Ultra-Trail Australia course maps and checkpoints

Five races over three days out of Katoomba, from an 11 km loop below the cliffs to a 100 miler that starts in Blackheath. Every one of them finishes up the Furber Steps.

May 13 to 16, 2027 Katoomba, Blue Mountains, New South Wales

Ultra-Trail Australia is the big autumn trail weekend in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. It was first run in 2008 as The North Face 100, and in 2025 and 2026 it was the UTMB World Series Major for Oceania. For 2026, UTMB expected more than 8,000 runners.

The UTA100, UTA50 and UTA11 start at Scenic World in Katoomba. The UTA22 starts at Queen Victoria Hospital in Wentworth Falls, and the Miler at Govetts Leap in Blackheath. They all finish at Scenic World, at the top of the 951 Furber Steps. In between, they follow cliff tops and long ridgelines and drop into the valleys of Blue Mountains National Park.

The organizer says the courses pass through remote trails, and the runner guide asks you to put the course on your phone and make it available offline. Download the map in Goat Maps before race week: your phone's GPS shows where you are on the course without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with HOKA Ultra-Trail Australia by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

The Miler is billed as 161.1 km, but its time chart puts the finish at 162.9 km, with 7,200 m of climbing. It starts at 5:00 AM on Friday at Govetts Leap and opens with a 12.4 km loop through the Grand Canyon to Evans Lookout and back. Then it descends and climbs through the Grose Valley, taking in Perry's Lookdown, the Blue Gum Forest and the top of Lockleys Pylon. After the Hydro Majestic Hotel above the Megalong Valley it joins the UTA100 course at Narrow Neck Lookout, about 55 km in.

The longest gap is 17.5 km, from Fortress Ridge to the Hydro Majestic. Crews can't reach Fortress Ridge, Tarros or Foggy Knob, so after Narrow Neck Lookout you won't see your crew again until the Six Foot Track at 91.2 km. The runner guide warns of a steep, scrambly descent on Ironpot Ridge and narrow paths with steep drops on the Six Foot Track between the Coxes River and Megalong Road. You have 44 hours 30 minutes from crossing the start mat.

The UTA100 leaves Scenic World on Saturday in start groups between 5:00 and 8:30 AM, and every cutoff is for leaving that checkpoint. The organizer names the landmarks: Narrow Neck, Ironpot Ridge, Leura Forest, Wentworth Falls, Kedumba Pass and the Furber Steps. The course data has a turnaround at Ironpot at 26.4 km.

The first two checkpoints, Tarros at 13.8 km and Foggy Knob at 23.8 km, have no crew access, and it's another 13.5 km to the Six Foot Track. After Queen Victoria Hospital at 79.3 km there's only the Emergency Aid Station before the finish, 22 km away. Men under 14 hours and women under 16 earn a silver buckle; men under 20 and women under 22 a bronze one.

The UTA50 starts at Scenic World on Saturday, in start groups between 5:05 and 8:00 AM, and follows the second half of the UTA100 course. It runs the cliff tops with views of Mt Solitary, reaches Wentworth Falls after about 25 km, then goes down Kedumba Pass and back up to Katoomba by the Furber Steps.

The first checkpoint, Fairmont Resort, is 18.4 km in, and from Queen Victoria Hospital to the finish it's 22.1 km with only the Emergency Aid Station between. Crews can meet you at Fairmont and Queen Victoria Hospital, and there's a drop bag only at the finish.

The UTA22 starts on Friday at Queen Victoria Hospital in Wentworth Falls, in start groups between 6:40 and 9:40 AM. It goes down through the Kedumba Valley and climbs the last section of the Furber Steps to Scenic World. The organizer pitches it at runners new to trail running.

The only stop is the Emergency Aid Station at 13.1 km, and there's no crew support on course. The course data also puts a 4:00 PM cutoff at the base of the Furber Steps, 20.9 km in. The limit is 7 hours, and the minimum age is 16.

UTA UTA11

Echo Point, Leura Forest and Federal Pass, then all 951 Furber Steps to the finish.

The UTA11 starts at Scenic World on Thursday afternoon, between 1:00 and 1:30 PM. It follows the Prince Henry Cliff Walk past Echo Point, descends Fern Bower into Leura Forest and takes the Federal Pass through the Landslide to the base of the Furber Steps. Then you climb all 951 of them to the finish.

Nothing with food or water sits between the start and the finish, so carry the 1 liter of water the kit list asks for. The course data has one cutoff on the way, 5:15 PM at the base of the steps, 10.7 km in. The limit is 4 hours 30 minutes, and runners from 12 years old can enter. The race page gives 11.4 km; the course data measures 11.8.

