Transgrancanaria course maps and aid stations

A week of trail races across Gran Canaria, 22 to 28 February 2027, ending with a 126 km crossing of the island from Las Palmas to Maspalomas.

February 22 to 28, 2027 Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Transgrancanaria has crossed Gran Canaria on foot since 2003. The Classic, part of the World Trail Majors, starts at midnight on Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas, climbs through Teror and Artenara to the pine forests around Roque Nublo, and comes down the dry south side of the island to Parque Sur in Maspalomas. The Advanced and the Marathon join the same line further in, at Teror and Tejeda.

The shorter races spread over the week: the new Open Agáldar in the northwest on Tuesday, the KV El Gigante up the wall of Tamadaba on Wednesday, the Half and the Promo into Tejeda on Thursday, and the Short and Family Trail in Teror on Saturday. Stages, also new for 2027, strings the Open Agáldar, KV, Promo and Advanced into one race over four days.

Three of the Classic's aid stations are closed to crews. Download the course map before you go: GPS shows where you are without a signal, and your crew can see which stations they can drive to.

The organizer gives 126 km and 6,764 m of climbing, with 30 hours to finish. You start at 23:59 on Friday from Las Canteras beach and spend the night climbing inland through Tenoya, Arucas and Teror to Fontanales. Tenoya serves only liquids. El Hornillo, Artenara and Tejeda take you through the middle of the island. Between Tejeda and El Garañón the course passes the foot of Roque Nublo, then drops past Tunte and the Ayagaures dam to Parque Sur.

The longest gaps are El Hornillo to Artenara and Ayagaures to the finish, about 14 km each, and crews can't reach El Hornillo or Ayagaures. You get life bags at Fontanales and El Garañón.

The Advanced starts at 09:00 on Saturday in front of the basilica in Teror. It follows the Classic's course to Fontanales, goes straight to Artenara where the Classic detours by El Hornillo, and shares the rest of the way. The organizer gives 82 km and 4,314 m of climbing, and 21 hours. The first half takes in Artenara, the Tejeda Caldera, Tejeda and the Nublo Rural Park, and the course file's high point, about 1,740 m, is right below Roque Nublo. After that the south face is drier and mostly downhill to Maspalomas.

Your one life bag is at El Garañón. Crews can meet you at Artenara, Tejeda, El Garañón and Tunte, but not at Fontanales or Ayagaures.

Registration

Entry is online through RockTheSport. By September 2026 more than 5,000 runners had entered for 2027, and the Marathon, the Promo and the Open Agáldar had sold out with waitlists. The platform takes entries until 31 January 2027 for distances with places left.

Since 15 September the fees are €225 for the Classic, €180 for the Advanced, €125 for the Marathon, €85 for the Half, €80 for the Open Agáldar, €50 for the Promo, Short and KV, and €340 for Stages. Canary Islands residents get a discount, and a high ITRA score can get you half price or a free entry.

The Classic, Advanced and Stages need a medical certificate, uploaded by 21 January 2027. Without refund insurance you get 50% back until 21 October 2026, 40% until 23 December, and nothing after. Transfers and changes of distance close 30 days before the race.

Getting to the starts

Gran Canaria Airport is on the east coast, about 19 km south of Las Palmas and 25 km from the resorts in the south. Bib collection and the Trail Zone are at Expomeloneras in Maspalomas. They open on Monday 22 February, when only the KV, Half, Open Agáldar, Stages and Promo bibs are handed out.

Every race starts away from Maspalomas, at Las Canteras, Teror, Tejeda, Artenara, Santa Lucía, Caideros or Agaete, and the organizer sells transport when you register. In Tejeda and Artenara, the race asks anyone seeing runners off to leave town before the start, to avoid jams at Cruz Grande. In Teror there's free public parking a five minute walk from the start.

Crewing and life bags

Crews can help only in the 100 m before and after an aid station, never inside it, and only in the Classic, Advanced, Marathon and Half. On the Classic that means Arucas, Teror, Fontanales, Artenara, Tejeda, El Garañón and Tunte. Tenoya and El Hornillo are closed to crews and spectators, the road to El Hornillo is shut, and Ayagaures has no crew access.

Don't drive into El Garañón: park at Los Llanos de La Pez and walk in. At the finish, spectators can't use the car park nearest Parque Sur.

Classic runners get life bags at Fontanales and El Garañón, Advanced runners at El Garañón. You hand them in at bib collection, in the race's 35 by 50 cm bags, and anything left in them comes back to Expomeloneras on Sunday from 09:00 to 14:00.

Weather and kit

On the coast, February is mild: at Gran Canaria Airport the 1991 to 2020 normals give an average high of 21.3°C and a low of 15.3°C. The courses climb to about 1,700 m, and on every race longer than 12 km the organizer makes a cold kit mandatory: warm gloves, windproof trousers, a thermal top and long thermal tights. It decides two days before the race whether to keep it, drop it or drop part of it.

The Classic's kit also includes 1.5 liters of water, a cup, a headlamp of at least 200 lumens with spare batteries, a red rear light, a waterproof jacket, an emergency blanket, a phone that works in Spain and at least €50 in cash. Aid stations have no cups. Poles are banned for the first 2 km of every race but the KV.

Transgrancanaria FAQ

When is Transgrancanaria 2027?

From 22 to 28 February 2027. The Classic starts at 23:59 on Friday 26 February from Las Canteras in Las Palmas, the Marathon that morning from Tejeda, and the Advanced on Saturday 27 February from Teror. The finish in Maspalomas closes at 06:00 on Sunday.

Is Transgrancanaria a Western States qualifier?

Yes, the Classic is. Western States lists it with a 28 hour qualifying time, and the February 2027 race falls in the qualifying window for the 2028 Western States.

What is Transgrancanaria Stages?

A four-day race, new for 2027: the Open Agáldar on Tuesday, the KV El Gigante on Wednesday, the Promo on Thursday and the Advanced on Saturday, about 120 km and 6,886 m of climbing in all. Each stage keeps its own cutoffs and kit, so the stages are mapped here as those four courses. It costs €340, and you'll need a medical certificate.

Where can crews meet runners on the Transgrancanaria Classic?

At Arucas, Teror, Fontanales, Artenara, Tejeda, El Garañón and Tunte, within 100 m of the aid station. Not at Tenoya, El Hornillo or Ayagaures.

Can you use poles at Transgrancanaria?

Yes, except in the first 2 km of every race. On the KV El Gigante you can use them once the course reaches the trail.

Is the 2027 Transgrancanaria course the same as 2026?

The aid stations, distances and cutoffs on this page come from the organizer's 2027 race pages. The GPX files it links are still the 2026 ones for every course but the Open Agáldar, which is new. Check the race pages for changes before you go.
