Ultravasan course maps and checkpoints

The Vasaloppet ski trail, run in August: 92 km from Sälen to Mora, or a shorter start at Oxberg.

August 20 to 21, 2027 Sälen to Mora, Dalarna, Sweden

Ultravasan is Vasaloppet's summer running race on the same line as its ski race, from Berga by in Sälen east through the forests of Dalarna to the finish portal in Mora. It was first run in 2014. The Ultravasan 90 covers the whole 92 km. The Ultravasan 45 and Trailvasan 30 start at Oxberg and share its last stretch, and the Trailvasan 10 is an evening loop in Mora the day before. The Vasastafetten relay runs the full course on the same Saturday.

Most of it is forest road, so it's fast for an ultra: 867 m of climbing over 92 km. The organizer calls the first half moderately hilly and the last 19 km flatter. The map shows the 2026 courses from the organizer's own files, since the 2027 ones aren't out yet.

Vasaloppet only marks and maintains the trail during its own events. If you want to run a section before race week, download the map first. Your phone's GPS shows where you are on it without a signal.

You start at 05:00 in Berga by and run along the Västerdalälven river, then climb about 3 km to the highest point of the Vasaloppet trail. A few kilometers of sometimes rocky trail follow, and 10 of the 14.3 km from Smågan to Mångsbodarna are twisting singletrack with boardwalk over the bogs. After Risberg and the lakes at Evertsberg the course drops to Vasslan and climbs again, Lundbäcksbacken included, up to Oxberg. The last 19 km are flatter, on forest road past Hökberg, Läde and Eldris into Mora.

Evertsberg, at 48.7 km, is about halfway and the only checkpoint you can send a bag to. There are cutoffs at the last three checkpoints, Oxberg, Hökberg and Eldris, and you have to leave each within ten minutes of its time. Between the seven checkpoints there are fluid stations about every 5 km. In 2026 the course went back to its usual line through Axikvarn and Björnarvet, between Evertsberg and Oxberg, after several years of a detour for roadworks.

The 45 starts at Oxberg at 10:00 and loops around the Oxbergssjön lake to Vasslan before it joins the 90 course, so you get Lundbäcksbacken and the climb up to the Oxberg checkpoint too. The organizer says the technical bits are mostly early. In all it's about 40 km of forest road, 3 km of gravel and 2 km of asphalt.

The checkpoints are Oxberg, Hökberg and Eldris, with cutoffs at the last two. The organizer's course notes add up to 43.3 km, not the 45 on its race page. The checkpoint distances here come from the 2026 notes, and the finish is shown at 45.

The 30 starts at Oxberg at 11:30, climbs to the Oxberg checkpoint 1.7 km in, and from there follows the last 28 km of the Vasaloppet trail to Mora. All but about a kilometer is forest road. There are two grassy stretches across fields before Gopshus, then smooth road with some gravel through Hökberg, Krångåsen's summer farm and Eldris.

Food and drink are at Hökberg and Eldris, both with cutoffs, and fluids about every 5 km between them. The map shows the 2026 course.

The 10 starts at the Vasaloppet finish at 18:00 on the Friday and follows paths beside the Vasaloppet trail toward Mora's ski stadium, then trail and forest road through the woods along the Österdalälven river, and back through Mora Camping and the town center. About 8 km is forest road and trail, and 2 km is asphalt.

There are drinks at 5.5 km and 8.3 km, no cutoffs and a three hour limit. It's open from the year you turn 11. The organizer publishes no file for this course, so the map shows only its start and finish.

Entering

You enter on the race page at vasaloppet.se, and the fee goes up the closer it gets. The Ultravasan 90 is 2,025 SEK until 30 April 2027, then 2,125 SEK until 19 August and 2,375 SEK for the last two days. Until the same date the 45 is 1,015 SEK and the 30 is 820 SEK, and a relay team of ten is 3,340 SEK. You can run the 90, 45 and 30 from the year you turn 17.

