True Grit Epic course maps and feed zones

Three days of desert racing out of Santa Clara Town Hall: gravel on Friday, mountain bikes on Saturday, and a stage race that rides both.

March 18 to 20, 2027 Santa Clara (St. George), Utah

True Grit Epic is an early-season mountain bike and gravel race in Santa Clara, the small town next to St. George in the southwest corner of Utah. Its mountain bike races open the NUE Series season. The 50 and the 100 ride rocky singletrack in four desert trail systems around Green Valley and Stucki Springs, and the gravel races head west over two passes and through the Joshua trees of the Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area. Every race except Stage 1 of the stage race starts and finishes at Town Hall.

2027 is the first edition under new owners, Zia Rides of Albuquerque, who took over the race from GRO Races and plan to keep the format largely the same. The 2027 courses aren't out yet, so the map shows the 2026 ones, from the organizer's own Ride with GPS routes.

Those routes measure shorter than the race names: the 50 is about 43 miles, the 100 about 84 and the gravel 84 about 80. Marking on the mountain bike course was minimal in 2026 because of new BLM rules, and the gravel race page tells you to navigate by GPS rather than signs. Download the map so your position shows on the course even without a signal.

The 100 rides the 50 Mile course twice. At the end of the first lap you don't return to Town Hall: the organizer's route turns you back onto the course just after your second stop at the Barrel feed zone. So you pass a feed zone eight times, Zen and Barrel twice on each lap. The 2026 route measures 83.7 miles with about 9,000 feet of climbing.

The 100 goes off first, at 7:50 AM. According to the Mountain page it has the same cutoff times as the 50, including the 6:00 PM finish.

After a one mile escorted neutral start through town, the climbing begins as soon as you reach the dirt. The course strings together four trail systems, from steep rock drops and punchy technical climbs to fast, flowing singletrack. Watch for the Barrel Trail Water Fall, the Zen Wall, the Three Fingers of Death and the Notch. There's a one mile no-passing zone through bear-claw poppy habitat.

You hit the Zen feed zone before and after the Zen loop, and the Barrel feed zone before and after the Barrel Rolls. Cutoffs: 12:45 to start Zen, 2:45 at the Zen feed zone, 4:00 at the junction of Stucki Springs and Rim Runner, 4:30 to start the Barrel Rolls, and 6:00 PM at the finish. The 2026 route measures 43.2 miles with about 4,600 feet of climbing. Relay teams split this course and swap only at the Zen feed zone.

The Challenge starts in the last wave, after the 50, then at mile 2.4 goes straight down into the wash and climbs out to the west instead of following the 50's markings. It rejoins the 50 and 100 course on the rocky ridge at mile 2.6 and heads for the Rim Runner loops, passing the Barrel feed zone twice.

There are no cutoffs, and the minimum age is 12. It's the same terrain the long races ride, steep drop-offs and ledges included.

True Grit Gravel 84: Tough Stuff

A seven mile escorted neutral start takes you through St. George to Navajo Drive, where the dirt and the timing begin. Blake's Dug Way climbs at up to 18% to the first feed zone on Hard Rootbeer Hill. Then you drop down Joshua Tree Road and Bulldog Pass Road, a long fast descent through the Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area, and spin up Old Highway 91 to the Lytle Ranch Road feed zone. Indian Trail Road, the Rollers of Doom, comes next, then ten miles down Motaqua Road past sand and sandstone pillars, and the Santa Clara River before pavement back to town.

The organizer calls it 84 miles and 9,000 feet; its 2026 route measures 79.5 miles and about 6,900 feet. Commit to the Pickle is a self-serve stash box. You must carry a GPS device, a red tail light, two liters of fluid, two spare tubes, a pump and a phone.

The Sweet Stuff rolls out five minutes after the 84, without a police escort, in the opposite direction. It rides west to the Lytle Ranch Road feed zone and from there follows the 84's route home past the Pickle, Motaqua Road and the Santa Clara River.

The organizer runs the 64 as a ride with no podium, and the clock only counts from Lytle Ranch Road to the finish. E-bikes are allowed here if you declare them and carry a spare battery. The route the organizer links was last edited in 2024 and measures 67.2 miles with about 5,300 feet of climbing.

