Tarawera Ultra-Trail course maps and aid stations

Five races through the lakes and forests around Rotorua, from a 14 km Sunday run to a 163 km loop under Mt Tarawera.

February 13 to 14, 2027 Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Tarawera is a UTMB World Series race in Rotorua, on New Zealand's North Island. Paul Charteris started it in 2009 as an 85 km run from Rotorua to Kawerau, his home town. In 2026, 4,339 of the 4,763 starters finished.

The TMiler starts at Te Puia in Rotorua before dawn and loops past eight lakes and under the peaks of Tarawera, Ruawahia and Wahanga. The T102 runs from Kawerau back to Rotorua. The T50 and the Sunday T14 also start at Te Puia, and the T21 at Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake). Every course finishes at the Village Green on the Rotorua lakefront.

The organizer's 2026 runner guide says phone coverage on the course "ranges from excellent to non-existent". Download the course map before race weekend. Your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Tarawera Ultra-Trail by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

You start at 4 AM on Saturday, and you have 36 hours. You pass eight lakes, cross the Tarawera Forest, take the Tarawera Falls track and run through the Buried Village. The forest is private land and closed to runners outside race day, so you can't train there. The 2027 course description still includes a boat ride across Lake Rotomahana. In 2026 it came at 46.6 km, covered 1.7 km and took about five minutes, and the race clock kept running.

The terrain is mostly single track and wide trail, with forestry and sealed roads. You have to wear your hi-vis vest on the road from the Blue and Green Lake carpark to Buried Village. The longest gaps between stations are Buried Village to Te Ariki Isthmus (15.5 km) and Okataina to Millar (15.2 km). Pacers can join from Okataina, and the finishers' gift is a pounamu pendant.

The T102 starts at Firmin Field in Kawerau and runs back to Rotorua beneath Tarawera, Ruawahia and Wahanga. It passes five lakes and takes in native bush on the Western Okataina track, then the redwoods and the steam beside the trail at Sulphur Point. The start goes off in waves between 7:00 and 7:20 AM, and the limit is 30 hours.

It's trail and forestry road through native bush, conifer forest, farmland and thermal ground. The longest gap between stations is Okataina to Millar, 15.1 km, at night if you're near the cutoffs. Crews can only meet you at Okataina, Tikitapu, Redwoods and the finish.

The T50 starts at Te Puia and runs past Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) and Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), then through the redwoods and along Lake Rotorua at Sulphur Point. Much of it is single track through native forest. Waves start from 7:00 AM and you have 14 hours.

The organizer pitches it at runners who have done a road marathon or a few halves, and the aid stations are stocked well enough that you don't need a crew. The longest stretch is Green Lake to Blue Lake, 13.8 km.

The T21 starts on the shore of Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) at 10 AM. You run the 5.5 km Blue Lake track first and pick up the aid station there at 6 km, then head back to Rotorua through the redwoods and past the steam at Sulphur Point. Tarawera Road closes from 9:45 AM to about 11 AM for the start.

The trails are non-technical, and the organizer says road shoes are fine in good weather. The minimum age is 16. No outside help is allowed, even at aid stations, but friends can cheer.

Registration

You enter online through UTMB. Entries for 2027 opened on April 16, 2026, two days after a priority window for runners with a UTMB Index, and all five races were still open when this page was checked. Fees are in New Zealand dollars, including GST, and go up once the allocation at each price runs out.

For the TMiler you have to upload an official result from a trail race of 50 km or more, finished between January 3, 2025 and January 3, 2027. Without one by the deadline you're moved to the T102. The T102 needs no qualifier.

If you withdraw, you get 45% back before November 22, 2026 and 22% before January 3, 2027, and nothing after that. You can transfer your entry to a friend until 5 PM on February 12, 2027, for a $55 fee.

Getting to Rotorua

Fly into Auckland, then take a 40 minute domestic flight to Rotorua. The airport is 9.5 km from town. Driving from Auckland takes about 3 hours, and from Wellington about five and a half.

Race buses leave the Village Green on Tutanekai Street for the TMiler, T50 and T21 starts ($10) and for the T102 start in Kawerau, about an hour's drive away ($20). The T14 bus ($10) leaves from the Novotel. You can also drive, but parking at the starts is limited. The Village Green has no event parking, so check the council's town parking.

Crewing and pacing

Only the TMiler, T102 and T50 allow support crews, and only at the aid stations open to spectators, or within 500 m of them. You can't drive to Okataina: Lake Okataina Road is closed to event traffic. Take the $20 return bus from the Rotoiti Rugby Club, which runs every 30 minutes from 9:30 AM Saturday to 5 AM Sunday. Puarenga is bus only for T50 crews, from the Waipa MTB carpark, while TMiler crews can park at Planet Bike and walk in.

Pacers are TMiler only and run free, but they have to register by February 10, 2027, be 18 or older, and carry the same mandatory gear. You can have two, one at a time, swapping at Okataina, Tikitapu or Redwoods. From Redwoods, friends can run the last 7 km with you if they register at the aid station and get a wristband.

Weather and what to carry

February is summer in Rotorua, with average highs around 23°C and lows around 13°C (1991 to 2020 normals), and about 100 mm of rain in the month. The organizer tells you to be ready for hot, cold, dry or wet weather. The TMiler's cutoffs run right through Saturday night.

TMiler runners carry the full list the whole way, including a thermal top and long thermal pants, a waterproof jacket, a beanie or buff, thermal gloves, a headlamp with spare power, a phone, an emergency survival bag, a hi-vis vest and a self-adhesive bandage. For the T102, T50 and T21 much of the list depends on the weather. The race is cupless, so bring a cup or soft flask for the aid stations. TMiler and T102 gear is checked before you get your race pack.

Tarawera FAQ

When is Tarawera 2027?

February 13 and 14, 2027. On Saturday the TMiler starts at 4 AM at Te Puia, the T102 at 7 AM in Kawerau, the T50 at 7 AM at Te Puia and the T21 at 10 AM at Blue Lake. The T14 starts at 7:30 AM on Sunday.

Is Tarawera a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finishing the 2027 TMiler in under 36 hours or the T102 in under 17 hours counts for the 2028 Western States lottery.

Do you need a qualifier to run the TMiler?

Yes: an official finish in a trail race of 50 km or more, between January 3, 2025 and January 3, 2027, uploaded to your registration by January 3, 2027. Runners without one are moved to the T102.

Can you have a pacer at Tarawera?

Only in the TMiler, from Okataina at 118.6 km to the finish. You can use two pacers, one at a time, and they can swap at Okataina, Tikitapu or Redwoods but not at Millar.

Is there cell service on the Tarawera course?

In places. The 2026 runner guide says coverage ranges from excellent to non-existent, and that a text can get through where a call fails. Download the course map in Goat Maps before race weekend: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.

How many Running Stones do you get at Tarawera?

4 for the TMiler, 3 for the T102, 2 for the T50 and 1 for the T21. The T14 page lists none.
