UTMB World Series, held in July in the Val d'Aran, in the Catalan Pyrenees. The 2027 edition runs July 7 to 11. Vielha is the base, and every race but the SKY finishes there.

The VDA starts and finishes in Vielha and goes around the valley. The CDH starts in Les, the TDL in Bossòst, the PDA in Salardú and the SKY at Pla de Beret. The CDH passes the valley's old mines, the TDL follows border escape routes, and the VDA, CDH and PDA all go through the lake cirque of Colomèrs.

The maps, aid stations and cutoffs here come from the 2026 courses, which the race pages still carry. The organizer's 2027 files for the VDA, TDL and PDA follow the same lines. The regulations warn of areas where only emergency calls go through, and the VDA, CDH and TDL require the course track on your watch or phone. Download the map before you go: GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The VDA, Torn dera Val d'Aran, starts on Friday afternoon and climbs straight out of Vielha over Tuc Montcorbison, then heads west over Tuc dera Escaleta (about 2,450 m) and down to Bossòst at km 49. From there it turns north and east past Canejan and the Honeria refuge, up through the old mines of Liat, over Pòrt d'Urets (about 2,520 m) to Montgarri and Beret, and down to Salardú at km 114. The last third crosses the Colomèrs lakes and comes back over Tuc de Meddia to Vielha.

The gaps to plan for are Honeria to Còth de Varradòs (16 km) and Varradòs to Montgarri (about 18 km), both over the high ground. The TDL, Termières dera Libertat ("borders of freedom"), was new in 2026. It follows paths once used by people escaping war and persecution over these mountains. It starts in Bossòst on Wednesday morning and runs the VDA backwards as far as Bassa d'Oles, over Portilhon and Poilanèr to Artiga de Lin at km 30.

From Bassa d'Oles it turns south through Val de Horno to Santet Escunhau and down to Vielha. Artiga de Lin is the one place you'll see your crew and your drop bag. The map shows the 2026 course.

Registration and the UTMB Index

The VDA, CDH, TDL, PDA and EXP need a valid UTMB Index. For the VDA it must be in the 100K or 100M category, and for the CDH and TDL in the 50K, 100K or 100M category. The organizer advises against entering the VDA, CDH or TDL with an Index under 400, because that's the level the cutoffs are set for. You must be 20 by the end of 2027 (16 for the 10K).

For 2027 the TDL, PDA and EXP went to a lottery, whose sign-up closed in September 2026, and all three are full. The VDA, CDH, SKY and 10K are sold first come, first served, and opened on October 7, 2026 for runners with an Index and two days later for everyone. When this page was checked the SKY was full and the others were open. Sales run until June 23, 2027 or until they sell out, with no waitlist.

Prices rise in tiers as places sell: €246 to €319 for the VDA and €199 to €256 for the CDH. The lottery races cost €194 (TDL), €138 (PDA) and €85 (EXP). There are no refunds unless you buy the cancellation insurance when you register (13% of the fee), and bibs can't be transferred. You can switch between the VDA and CDH until May 30, 2027 if places allow. You also need accident insurance that covers mountain rescue in Spain and France.

Getting to Vielha

The nearest airport with international flights is Toulouse, 166 km away. From there it's about two hours by car, or 3 hours 40 by the twice daily bus through Saint-Gaudens. Barcelona is 350 km, about 3 hours 30 by car or 5 hours 30 on the ALSA bus. By road from Spain you come in through the Vielha tunnel on the N-230 or over the Port de la Bonaigua on the C-28. From France it's the N-125, which becomes the N-230 at the border at Pont de Rei.

The race runs free buses to the CDH, TDL and PDA starts from towns around the valley. In the last days before the event, companions can buy tickets on the race transport to follow their runner.

Crew, drop bags and pacers

Crews are allowed only in the three longest races, and only at a few aid stations: Bossòst, Salardú and Arties on the VDA, Salardú and Arties on the CDH, and Artiga de Lin on the TDL. Only one person may help you, in the marked area, with a bag of up to 30 liters. The PDA, EXP, SKY and 10K allow no help anywhere on course.

Drop bags go to the same stations: three for the VDA, two for the CDH, one for the TDL. You get the 30 liter bags at bib pickup and hand them back as you leave each station. Poles can't go in them. The VDA has rest areas at Bossòst, Salardú and Arties, and the CDH at Arties.

There are no pacers. Nobody who isn't registered may run with you, except in the marked zones near aid stations.

Weather and what to carry

July in Vielha averages highs of about 25°C and lows of about 11°C, with around 65 mm of rain over eight rainy days, according to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia. The organizer warns that weather in the valley changes within minutes, from extreme heat to sudden storms, and the courses go well above 2,000 m.

For the VDA, CDH and TDL the kit list includes two headlamps, a steady red rear light, an emergency bivvy bag (a foil blanket doesn't count), a hooded waterproof jacket rated to 10,000 mm, waterproof overtrousers, a 180 g thermal layer and warm waterproof gloves. Bring your own cup: the aid stations hand out no disposable cups or cutlery. If you start with poles, you carry them to the finish.

Val d'Aran FAQ

When is Val d'Aran by UTMB 2027?

July 7 to 11, 2027. The TDL and Vielha 10K are on Wednesday the 7th, the PDA on Thursday, the VDA and CDH on Friday the 9th, the SKY on Saturday and the EXP on Sunday the 11th.

Does Val d'Aran give you a place at UTMB?

Only if you're in the top 10 men or women of the VDA, CDH or PDA, which earns direct entry to the 2028 UTMB, CCC or OCC in the matching category. As a Major, every race that gives Running Stones gives double, which raise your odds in the UTMB Mont-Blanc lottery.

What UTMB Index do you need for Val d'Aran?

A valid Index in the 100K or 100M category for the VDA, and in the 50K, 100K or 100M category for the CDH and TDL. The PDA and EXP take an Index in any category, and the SKY and 10K need none. The organizer recommends at least 400 for the three longest races.

Can you have a crew or a pacer at Val d'Aran?

Crew yes, at a few stations: Bossòst, Salardú and Arties on the VDA, Salardú and Arties on the CDH, and Artiga de Lin on the TDL. Pacers no: nobody unregistered may run with you outside the marked zones near aid stations.

Is there cell service on the Val d'Aran courses?

Not everywhere. The regulations mention areas where only emergency calls work, and you must carry a phone with roaming for Spain and France and keep it out of airplane mode. Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.

How hard is the VDA?

It is 163 km with 10,000 m of climbing and a 48 hour limit, and it tops out around 2,550 m. In 2026, 361 runners finished it.