The 90 takes up to 2,500 runners. In 2026 more than 2,300 entered, a record, and registration stayed open until the start. Start numbers are assigned in August. At the start you pick one of three pens by your expected time (under 10 hours, 10 to 12, or over 12), and two more at the front are for seeded elites and, in 2026, the Swedish championship class.

Getting to Sälen and back from Mora

The start in Sälen and the finish in Mora are 92 km of trail apart, and Vasaloppet asks every runner to take its buses. They run from set places in Mora, Sälen and Oxberg to the starts and back from the finish, for runners only, not spectators. Booking opens in May 2027. You pick up your number at the race office in Mora or Sälen the day before, or at the start.

Mora is the end of the Dala Line railway from Uppsala. Vasaloppet doesn't book rooms: it points you to Visit Dalarna for Mora and the rest of the county, and to Skistar for Sälen. After the finish you collect your bag behind Vasaloppets Hus and take a free bus to the showers at Prästholmens IP.

Food, drop bags and following a runner

Each checkpoint has toilets, medical staff and food. The organizer's guide lists blueberry soup, sports drink, water, bananas, gherkins, buns and coffee. Evertsberg and Hökberg also offer a short massage. The one drop bag is the plastic bag you get with your number: pack a change of clothes in it, put it on the truck marked Evertsberg, and it's carried on to Mora after you've been through.

The race pages don't cover crews, but the page for the 2026 Swedish championship, held within the 90, let supporters hand you food and drink anywhere on the course except inside the official checkpoints and on the last 1,000 m. Litter goes in the bins at the checkpoints, at Gopshus and Läde, in the marked zones between checkpoints, or to someone you know is picking it up for you. Anywhere else can cost you a 15 minute penalty. Friends can follow you in the Vasaloppet app, which sends a notice at each checkpoint and estimates when you'll reach the next. Following runners costs 45 SEK, for up to 25 of them.

Weather and the early start

August in Mora averages a high of 20.3°C and a low of 9.7°C, with about 80 mm of rain over the month, from SMHI's 2002 to 2020 data. The 90 starts at 05:00, so expect a cool start, and the organizer promises the sunrise over the bogs at Smågan.

In 2025 SMHI warned of thunderstorms and strong gusts over Mora on the Friday evening, and Vasaloppet moved the Trailvasan 10 start from 18:00 to 19:15.

Ultravasan FAQ

When is Ultravasan 2027?

Saturday 21 August 2027, when the Ultravasan 90 starts in Sälen at 05:00, the 45 at Oxberg at 10:00 and the Trailvasan 30 at Oxberg at 11:30. The Trailvasan 10 is the evening before, Friday 20 August at 18:00 in Mora.

How long is the Ultravasan 90?

92 km, with 867 m of climbing. The organizer breaks it down as about 60 km of forest road, 6 km of gravel, 18 km of trail and 6 km of asphalt.

What are the Ultravasan cutoffs?

For the 90, 15:50 at Oxberg, 17:20 at Hökberg and 19:00 at Eldris. You have to leave each checkpoint within ten minutes of its cutoff, and if you miss one, Vasaloppet takes you to Mora by bus. The finish closes about 15.5 hours after the start.

Does Ultravasan count for the UTMB Index?

Yes. The 90 is in the UTMB Index 100K category and is worth 3 ITRA points. The 45 is a 50K and worth 1 ITRA point.

Can you run the Vasaloppet trail outside the race?

Yes, but the race trail is only marked and maintained during Vasaloppet's events. For walking or cycling between Sälen and Mora at other times, the organizer recommends the Vasaloppsleden trail.

Is there a relay?

Vasastafetten runs the same 92 km on the same day, starting in Sälen at 08:00. It has ten legs of 4.5 to 15 km, and a team can be anything from two to ten runners. Teams get themselves between the exchanges after the second leg.