Entry and start groups

Entry is first come, first served. For 2027, UTMB Index holders had 48 hours of priority from September 15, 2026, and general entries opened on September 17. When this page was checked, the entry page said general entries had sold out and listed charity bibs as still available.

Fees, with processing fees and GST, were A$1,170 for the Miler, A$620 for the UTA100, A$420 for the UTA50, A$260 for the UTA22 and A$160 for the UTA11. The Miler needs an official result of 50 km or more between March 28, 2025 and March 28, 2027; anyone without one by then is moved to the UTA100, which has no prerequisite. There are no deferrals. Withdraw before February 21, 2027 and you get 45% back, or 22% before April 4.

The organizers allocate start groups, looking at your UTMB Index and predicted finish time. Starting in an earlier group than yours is an automatic disqualification. You can start in a later one, but your time runs from that group's start.

Getting to Katoomba

Katoomba is about 100 km west of Sydney, and it's a stop on the Blue Mountains Line. The organizer suggests flying into Sydney Airport.

Free runner shuttles run Thursday to Sunday to Scenic World: a continuous loop from opposite the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba (10 to 15 minutes) and a scheduled service from the Fairmont Resort in Leura (20 to 25 minutes). Miler buses run to the start at Govetts Leap from Leura, Katoomba, Medlow Bath and Blackheath. Parking at the KCC Oval wasn't decided when this page was checked, and spectators need a bus pass, new for 2027, to ride the official buses.

Crewing and pacing

Crews can help only inside a checkpoint, and not in the UTA22 or UTA11. Miler crews can meet runners at Govetts Leap, Perry's Lookdown, the Hydro Majestic, Narrow Neck Lookout, both Six Foot Track visits, the Katoomba Aquatic Centre, Fairmont Resort and Queen Victoria Hospital. In 2026 Perry's Lookdown was by bus only. UTA100 crews get the Six Foot Track, the Aquatic Centre, Fairmont and Queen Victoria Hospital, and UTA50 crews the last two. The UTA100 and UTA50 pages say a standard two-wheel-drive car reaches their crew checkpoints. Crews may not drive, ride or walk on Glenraphael Drive and Narrow Neck or on Megalong Valley Road, and Miler crews must also keep off Mt Hay Road.

Only the Miler has pacers. A pacer can join at the outbound Six Foot Track checkpoint or any checkpoint after it, but not at the Emergency Aid Station. You can have up to three, one at a time, swapping at a checkpoint. Pacers register online for free, must be 18 or older, and carry the full Miler kit.

Weather and kit

May in Katoomba averages a high of 14.1°C and a low of 6.3°C, with 79.8 mm of rain over about ten days (Bureau of Meteorology, 1991 to 2020). The runner guide says Blue Mountains weather ranges from below zero, snow and rain to sunny days, and that the nights are almost always cold, around 5°C at most.

Miler and UTA100 runners carry a thermal top and long thermal pants, a waterproof jacket with a hood and fully taped seams, a beanie or Buff, full-fingered gloves, a headlamp and a backup light, a phone, a space blanket, a compression bandage and 2 liters of water. A high-visibility vest goes on from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Waterproof pants and a fleece are added if the weather calls for them. UTA is cup-less, so bring a reusable cup for the checkpoints. No mandatory gear means no start.

UTA FAQ

When is Ultra-Trail Australia 2027?

May 13 to 16, 2027, in Katoomba. The UTA11 is on Thursday the 13th, the Miler and UTA22 on Friday the 14th, and the UTA100 and UTA50 on Saturday the 15th. The organizer calls the 2027 schedule a draft.

Is UTA a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finishing the 2027 Miler in 44.5 hours or less, or the UTA100 in 19 hours or less, qualifies you for the 2028 Western States lottery.

Do you need a qualifier to run the UTA100 or the Miler?

Not for the UTA100. The Miler needs an official result of 50 km or more from March 28, 2025 to March 28, 2027, uploaded by the 2027 deadline. If you don't have one, your entry moves to the UTA100.

How many Furber Steps are there?
  1. The Miler, UTA100, UTA50 and UTA11 climb all of them to the finish at Scenic World; the UTA22 climbs the last section. The runner guide calls them steep and narrow, and warns UTA11 runners finishing after 5:00 PM that they'll likely climb them as it gets dark.
Can you have a pacer at UTA?

Only in the Miler, from the outbound Six Foot Track checkpoint, about 91 km in. Up to three pacers can take turns, changing over at checkpoints. There are no pacers in the UTA100, UTA50, UTA22 or UTA11.

Is there phone signal on the UTA course?

The organizer doesn't promise any. It calls the trails remote and makes a working phone mandatory kit, and the runner guide tells you to load the course onto your phone for offline use. Download the map in Goat Maps before you go, and your phone's GPS shows where you are without a signal.
