Ultra Paine course maps and aid stations

Four point-to-point races on one line across the ranch land south of Lago del Toro, all finishing at Hotel del Paine in Villa Río Serrano.

September 25, 2027 Torres del Paine, Magallanes, Chile

Ultra Paine has run every year since 2014 apart from 2020, in late September or the first days of October. It's put on by Racing Patagonia, and Puerto Natales is the base town. The first two editions went into Torres del Paine National Park. Since 2016 the route has stayed just outside it, crossing ranch land with the Paine massif as the backdrop.

The four distances share one course. The 50K starts farthest east, at Estancia El Kark, and each shorter race starts at a point further along the same route: Bahía El Bote for the 35K, the Patagonia Camp turnoff for the 21K, and Mirador Grey for the 14K. Everyone finishes at Hotel del Paine. The organizer publishes no course file, so the map pins the stops from its 2026 profile without drawing the route between them. The 2027 courses keep the same distances, and the organizer calls its 2027 table preliminary.

The rules say you'll only have phone signal on parts of the route. Download the map before you leave Natales, and your phone's GPS will place you on it with no signal.

You start at 08:30 at Estancia El Kark on Ruta Y-200 and head west, south of Lago del Toro, on ranch tracks, trails and back roads. For the first 30 km or so the ground stays low and rolling, under about 200 m. The longest gap comes in the middle: 11.4 km from Puente La Península to Puesto Las Dudas.

The big climbs come late. Past Patagonia Camp the course rises to Mirador Grey, where the cutoff is 16:30, and keeps rising beyond Lago Escondido before a steep drop to the finish. You lose more height than you gain, 1,409 m down against 1,333 m up. The stops and their kilometers are from the 2026 profile.

Registration and fees

Entries for 2027 are open now. The 2026 race sold out. There are three price periods, and each can also close early once its places are gone:

  • Super Pre-Sale, 8 June to 8 October
  • Pre-Sale, 9 October to 9 November: USD 225 for the 14K, 287 for the 21K, 318 for the 35K and 370 for the 50K
  • Normal, 10 November to 30 May: USD 242, 308, 342 and 398

Runners from outside Chile pay in dollars through WeTravel, and its commission comes on top. Chilean residents pay in pesos through Welcu, and if you live in Magallanes you get 25% off the Normal price. You must be 18 or older. At least a month before the race you send in a medical certificate that clears you for your distance, plus the signed disclaimer. You can switch distance until 5 August 2027.

For the 35K the rules recommend having finished a trail race of more than 20 km first, and for the 50K one of more than 30 km.

Getting to Puerto Natales and the starts

International flights land in Santiago. From there you fly to Punta Arenas, which has flights every day, and take the bus 250 km up a paved highway to Puerto Natales. The trip is about three hours, with buses from 07:00 to 21:00, some leaving straight from the airport. Puerto Natales has an airport too, but its flights from Santiago are seasonal and don't run every day.

The starts are 70 to 80 km from Natales. The race runs official buses from town to each start and back from the finish, and you buy the ticket in advance, either when you register or later through your registration ticket. You can add seats for friends. A private car can drop you off, but the driver can't be racing, and they have to go straight on to the finish, as nobody may park at the starts or along the course. The official buses only run to and from Natales, so if you're staying in or near the park, ask your lodging about getting to the start.

The course stays outside the national park, so you don't need a park ticket to race.

Aid, crews and your bag

Ultra Paine is run semi-autonomously. You carry your own food and water between aid stations, and since the race hands out no disposable cups, you need a bottle or bladder holding at least 0.5 L.

Friends and family may help you only at certain official points, and only some of those can be reached by car. The runner's guide has the details. No one may run alongside you who isn't registered.

You hand in one bag at your start and get it back at the finish. That's the only drop bag, for every distance. Keep electronics and valuables out of it.

The course crosses ranch land, and the rules list opening a gate as grounds for disqualification. Climb over them carefully instead.

Weather and mandatory kit

Late September is early spring in Patagonia. The organizer expects 2 to 10 °C on average, with highs sometimes above 15 °C, and warns that a storm can still blow through. Puerto Natales averages a high of 12.2 °C and a low of -0.5 °C in September (1991 to 2020 normals).

Every distance requires a hooded waterproof jacket, a long-sleeved base layer, a hat, gloves, a whistle and your drinking container. From the 21K up, sunglasses are mandatory too. The 35K and 50K add a backpack, a survival blanket of at least 140 by 200 cm, reserve food and a small first-aid kit. Staff check kit before the start and may check it again on the course.

Ultra Paine FAQ

When is Ultra Paine 2027?

Saturday 25 September 2027, the 13th edition. All four races run that day. The 50K starts first at 08:30, then the 14K at 09:30, the 21K at 11:00 and the 35K at 11:30. The organizer has already set the next dates as well: 30 September 2028, 29 September 2029 and 28 September 2030.

Does Ultra Paine go into Torres del Paine National Park?

No. The routes went into the park in 2014 and 2015, but since 2016 they've stayed outside it, so you don't need a park entry ticket for the race. You'll only need one if you stay or sightsee inside the park.

How do you get to the start of Ultra Paine?

The race runs official buses from Puerto Natales, 70 to 80 km away, to each start, and back from the finish at Hotel del Paine. Buy your ticket ahead of time. A driver can drop you off at the start but has to leave for the finish once the race begins.

Can my friends crew or run with me at Ultra Paine?

They can help you at certain official points, some of which can be reached by car. The runner's guide has the details. Nobody may run with you on the course unless they're registered for the race.

Is there cell service on the Ultra Paine course?

Only in some sections, the organizer says. A phone is on the recommended kit list anyway, for calling or sharing your location wherever you do get signal. Download the map in Goat Maps before you leave Natales.

How many ITRA points is Ultra Paine worth?

The 50K and 35K are worth 2 ITRA points each and the 21K is worth 1. The 14K has none. For the UTMB Index the 50K counts in the 50K category, and the other three count as 20K.
