Gran Fondo Strade Bianche route maps

Two routes out of Siena on the white gravel roads of the pro race, 87 km or 137.7 km, finishing in Piazza del Campo.

March 7, 2027 Siena, Tuscany

The Gran Fondo Strade Bianche is the amateur ride on the sterrati, the white gravel roads south of Siena. It runs on the Sunday of the Strade Bianche weekend: in 2026 the pro men's and women's races started on the Saturday, and 8,500 riders entered the gran fondo the next day.

Both routes start at the Fortezza Medicea and finish in Piazza del Campo. The Gran Fondo is 137.7 km with 10 gravel sectors, and the Medio Fondo 87 km with 6. They share the first sectors, split at Radi and come back together at Vico d'Arbia for Colle Pinzuto and Le Tolfe, the last two.

The map shows the 2026 routes and refreshment points, from the organizer's GPX files and event guide. The organizer gives the same distances for 2027. Download it to see where you are on the route and how far it is to the next feed.

You leave Siena on asphalt and hit the first sector, Vidritta, about 20 km in. Bagnaia comes a few kilometers later, 5.8 km with a long climb that goes over 12% in places. Past Radi, the Piana and Serravalle sectors take you across the Via Cassia to Monteroni d'Arbia, partly on gravel the pros don't ride. San Martino in Grania is the longest sector at 9.5 km, rolling through the middle of the Crete Senesi before a steep climb with hairpins at the end.

Late in the ride come the short Guistrigona and Monteaperti sectors, then Colle Pinzuto (up to 15%) and Le Tolfe, which drops sharply and climbs back at up to 18%. From there it's just over 12 km to the Campo, with ramps of 16% on Via Santa Caterina about 500 m from the line. The 2026 feeds were at km 33, 75 and 112.

The Medio Fondo starts 90 minutes before the Gran Fondo and follows it over Vidritta and Bagnaia. At Radi it turns back toward Siena on its own gravel sector, then the Presciano sector, which has a ramp of about 12% halfway along. At Vico d'Arbia it joins the long route for Colle Pinzuto and Le Tolfe, then climbs through Porta di Fontebranda to Piazza del Campo.

The organizer says the route largely follows the women's elite race. In 2026 the feeds were at km 33 and km 55.

Getting an entry

Registration for 2027 opened on 7 September 2026, and all 8,500 places went in less than a day. In 2026 the fee was €119. You choose your route when you sign up, and the 2027 FAQ says you can't change it later. You can hand your entry to another rider until 9 February 2027 for a €20 fee; otherwise there are no refunds or deferrals.

With general entry gone, the organizer points you to its two official tour operators, Italy Bike Tours and Sportive Breaks, and to its charity program. The Rotary road safety campaign offers Gold entries at €300, starting from the first grid, and Silver at €250 from the second, until 30 November 2026 or until they run out.

Every rider needs a medical certificate for competitive cycling, uploaded to your registration by 12 February 2027. Riders from outside Italy also need a 2027 UCI licence, or a one-day FCI licence for €10. The Medio Fondo is open from age 17 and the Gran Fondo from 19.

Race weekend in Siena

Florence Airport is 81 km north of Siena. Collect your number at the Giardini La Lizza on Friday 5 March (10:00 to 19:00) or Saturday 6 March (8:30 to 18:00). There's no pickup on race day. Bring ID and your confirmation email; a friend can collect for you with a signed form and a copy of your ID. The village is at the Fortezza Medicea, and its screen shows the Saturday pro race live.

On Sunday the Medio Fondo gathers from 6:30 for a 7:30 start, and the Gran Fondo from 8:00 for 9:00. In 2026 there were five grids, set by your number. Afterwards there's a pasta party at La Lizza and showers at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Feeds, mechanics and time limits

Private support is banned, so plan to live off the refreshment points: three on the Gran Fondo and two on the Medio Fondo. In 2026 Shimano had mechanics at km 34, 46, 60, 80 and 115 on the long route, with motorbike mechanics on the road as well.

The Medio Fondo closes after 5 hours 30 minutes (13:00) and the Gran Fondo after 7 hours (16:00). If the end-of-race vehicle passes you, you can carry on but won't be ranked. A broom wagon picks up riders who stop, and their bikes go to the bike park at La Lizza.

Weather and kit

The organizer puts early March in Siena at 2° to 12° C, and an average March brings about 59 mm of rain. One rider quoted on the race site had cold and mud the first time and heat and dust the next, so pack for both.

You must carry a helmet, a bottle, two inner tubes, a pump and a repair kit. E-bikes, recumbents and handlebar extensions aren't allowed.

GF Strade Bianche FAQ

When is the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche 2027?

Sunday 7 March 2027, in Siena. The Medio Fondo starts at 7:30 and the Gran Fondo at 9:00, both from the Fortezza Medicea.

How long are the Strade Bianche gran fondo routes?

The Gran Fondo is 137.7 km with 2,000 m of climbing and 42.6 km of gravel. The Medio Fondo is 87 km with 1,350 m of climbing and 21.6 km of gravel.

Can I still enter the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche 2027?

General entry sold out in under 24 hours. The organizer points you to its official tour operators and its charity program instead; the Rotary charity entries close on 30 November 2026 or when they're gone.

Do foreign riders need a medical certificate?

Yes. Everyone needs a signed and stamped medical certificate for competitive cycling, valid on race day, plus a 2027 UCI licence or a one-day FCI licence (€10).

Is it the same course as the pro Strade Bianche?

Mostly. The organizer says it rides the same gravel roads as the pros, but Serravalle and the second part of Piana aren't in the pro race.

Can I switch from the Medio Fondo to the Gran Fondo during the ride?

No. You ride the route on your number, and once one route has passed the Radi junction the other is closed, with no feeds or support guaranteed.