The stage race is three days: a self-supported ride on Thursday, the Gravel 84 on Friday and the 50 Mile on Saturday, scored on points. Stage 1 isn't timed, but you must ride it, check in and out at race headquarters, and show your recording.

In 2026 Stage 1 was the Turkey Farm Loop from the Pioneer Rim trailhead, with a gravel and a mountain bike version; the map shows the gravel one, 48 miles with about 4,000 feet of climbing. There were no markings or marshals. The 2027 ride will be announced ten days before the race.

Registration and fees

Registration for 2027 opened on September 7, 2026, on BikeReg, with the field capped at 1,000 across all events. Each race has its own limit, and a waitlist opens when one fills. Getting there and parking

Santa Clara sits beside St. George, about 120 miles north of Las Vegas and 300 miles south of Salt Lake City, 8 miles from the Arizona border. Take the Dixie Drive exit off Interstate 15, head north to Sunset Boulevard and turn left; Town Hall is a mile along. St. George's airport has nonstop flights from Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and Denver, or you can fly into Las Vegas and take a shuttle.

There's no rider parking at Town Hall. Park on nearby streets, at the Canyon View overflow lot or at Snow Canyon High School, and plan to ride up to a mile to the start. Canyon View Park, 0.7 miles from the start, has tent and van camping you reserve with your entry, with priority for stage and 100 Mile racers. Moe's Valley is closed to camping, and the organizer asks you not to camp near the Zen trailhead.

Crews, feed zones and drop bags

The mountain bike course is closed to the public, but friends can reach you at both feed zones. Zen is in Green Valley, off Canyon View Drive; for Barrel, park at the bottom of Stucki Springs Road and walk up the road, not the trail. Miles 4 to 23 are visible from the top of Canyon View Drive, across the valley. The feed zones have real food (potatoes, bacon, sandwiches), fruit, CarboRocket and water, but few gels or bars, so carry your own.

On the gravel, crews and spectators may meet you only at Lytle Ranch Road and the Santa Clara River. A crew vehicle anywhere else on the course gets its rider disqualified.

Drop bags go from the start to either mountain bike feed zone, and only to Lytle Ranch Road on the gravel. Use zip-lock or drawstring bags or a cooler of 12 inches or less: grocery bags go straight to lost and found.

Weather, bikes and rules

St. George averages a high of 67.8°F and a low of 39.0°F in March, with about an inch of rain for the month. The organizer has seen race weekends from 85°F down to 32°F and snowing, so pack for both. In mud, the mountain bike course is rerouted around Cove Wash, and the race can be pushed back a day.

A 29er hardtail is the most popular bike for the mountain bike races, though full suspension helps on the Barrel and Zen trails. NUE rules don't allow switching bikes, and the BLM doesn't allow e-bikes on the mountain bike course. The course crosses desert tortoise habitat: if you see one, tell the nearest official.

True Grit FAQ

When is True Grit Epic 2027?

March 18 to 20, 2027. Stage 1 of the stage race and packet pick-up are on Thursday the 18th, the gravel races on Friday the 19th, and the mountain bike races on Saturday the 20th.

How long is the True Grit 50 really?

The organizer's 2026 route measures 43.2 miles with about 4,600 feet of climbing. The 100 is two laps of it, about 84 miles, and the Gravel 84 route measures 79.5.

Is True Grit Epic part of the NUE Series?

Yes, it opens the NUE season. The 100 Mile counts for the Epic 100 series, and every 50 Mile rider is ranked in an NUE category and earns points.

Who runs True Grit Epic now?

Zia Rides, an Albuquerque company, took over from GRO Races for 2027, with Seth Bush as event director. Cimarron Chacon started the race in 2011 with 130 riders in the first Epic 50.

Can I ride an e-bike at True Grit?

Only in the Gravel 64, and you must declare it and carry a spare battery. E-bikes are banned from the mountain bike races and the Gravel 84.

Is the True Grit course marked?

Yes, but lightly. In 2026 the mountain bike course had minimal marking under new BLM rules, with orange ribbon and yellow signs. The gravel race page says not to rely on markings and to follow the GPS route, and Stage 1 had no markings at all in 2026. Load the course before you go.
