Squamish 50 course maps and aid stations

A 50 mile, a 50K and a 23K on the singletrack around Squamish, BC, over one weekend in August.

August 14 to 15, 2027 Squamish, British Columbia

The Squamish 50 was first run in 2012 in Squamish, 45 minutes north of Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway. Coast Mountain Trail Running, the company Gary Robbins and Geoff Langford founded, puts it on. The race hosted the 2023 Canadian Mountain and Trail Running Championships and the 2024 Canadian Trail Running Championship over 50K and 50 miles.

The 50 mile runs on Saturday, a loop that starts and finishes at Junction Park in downtown Squamish. On Sunday the 50K starts just outside Alice Lake Provincial Park and the 23K at Capilano University, and both finish at Junction Park. The 50/50 is its own entry for both the 50 mile and the 50K, ranked on your combined time. The 2027 dates are out, but the courses, distances and cutoffs on this page are the 2026 ones.

Each course strings together a long chain of named trails, and the organizer warns that the Lost Loop near the end is very easy to get lost in. The pink flagging marks the way on the day. With the course on your phone, you can check which trail you're on at any junction, even without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Squamish 50. Check the official site before you enter or race.

You start at 5:30 AM by headlamp, and the first 11 km through town are flat and fast. The climbing begins at Debeck's Hill, some of the steepest ground of the race, before you drop to Alice Lake. Next comes the Corners, where you run a 10 km loop on Cliff's Corners and Entrails and come back through the same aid station, with your drop bag there both times. The biggest climb of the day follows, Galactic Scheisse, which gains about 750 m over 4 km to top out just over 1,000 m; the organizer calls its views the best on the course. A long technical descent past Fred takes you down to Capilano University at 52 km and your second drop bag.

The organizer says the back half runs harder than the front. From Capilano you climb the Climb Trail, come down A.M. to Garibaldi Road, then share the 50K and 23K course to Far Side, the last climb up Mountain of Phlegm, the Smoke Bluffs and the flat run in to Junction Park. Leave Far Side after 6 PM and you must have a headlamp; about 30% of the field does. Pennylane Place, at 76.5 km, is a cutoff with no aid: 10:15 PM. Distances and cutoffs are from the 2026 chart.

The 50K starts at 6:15 AM in a clearing on Black Bear Road, just outside Alice Lake Provincial Park, and runs past Stump Lake and Fawn Lake to the Corners. From there it follows the 50 mile course: the long climb up Galactic Scheisse, the descent to Fred, Capilano University with your one drop bag, then the Climb Trail and A.M. to Garibaldi Road, Far Side and the finish at Junction Park.

The organizer put the flatter running in the first and last few kilometers, so there's little of it in between, and you descend 250 m more than you climb. You start near sunrise, so no headlamp is needed. Distances and cutoffs are from the 2026 chart.

The organizer is blunt that this shouldn't be your first trail race. You start at 8:00 AM at Capilano University, climb the Climb Trail with views back down the valley, and reach Garibaldi Road at 4.5 km. Then it's down Fool's Gold to Darwin's Bridge, along STP and Bonsai, and through Somewhere Over There, one of the most technical trails of the 23K, to Far Side at 12 km.

The last 11 km are the same as the 50 mile and 50K: the Lost Loop, Mountain of Phlegm, the Smoke Bluffs and the finish at Junction Park, where the cutoff is 5:45 PM. Distances and cutoffs are from the 2026 chart.

Getting an entry

Registration for 2027 opens on November 13, 2026 at 7:00 AM Pacific. Each distance has a cap, and once one fills there's no waitlist, no transfers and no race-day entry. $10 of every entry goes to SORCA for trail building.

Volunteers get early registration for the following year, and the athlete guide suggests racing one day and volunteering the other. You can't defer a Squamish 50 entry. Drop out by May 1 and you get half your fee back; after that, you get money back only through the optional refund insurance sold with your entry, or for a pregnancy.

Getting there and parking

Vancouver International is the closest airport, and the organizer puts the drive to Squamish at 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The Sea to Sky Highway jams heading north on Friday evening and heading south on Sunday evening, so arrive early if you can. Seattle is about 3 hours away outside rush hour. Without a car, Squamish Connector runs shuttles from Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver four times a day.

None of the starts or the finish has parking. Park at Brennan Park Rec Centre and take the race bus to your start, about 12 minutes away. The 50 mile buses leave at 4:20, 4:30 and 4:40 AM, the 50K buses at 5:10, 5:20 and 5:30 AM (included in your entry) and the 23K bus at 7:00 AM ($5). After the race a free shuttle runs from the finish back to Brennan Park.

Crewing

Pacers aren't allowed in any race. Crews can meet 50 mile runners at Capra, Alice Lake, Capilano University and Far Side, 50K runners at Capilano and Far Side, and 23K runners at Far Side. Every one is park and walk, so allow a few minutes on foot. If a crew turns up at a station that's closed to them (the Corners, Fred or Garibaldi Road), their runner can be disqualified.

Help your runner only within 30 m of the aid station, and bring everything yourself: crews can't touch the aid station's supplies. At Alice Lake the park gate opens at 7 AM, so don't drive up Alice Lake Road before then. The aid stations are cupless, so your runner needs a bottle or flask.

Weather and smoke

Squamish in August is usually warm. The 1991 to 2020 normals at Squamish Airport give an average high of 24.5°C (76°F) and a low of 12.2°C (54°F), with 54 mm of precipitation over about 8 days of the month. Some aid stations put out ice when it nears 30°C (85°F).

Wildfire smoke can change the race. The organizer follows BC's Air Quality Health Index for Squamish: at 6 or below the race runs as normal, at 7 and 8 it runs with extra measures such as masks, and at 9 or above it's cancelled. Sunrise is around 6:40 AM and sunset around 8:30 PM.

Squamish 50 FAQ

When is the Squamish 50 in 2027?

August 14 and 15, 2027. The 50 mile starts on Saturday, August 14 at 5:30 AM. The 50K (6:15 AM) and 23K (8:00 AM) are on Sunday, August 15. The courses and aid stations on this page are from 2026.

What is the Squamish 50/50?

The 50 mile on Saturday and the 50K on Sunday, about 130 km by the organizer's count, ranked on your combined time. It has its own entry: C$395, with 200 places. Finishers get a trucker hat whose colour changes with each 50/50 you finish, starting with blue.

Is the Squamish 50 a Western States qualifier?

No. The race's FAQ says Western States now takes only races of at least 100 km, and the longest race here is 50 miles.

Can you have a pacer or use poles at the Squamish 50?

Neither. Pacers and poles are banned in every race. Music is allowed only at low volume, ideally with one earbud, so you can hear mountain bikers and black bears.

Do I need a headlamp for the Squamish 50?

For the 50 mile, yes. Everyone starts with one of at least 100 lumens, and anyone leaving Far Side after 6 PM must carry one. You can drop yours in a labelled race bucket at Alice Lake and pick it up at Far Side. The 50K starts close to sunrise and needs none.

What is the Squamish 50 course record?

On the 50 mile, Karl Augsten ran 7:14:40 in 2023 and Courtney Dauwalter 8:22:15 in 2018. On the 50K, Alexandre Campbell ran 4:29:37 in 2026 and Jade Belzberg 5:08:59 in 2025.
