The Rut Mountain Runs course maps and aid stations

Five courses on Lone Peak at Big Sky Resort, from a 6.45 mile forest loop to a 50K over the 11,166 ft summit.

2027 dates not announced yet, usually in September Big Sky, Montana

The Rut is a weekend of mountain races at Big Sky Resort in southwest Montana, all of them on or around Lone Peak. Mike Foote and Mike Wolfe started it in 2013 with a 50K and a 12K. Races start with an elk bugle, and by 2025 the weekend had roughly 4,500 registered runners.

The VK and the 21K run on Friday, the 28K on Saturday, and the 50K and 11K on Sunday, all from the base area. The VK goes straight up to the summit. The 28K and 50K climb Headwaters ridge and cross the top of Lone Peak on steep, exposed ground, with off-trail sections marked by pin flags.

The organizer says there's cell service on most of the courses. A map you've downloaded doesn't need it, and on climbs this steep it helps to know how far the next aid station is. The lines on the map are the organizer's 2026 courses. The 21K route doesn't mark its aid stations, so the Challenger pin sits at the chart's mile 4.05 along its line. The 2027 courses aren't out yet.

In 2026 the 50K left the base area at 6 AM on Sunday, in waves five minutes apart, so the first runners started in the dark. A headlamp is on the mandatory list, with a waterproof jacket, a space blanket and 32 oz of water. The first 10.6 miles take you past the two Moonlight aid stations. The longest gap comes next, 8 miles and 3,380 ft of climbing from Moonlight #2 over Headwaters ridge to Swiftcurrent, where your drop bag waits.

From there it's 1.2 miles and 1,970 ft up to the summit of Lone Peak, then 2.2 miles and 2,650 ft down to Shedhorn, which has Skratch products only. The organizer calls the Headwaters and Lone Peak sections extremely steep and technical, with exposure and rockfall, and marks the route with orange pin flags. Cutoffs are clock times, the same for every wave, and in 2026 the course closed at 7 PM.

The organizer describes the 28K as the 50K, but harder: it packs in the gnarliest parts of the longer race. In 2026 its waves left the base area from 7:20 to 8:30 AM on Saturday, following blue flags, and climbed 1,650 ft to the Headwaters aid station at mile 3.9. The 5.2 miles on to Swiftcurrent climb another 2,420 ft. From Swiftcurrent you gain 2,000 ft in 1.3 miles to the summit, where the aid station has Skratch products only, then drop 3,450 ft in 4.2 miles to Moosetracks.

Mandatory gear is a waterproof jacket, a space blanket and 16 oz of water. If the weather turns extreme, there's a Plan B course that stays out of the exposed alpine terrain.

The 21K was added in 2023 to fill the gap between the 11K and the 28K. In 2026 it ran on Friday, with waves from 10:00 to 11:10 AM. It climbs about 4,000 ft on Big Sky's singletrack in one big loop along the edge of the alpine, and stays off the exposed ridgelines the 28K and 50K cross. The mandatory gear list doesn't cover it, and pink flags mark the way.

The first stretch is the longest: 4.05 miles to Challenger, which spectators can't reach, though they can get to Swiftcurrent and Andesite. From Andesite it's 3.9 miles and 1,630 ft down to the finish.

The 11K started in waves at 7:30 AM on Sunday in 2026. Marked with purple flags, it follows the 50K in reverse through the forest to a high point just below the top of Andesite Mountain, with Lone Peak and Headwaters Ridge in view. The only aid station is there, at mile 4.7, with water and Skratch drink. After a short stretch of dirt road, the Africa trail drops steeply to Moosetracks and back to the base. The 2026 aid chart gives no cutoffs.

In 2026 the VK started all at once at 9 AM on Friday, from the base area at 7,534 ft. The first half follows the Huntley Hollow and Calamity Jane ski runs to the top of the Swiftcurrent lift, about 1.7 miles in, where there's a one hour cutoff. The second half, up Bonecrusher and Alto Ridge, is extremely steep and exposed, with a 90 minute cutoff at the top of Bonecrusher and 2.5 hours to reach the summit.

Drop a bag at the start and it goes up to the finish: pack a layer and a cup, since the summit aid station is cupless. You ride the Lone Peak Tram and the Explorer Gondola back down. If it's cold or wet, a waterproof jacket and a space blanket become mandatory. There's also a Jorts Division: run it in cutoff jeans and you could win a denim vest.

