Transvulcania course maps and aid stations

A 73 km run along the volcanic spine of La Palma, from the lighthouse at its southern tip over the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente and down to the sea, plus four shorter races on parts of the same trails.

May 6 to 8, 2027 La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain

Transvulcania has been run on La Palma since 2009, and the island's council organizes it through its public company, Sodepal. The ultra starts at sea level by the Fuencaliente lighthouse at 6:00 AM. It follows the GR 131 north up the Cumbre Vieja volcanoes to El Pilar, then climbs the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente to Roque de los Muchachos, the island's high point. From there it drops to the harbor at Puerto de Tazacorte and climbs back up the GR 130 to the finish in Los Llanos de Aridane.

The marathon, half marathon and the new 12K Light share parts of that line, and the Vertical Kilometer climbs the cliff above Tazacorte two days earlier. The 2027 edition, the 17th, runs May 6 to 8. In 2026 records fell in all eight competitive categories, and David Sinclair (6:32:24) and Blandine L'Hirondel (7:43:47) now hold the ultra records.

The distances, climbing, aid stations and cutoffs here are from the organizer's current course pages, most of which still link course files named for 2024. Download the map before you fly: you'll have the line and every aid station on your phone, and GPS shows where you are without a data connection.

You start at sea level in the dark and climb almost without a break for 17 km, through Los Canarios to Las Deseadas at 1,827 m. Poles stay on your pack until Los Canarios. The first cutoff is at El Pilar, 11:00, and El Reventón is about 7 km further on.

From El Reventón to Pico de la Cruz is the longest gap: 14.9 km with about 1,400 m of climbing, and you must leave El Reventón carrying at least a liter. Inside the national park you can't use poles from Pico de las Ovejas to Punta de los Roques, or from Mirador de los Andenes to the Isaac Newton Telescope. Roque de los Muchachos closes at 17:00. From there you lose about 2,400 m in 17 km down to Puerto de Tazacorte, and the last 5 km climb about 360 m to the finish in Plaza de España.

New for 2027, the 12K Light is the race's way in for first-timers. It starts at the El Pilar refuge at 10:30 AM and follows a wide track for 4 km to Llano de las Moscas, the one aid station, which has drinks only. From there a 3 km climb crosses the San Juan lava flows and pine forest to the high point at 1,848 m, and you come back down the GR 131 on the ultra's line to El Pilar. The launch announcement gives 494 m of climbing, though the course page says 774 m. It's limited to 500 runners, and the course closes at 14:00.

Registration and entry rules

Registration for 2027 opened on May 22, 2026, on the race website, and more than 2,000 people signed up in the first 24 hours. The organizer counted over 1,000 runners on the waiting list for 2026. In October 2026 the ultra, marathon, half and VK pages offered only a waiting list, while the 12K Light was still open.

For the ultra you need to have finished a mountain race of at least 40 km since January 1, 2026, and for the marathon one of at least 20 km. If you haven't run it yet, your place is held until October 31, 2026. Both are for adults only. The first 500 places in the ultra, marathon and half cost €90, €65 and €55, and €110, €85 and €75 after that. The 12K Light is €55. La Palma residents pay less for the ultra, marathon, half and 12K Light.

You get 80% back if you cancel before December 31, 2026, and 50% from January 1 to April 8, 2027. From April 10 there are no refunds. Bibs are handed out May 5 to 7, only to you and only with ID.

Getting to La Palma and the start

La Palma Airport is 8 km south of Santa Cruz de La Palma. The ultra finishes in Los Llanos de Aridane, and shuttle buses run there from the half and marathon finishes without booking.

Your entry includes the bus to your start and back from the finish, and you book the seats on the race website. In 2026 the ultra buses left Santa Cruz, Los Cancajos, Los Llanos, El Paso, Tazacorte harbor and the Meliá hotel at 3:45 AM, and the other four stops up to an hour later. Buses back ran at 7:00 PM, 10:00 PM and 12:30 AM. Your bag goes from the start to the finish, and you can't take poles in it.

Crewing and watching

There are two assistance zones, at El Pilar and Roque de los Muchachos, with one support person per runner. Any help more than 50 m from an aid station gets you disqualified.

In 2026 spectators could drive to the lighthouse only by the LP-209 from Las Indias, parking along the LP-207, and had to stay until the half marathon had started. El Pilar was open by car only from San Isidro on the LP-301, with shuttles up from the El Paso side. At Roque de los Muchachos traffic stopped at the Gran Telescopio Canarias, about a kilometer from the aid station, and shuttles ran the rest of the way.

Weather and kit

In May the coast is mild: the airport averages highs of 22.9°C and lows of 17.6°C (1991 to 2020 normals). The course spends hours far above that, and clouds on La Palma tend to form between 1,000 and 2,000 m. The regulation tells runners to pack for wind, cold and possible snow rather than going as light as they can.

The regulation's mandatory kit is a pack or belt that holds at least a liter, a headlamp of 200 lumens or more, a 2 by 1 m thermal blanket, a whistle, a collapsible cup (there are no cups at aid stations), and a charged phone that stays on and out of airplane mode. The half and 12K pages ask only for a thermal blanket, a phone, a cup and a whistle, and the VK's for the last three. Depending on the forecast, the organizer can add a cold kit or a heat kit, announced at least 72 hours before your start.

Transvulcania FAQ

When is Transvulcania 2027?

May 6 to 8, 2027. The Vertical Kilometer is on Thursday the 6th, the kids races on Friday the 7th, and the ultra, marathon, half and 12K Light on Saturday the 8th.

How hard is Transvulcania?

The ultra is 73 km with 4,350 m of climbing and 4,057 m of descent, from sea level to about 2,420 m and back down to the sea before the last climb to Los Llanos. You have 16 hours, with cutoffs at El Pilar, Roque de los Muchachos and Puerto de Tazacorte. In 2026, 928 of 1,066 starters finished.

How do you qualify for the Transvulcania ultra?

Finish a mountain race of at least 40 km after January 1, 2026, and show it when you register, or by October 31, 2026 at the latest. The marathon asks for one of at least 20 km. The half and the VK don't need one.

Can you use poles at Transvulcania?

Yes, with exceptions. In the ultra and half, poles stay on your pack for the first 7.67 km to Los Canarios. In the ultra and marathon they are banned from Pico de las Ovejas to Refugio Punta de los Roques and from Mirador de los Andenes to the Isaac Newton Telescope. Breaking either rule means disqualification.

Can my crew help me during Transvulcania?

Only in the assistance zones at El Pilar and Roque de los Muchachos, and only one person per runner. Outside the aid stations nobody can hand you anything.

Is Transvulcania still part of the UTMB World Series?

No. It was part of the UTMB World Series only in 2022 and 2023. Before that it was in the Skyrunner World Series, from 2012 to 2019.
