Transalpine Run stage maps and aid stations

Seven days on foot across the Swiss Alps, from Lenzerheide in Graubünden over the Greina plateau to Lago Maggiore.

2027 dates not announced yet, usually in August Lenzerheide to Locarno, Switzerland

The Transalpine Run is a seven-stage race across the Alps, run in teams of two or solo. It has run since 2005, on a different route most years. In 2026, its 21st edition, the whole course stayed in Switzerland for the first time: from Lenzerheide through Ilanz, Vrin, Olivone, Biasca and Sonogno to Locarno.

The map shows that 2026 route. The organizer hasn't named a place, route or date for 2027.

The runner guide makes downloading the GPX files mandatory, and each team has to carry the route for emergencies, printed or on a watch or phone. The trails are remote, and vehicles can't reach most of them. Put the stages on your phone before you go and GPS will show you where you are without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Dynafit Transalpine Run. Check the official site before you enter or race.

In 2026 a cold front brought a forecast of thunderstorms and gusts up to 100 km/h, so the organizer moved the stage lower. The stage here and the line on the map are that weather route: a 19 km loop with 1,275 m of climbing over Urdenfürggli and Gredigs Fürggli, with one aid station, at the Scharmoin middle station, km 14. RUN2 teams run this stage too.

As planned, stage 1 is a 33 km loop with 2,405 m of climbing. It crosses Urdenfürggli (2,545 m) to the first aid station at the Hörnlihütte, km 11, drops to the Aroser Alp, then climbs over Gredigs Fürggli (2,615 m) to the second, on the Parpaner Rothorn (2,856 m) at km 24. The last 9 km run down past Alp Sanaspans to the Sport Area in Lenzerheide. The organizer's file of the planned stage isn't public any more.

Stage 2

Transalpine Run Stage 2: Lenzerheide to Ilanz

At 51 km this was the longest stage of 2026, and the only one with a 6:00 start. The first 5 km climb to the Raschiljoch (2,328 m). From there the course loses about 1,500 m on the way to the first aid station, at Paspels, 16 km in.

After Paspels the aid stations come every 10 km or less: Rhäzüns, Versam and Carpäll. Between Versam and Carpäll you drop to Versam station, down in the Rhine Gorge, and climb out again. It's the last stage for RUN2 teams, who finish here in Ilanz.

From Ilanz at 700 m you climb to the Bündner Rigi aid station at km 10, then on over Piz Mundaun (2,064 m) and Piz Sezner (2,309 m). That's a 13 km gap to the next aid station, at Schlareins, so leave Bündner Rigi with enough to drink.

The last 7 km run down and along the valley to Vrin, at 1,459 m. Bring warm clothes for the finish area: the runner guide asks you to.

This stage has a flying start. In 2026 the race briefing let you leave Vrin any time from 7:00 to 8:30, and the cutoffs here are the briefing's, with the finish closing at 17:30.

After the early aid station at Parvalsauns you climb Pass Diesrut (2,428 m) and cross the Greina plateau by the Passo della Greina (2,355 m). That's 15 km without aid, to Pian Geirett. Campo Blenio follows at km 27, then one last climb, Passo Cantonill (1,936 m), before the long drop to Olivone at 885 m.

The first aid station is the Capanna Gorda hut, 8.5 km and nearly 1,000 m up from Olivone. The course tops out at the Bassa di Nara (2,095 m) before Alpe Garina, the second aid station, at km 21.

The last 14 km have no aid, and they hurt. Between Sosto (km 26, 1,600 m) and Loderio (km 33, 395 m) you lose about 1,200 m in 7 km, then run the flat into Biasca.

The first half follows the Verzasca downstream through Frasco, Brione and Corippo. The Brione aid station is off the line: cross the bridge to it and come back the same way.

After Mergoscia at km 22 the course climbs about 1,100 m to El Trosa (1,869 m), runs over Cimetta to the last aid station at Cardada, and drops through Orselina to Locarno at 197 m. The finish is at the Lido.

Entering

Entry is online. Teams of two register together for TAR Team, and you can't sign up alone and find a partner later. Runners on their own enter TAR Solo. RUN2 covers the first two stages only, for teams of two, and was capped at 150 teams in 2026. It sold out.

You have to be at least 18, and the organizer expects alpine experience, the training to match and a good sense of direction. The entry covers luggage transport, a lunch or dinner every day, shuttles, and food and water on every stage.

If your partner can't go on during race week, you can't switch to Solo. You can keep running outside the rankings as an individual finisher.

Getting there and between stages

Lenzerheide is about 40 minutes by Postbus from the train station in Chur. Parking for the week, booked in advance, is at Parking Valbella Nord.

Each day your TAR bag (up to 23 kg) travels from the start to the finish area, not to your hotel. Daily shuttles run from each finish to the accommodation areas, and your guest card gets you free local public transport. You book your own beds in each stage town, or take the accommodation package from the organizer's partner, Host GmbH.

The shuttle back from Locarno to Lenzerheide leaves at 8:00 the morning after the finish and takes about three hours. Book it in advance.

Following the race

The runner guide names a spot to watch each day. On stage 2 there's a cheering zone in Versam, between the second and third aid stations; park at the Versamer Tobelbrücke and walk the course. On stage 3 a gondola takes you up to the course at Hitzeggen. Vrin has almost no parking, so take the bus from Ilanz or Lumnezia.

On stage 4, Campo Blenio's aid station has a few parking spaces. On stage 6 you can watch at the Ticino river crossing, or drive the narrow road up to the first aid station. On the last day there are several good places between Brione and Mergoscia in the Verzasca valley.

Weather and kit

The race runs at the end of summer, but the runner guide warns that snow and freezing temperatures are possible higher up. In 2026 the weather cut stage 1 short, and the next six days brought summer weather. Locarno, at the finish, averages highs of 26.9°C in August and 22.1°C in September (Locarno/Monti, 1991 to 2020), with about 200 mm of rain in each month.

The mandatory kit includes a waterproof jacket with taped seams and a hood, a hat and gloves, long layers for arms and legs, a litre of water and food labelled with your bib number. Each team carries a first aid kit and a charged phone. Helmet, spikes and headlamp are needed only on stages the organizer announces. Aid stations hand out no cups, so carry a folding one.

Transalpine Run FAQ

When is the Transalpine Run 2027?

The organizer hasn't announced the 2027 dates or route yet. The last two editions ran from 6 to 12 September 2025 and from 28 August to 3 September 2026.

Does the map show the 2027 route?

No. It shows the 2026 stages, Lenzerheide to Locarno. The route changes most years.

Can you run the Transalpine Run solo?

Yes. TAR Solo is its own category, and solo runners carry the whole mandatory kit, including the items each team shares.

What is RUN2?

The first two stages of the Transalpine Run as a race of their own, for teams of two. In 2026 that was the Lenzerheide loop and Lenzerheide to Ilanz, on 28 and 29 August.

Does the Transalpine Run give ITRA or UTMB points?

Finishing all seven stages earns 5 ITRA points. The organizer's FAQ says the race earns no UTMB qualifying points.

What do the aid stations have?

Water and sports drink to refill bottles, plus cola, tea and coffee, and food such as fruit, bread, cake, cheese, sausage, soup, gels and bars. There are two to four a day (just one on the 2026 weather route of stage 1), so carry enough to reach the next.
