Speedgoat Mountain Races course maps and aid stations

Four races up and around the Snowbird ski area, from a 3.5 mile climb to the tram top to a 50K with more than 11,000 feet of gain.

July 22 to 24, 2027 Snowbird, Utah

Speedgoat is a UTMB World Series event at Snowbird, a ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah's Wasatch Mountains. Every race starts on the Snowbird Center Plaza Deck. The 30K and 10K run on Friday, July 23, 2027, and the 50K and The Summit on Saturday, July 24.

The organizer bills the 50K as "known to be the toughest 50K in the USA." Its loop climbs to Hidden Peak, drops to AF Canyon on the far side and comes back over Baldy. The map shows the 2026 courses: the organizer says the files may change for 2027.

The crew guide warns that cell and satellite coverage is limited up there, enough to hold up runner tracking by as much as two hours. Download the course map before race day. Your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Speedgoat Mountain Races by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

The 50K starts with a short downhill on a service road, then climbs to the first singletrack and up Chips Switchbacks, a steep half mile. Three more climbs and descents bring you to the summit of Snowbird at 11,000 feet and the Hidden Peak aid station. From there it's a 4 mile descent on rocky singletrack and ATV trail to Dutch Flat, the lowest point, and a 3 mile climb to Water Pipe, which has water only and isn't a place you can drop out.

From Mineral Basin you climb 2,000 feet in 1.8 miles to the summit of Baldy, then follow Baldy Ridge to the Tunnel aid station. The organizer says you go through the Snowbird tunnel and kiss the speedgoat at mile 24. A fast service road descent leads to the last climb, up the Cirque ridge to Hidden Peak again, and the final descent is almost all downhill.

The stops and cutoffs are from the 2026 aid station chart. Hidden Peak to AF Canyon is 5.7 miles with 3,589 feet of descent and only drinks at the end, so leave the summit with enough to drink.

The 30K runs the 50K's trails for the first 9.6 miles: Chips Switchbacks and the climbs to the summit of Snowbird and the Hidden Peak aid station, where the cutoff was 11:10 AM in 2026. From there you circle the summit, go through the tunnel and drop down a service road in Peruvian Gulch to the Amphitheatre turn. The last climb goes up Cirque Ridge to Hidden Peak a second time, and the run back to the Plaza Deck is mostly downhill.

Crews can meet you at both Hidden Peak visits. The stops are from the 2026 chart.

The 10K leaves Snowbird Plaza on singletrack across the face of the ski area, with a steep climb up Chips Switchbacks to give you a taste of the longer races. After the top of the Wilbere Chair, around mile 4.5, it's singletrack all the way back down to the Plaza Deck. There's one water stop, at mile 4.3 on the 2026 chart, and runners must be at least 12.

The Summit was new in 2026. It leaves the Plaza and climbs the mountain to finish at the Hidden Peak aid station, where you can stay for the Summit Party and cheer the 50K runners coming through. You ride the tram back down.

The 2026 course was changed in May 2026 to stay off the 50K route, and the map shows that version.

Registration

Entry is online through UTMB. The 2027 prices are $157 for the 50K, $135 for the 30K, $80.43 for the 10K and $50.15 for The Summit, plus processing fees, and the organizer says they can go up at any time. You must be 18 for the 50K and 30K.

Entries can't be refunded or transferred, but every paid entry can be deferred once to the next year, for any reason, until June 18, 2027. In 2026 online registration closed on the Sunday before the race, or sooner for a race that sold out, and the 2027 date isn't out yet. Once it closes, races with space left take entries in person at the Basecamp expo, and there's no race-day registration.

Getting to Snowbird

Snowbird is 29 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport, up Little Cottonwood Canyon. The start, finish and Basecamp expo are all at the Snowbird Center, and the organizer encourages runners to stay at the resort (the reservation office is 1-800-453-3000, option 2).

Parking is in the resort's lots along the road, and you can't park overnight or camp in any of them. Leave your dog at home: dogs aren't allowed anywhere in Little Cottonwood Canyon, which is part of Salt Lake City's watershed, and leaving one in a car brings a $750 fine.

Crewing and the tram

Crews can meet runners at Hidden Peak in the 50K and 30K, and at Tunnel in the 50K only. Crews ride the tram up to Hidden Peak, and Tunnel crews walk down to the station from the summit. In 2026 the tram ran for spectators after 7:30 AM on Friday and 6:30 AM on Saturday, every 15 to 20 minutes. The last free ride up was at 10:30 AM, and after 11 AM you need a paid ticket. Riding down is free at any time, and everyone on the tram signs a waiver.

There are no drop bags on any course, so carry what you need or hand it over at a crew stop. UTMB's North American rules allow only one crew member per runner, and pacers only in 100 mile races, so Speedgoat has none. Tracking on LiveTrail shows timing splits at some stations, not GPS positions.

Weather and what to carry

July at Alta, just up the canyon from Snowbird, averages a high of 72.9°F and a low of 50.3°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. The runner guide warns that conditions this time of year range from hot to snow on the summits. From the Plaza to Hidden Peak, The Summit climbs 3,023 feet.

In 2026 the 50K and 30K had to carry a phone, a collapsible cup, at least 1 liter of water, an 800 kcal food reserve, a whistle and a survival blanket. The 10K and The Summit needed the cup, half a liter of water and a phone. Race management can also make a hot or cold weather kit mandatory, sometimes only a few days out.

Speedgoat FAQ

When is Speedgoat 2027?

July 22 to 24, 2027, at Snowbird. The 30K starts at 7:30 AM and the 10K at 9 AM on Friday, July 23. The 50K starts at 6:30 AM and The Summit at 7 AM on Saturday, July 24.

How hard is the Speedgoat 50K?

The 2026 aid station chart gives 32.5 miles and 11,315 feet of climbing, with a 13 hour limit and cutoffs at Hidden Peak (10:10 AM), Mineral Basin (1:45 PM), Tunnel (3:20 PM) and Hidden Peak again (5:15 PM). The organizer calls it the toughest 50K in the USA.

Does Speedgoat qualify you for UTMB?

Finishing the 50K or 30K earns 2 Running Stones toward the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc lottery, which also needs a valid UTMB Index. The top 3 women and top 3 men in the 50K get a place at OCC, the 50K of the World Series Finals in Chamonix, and pay for that bib.

Can you have a pacer at Speedgoat?

No. UTMB's North American rules allow pacers only in 100 mile races. Crews can meet runners at Hidden Peak and, in the 50K, at Tunnel.

Is there cell service on the Speedgoat course?

Not much. The crew guide warns of limited cell and satellite connectivity and tracking delays of up to two hours. Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS works without a signal.

Can I bring my dog to Speedgoat?

No. Dogs aren't allowed anywhere in Little Cottonwood Canyon, to protect Salt Lake City's watershed, and the runner guide warns of a $750 fine for leaving one in a car.
