Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko course maps and checkpoints

Four races in Australia's Snowy Mountains, all finishing at Friday Flat in Thredbo. The two longest go over the summit of Mt Kosciuszko.

November 26 to 28, 2026 Thredbo, Perisher and Jindabyne, New South Wales

Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko is the UTMB World Series race in Kosciuszko National Park, in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. It was first run in December 2022. The courses run between the ski villages on mostly runnable trail, and all four end in Thredbo.

The Kosci30 and Kosci50 start at Perisher on Thursday. On Friday the Kosci100 starts at Perisher too, while the KosciMiler sets off from Jindabyne in the dark at 3:00 AM. Only the KosciMiler and Kosci100 cross Mt Kosciuszko, at 2,228 m the highest point on mainland Australia.

The organizer warns that much of the trail is hard for medical help to reach quickly, and its training advice says you can end up "a very long way off the course route in areas with no phone reception". Put the course map on your phone before you drive up. GPS will still place you on it with no signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

The KosciMiler is advertised as 160.5 km, but the time chart puts the finish at 163.1 km, with 4,731 m of climbing. You start at 3:00 AM on Friday by Lake Jindabyne, follow the lake's edge, then take the Thredbo Valley Trail and climb to the alpine plateau. Perisher, Charlotte Pass and the summit come next, around 68 km in.

Charlotte Pass Resort to Charlotte Pass Lookout, over the top of the mountain, is 24 km with no checkpoint, the longest gap on the course. After Guthega you pass Guthega Power Station twice, about 10 km apart, then head back through Smiggin Holes and Perisher. The last part drops into the Thredbo Valley and finishes with a lap up and over the Thredbo ski area. You get 36 hours, and the finish closes at 3:10 PM on Saturday.

Pacers can join or switch at Guthega Power Station (on either visit), Perisher, Bullocks Flat or Keller Plaza, but not at Ngarigo.

Getting an entry

Every distance sold out for 2026. Entries opened on March 10, 2026 for UTMB Index holders, who had 48 hours of priority access, and to everyone else on March 12. The early prices were $1,030 AUD for the KosciMiler, $600 for the Kosci100, $435 for the Kosci50 and $280 for the Kosci30.

The KosciMiler asks for a finish in an official trail race of 50 km or more, between October 15, 2024 and October 15, 2026. If you don't upload one in time, you're moved to the Kosci100, which has no prerequisite. If you can't go, you can transfer your entry to someone in the same distance until 5:00 PM AEDT on November 24, for a $55 fee.

Getting to the Snowy Mountains

A gum tree on the shore of Lake Jindabyne, with low hills across the water

The easiest way in is to fly to Canberra and drive. Jindabyne is about two hours from there, five from Sydney and seven from Melbourne. The organizer suggests having a car for the week, and any car driving into the national park needs a NSW Parks Pass.

Check-in is in Jindabyne on Wednesday and Thursday, with no race-morning check-in. Paid shuttles run to the Perisher starts from Thredbo, Crackenback and Jindabyne, and to the KosciMiler start in Jindabyne from Thredbo and Crackenback. Finish buses go from Thredbo to Jindabyne through Bullocks Flat. Nothing runs from the finish back to Perisher, so the organizer suggests a start shuttle if you have no crew to drive you.

Crewing

Crews can help only at the checkpoints marked for crew in the tables above, and only within 500 m either side of them. The Kosci30 has no crew at all. Crews and spectators can reach Charlotte Pass Resort and Charlotte Pass Lookout only on a paid shuttle from Perisher, and should allow up to 45 minutes each way.

The roads to Guthega are gravel. Guthega Base Camp has little parking and is about 50 minutes from Charlotte Pass via Link Road. The Power Station checkpoint sits at the end of Guthega Road, and you may have to walk 5 to 10 minutes from the car. Bullocks Flat is easy, with plenty of parking, about 20 minutes from Thredbo and 25 from Jindabyne.

Weather and gear

Late November is still spring up here. Thredbo Village, at 1,380 m, averages 17.1°C highs and 4.3°C lows in November, with rain on about 15 days of the month. At Thredbo Top Station, 1,957 m, the averages drop to 12.2°C and 3.2°C, and snow has fallen there in every month of the year.

Every runner carries a thermal top, a waterproof jacket, a beanie or buff, a phone, a bivvy bag (a space blanket doesn't count) and room for 2 litres of water. The KosciMiler and Kosci100 add thermal pants, gloves, a backup light and a hi-vis vest, plus gloves with padded palms in case you fall on the steel mesh sections. The race is cupless, so bring your own cup or bottle.

Kosci FAQ

When is Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko 2026?

November 26 to 28, 2026. The Kosci50 and Kosci30 run on Thursday, November 26, and the KosciMiler and Kosci100 start on Friday, November 27. The last KosciMiler runners finish on Saturday afternoon.

Is the KosciMiler a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Western States lists the KosciMiler as a qualifier if you finish in 36 hours 30 minutes or less, and the Kosci100 if you finish in 20 hours or less, well inside the race's own 28 hour limit.

Do you need a qualifying race for the KosciMiler?

Yes: a finish in an official trail race of 50 km or longer, between October 15, 2024 and October 15, 2026. A backyard ultra result of 50 km or more counts if it's posted on the race's website. The Kosci100 has no prerequisite.

Can you have a pacer at Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko?

Only in the KosciMiler, from the first visit to Guthega Power Station, about 99 km in. You can use up to three, one at a time, swapping at Guthega Power Station, Perisher, Bullocks Flat or Keller Plaza. Pacers run free but must register by November 26, be 18 or older and carry the KosciMiler's mandatory gear.

Does the race go up Mt Kosciuszko?

The KosciMiler and Kosci100 do, about 68 km and 28 km in. The Kosci50 and Kosci30 stay lower: the Kosci50's high point is Eagles Nest.

Is there phone reception on the Kosci course?

The organizer doesn't say for race day. Its training advice warns that if you stray off the route you can end up in areas with no phone reception, and a phone is on every distance's mandatory gear list. Download the Goat Maps course map before you go, so you can see where you are without a signal.