Registration

Registration for 2027 opens on January 12 at 8 AM Mountain Time, on RunSignup. Every race sold out in 2026 and the Rut keeps no waitlist, so be ready when it opens. In 2026 the 50K cost $175 and was capped at 825 runners, the 28K $150 (900), the 21K $125 (900), the 11K $70 (1,200), the VK $80 (375) and the Trifecta $395 (100). Each extra race you add takes $5 off.

You have to be 16 for the VK, 28K and 50K. When you sign up you give an estimated finish time, which sets your wave. Entries can't be sold or handed on, and you show photo ID at packet pickup. You can move down to a shorter race until August 15, but never into the VK.

Getting to Big Sky

Big Sky is a town of about 2,300 people in the Madison Range, on US Highway 191 halfway between Bozeman and West Yellowstone. Fly into Bozeman (BZN), which gets more than 25 flights a day, and it's a 45 minute drive up the Gallatin Canyon. The race's travel page lists airport shuttles.

Packet pickup and every start are in the base area at Big Sky Resort, and every race but the VK finishes there too. Pickup is in Vista Hall in The Exchange, and the Huntley Lodge is a 30 second walk from the start line. The resort gives Rut runners up to 20% off rooms. It doesn't allow camping, but there are Forest Service campgrounds along the Gallatin River. Yellowstone is about an hour away if you stay on.

Crews and spectators

No Rut course allows crewing. Your friends can still see you at several aid stations, and the lifts do most of the work. A scenic lift ticket ($67 for an adult in 2026, less for extra days) covers the Ramcharger lift, the Explorer Gondola and the Lone Peak Tram:

  • Swiftcurrent: top of the Explorer Gondola (50K, 28K and 21K)
  • Lone Peak summit: Explorer Gondola, then the tram (50K, 28K and the VK finish)
  • Andesite: top of the Ramcharger lift (50K, 21K and 11K)

The Moonlight aid stations were closed to spectators in 2026. You can still see 50K runners near mile 8 by parking at the Madison Base area and walking up a short hill. Anyone who'd rather hike to an aid station is welcome to.

Weather and gear

Big Sky in mid-September is usually mild and settled, but these are high mountains and it can turn fast. In town, September averages a high of 68°F and a low of 33°F (NOAA's 1991-2020 normals), and the summit of Lone Peak is 3,632 ft above the start. In 2024 there was snow, wind and below-freezing cold on the summit. In 2016, snow on 50K day sent the race onto its Plan B course.

You show your mandatory gear at packet pickup to get your bib. For the 28K that's a hooded waterproof jacket, a space blanket and 16 oz of water. Water resistant won't pass: the organizer names the Patagonia Houdini as a jacket that doesn't count. The 50K needs 32 oz and a headlamp as well. Every race is cupless, so carry a cup. The courses are in grizzly and black bear country, so the organizer recommends bear spray. It also suggests poles for the steep climbs.

The Rut FAQ

When is The Rut 2027?

The 2027 dates aren't announced yet. The Rut is held in September: the 2026 edition ran September 10 to 13, with the VK and 21K on Friday, the 28K on Saturday and the 50K and 11K on Sunday. Registration for 2027 opens January 12 at 8 AM Mountain Time.

How hard is the Rut 50K?

Hard for its distance. It climbs 10,500 ft in 30.3 miles, over Headwaters ridge and Lone Peak's 11,166 ft summit, and the organizer warns that those sections are extremely steep and technical, with exposure and rockfall where a fall could kill you. If you're not ready for that, the organizer points you to the 21K, which stays off the ridges.

Can you have a crew at The Rut?

No, crewing isn't allowed on any course. Friends can still cheer at Swiftcurrent, the summit and Andesite with a scenic lift ticket, and 50K runners get a drop bag at Swiftcurrent.

What is the Rut Trifecta?

The VK on Friday, the 28K on Saturday and the 50K on Sunday: three times up Lone Peak, 84 km (52.5 miles) in all. It began in 2015, when runners started entering all three. Trifecta runners are also scored on their combined time, and finishers get their own award. In 2026 it cost $395 and was capped at 100 runners.

Is there cell service on the Rut courses?

On most of them, the organizer says, and it recommends carrying a phone with the ski patrol's number, which is printed on every bib. Download the course map before you go so it works wherever the signal drops.
