SBT GRVL course maps and aid stations

Four loops on Routt County gravel from Yampa Street in Steamboat Springs, from 25 miles to the 108 mile Black Course.

June 25 to 27, 2027 Steamboat Springs, Colorado

SBT GRVL is a gravel race and ride based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, first held in 2019. The 2027 weekend is June 25 to 27, and all four courses go off on Sunday June 27. Friday has the MTN CLMB uphill race at Steamboat Resort and Saturday the SBT TRL trail runs at Howelsen Hill.

Every course starts and finishes at Yampa and 10th Street downtown and loops out on county roads. All four climb Cow Creek, which the organizer calls Zipp Cow Creek, on the way out, and the three longer ones come home over it too. The organizer says the 2027 courses return to the 2026 routes, with the Green run in reverse.

The courses are marked, but the organizer warns that signs get moved or missed and tells you to load the course on your GPS anyway. Put the map on your phone before you leave town as a backup.

The Black is the only course closed to e-bikes, and the one the pros race. Elite men, elite women and amateurs start separately, and a rolling enclosure protects the front of the elite fields. Amateurs, and pros who drop out of it, ride by the rules of the road. The route climbs Zipp Cow Creek out of town, heads up toward Trout Creek and Wahooligan Pass, one of the highest points of the day, then drops toward Hayden for a partial lap of the 2025 course before coming home down Cow Creek.

The Hayden Gun Range aid station at mile 63 is the one place your team can hand you food; take outside help anywhere else and you're disqualified. The longest gaps are the first 25 miles, to the water on County Road 29, and the 21 miles from the Gun Range to the SRAM Oasis. If you aren't averaging 10 mph, you get sent onto a shorter course. The elite men start at 5:45 AM and the elite women at 5:50 AM; the amateur wave times weren't posted when this page was checked.

The Blue follows the Black over Cow Creek and up to Wahooligan Pass, then cuts back toward Steamboat instead of going on to Hayden. Some sections from earlier years run the other way this time. It has steep, loose stretches as well as the long climbs, and age group podiums are new for 2027.

Below an average of 8 mph you're redirected onto the Red. The first stop is the water on County Road 29, 25 miles out, so leave town with full bottles.

SBT GRVL Red Course

53 miles of gravel and rolling paved ranch roads, with Cow Creek out and back.

Distance
53 mi (85 km)
Climbing
4,198 ft (1,280 m)

The Red is about half gravel, the rest rolling paved hills through ranch country, and you ride the chunky Cow Creek section on the way out and again on the way back to the finish. There's a water stop at mile 24, the SRAM Oasis at mile 29 and Mt. Butter at mile 43. It has age group podiums like the Blue.

The Green starts on pavement on 20 Mile Road, climbs Zipp Cow Creek, descends on gravel, then climbs County Road 33 on pavement before dropping back into town. It runs the 2026 route in reverse. The climbs are long and reach past 7,000 feet, and there are no prizes or podiums.

It starts at 7:40 AM with the Red's second wave. The organizer lists one aid station but doesn't say where, so the map shows only the start and finish.

Getting an entry

Entry for 2027 is a random selection. It's open from 8:00 AM Mountain on October 14 to 11:59 PM on October 31, 2026, and you hear back on November 5. You enter your card, but you're only charged if you're picked. Pick one course: entering more than one gets you thrown out of the draw. Up to four riders can enter as a group, and the group is picked or not picked together, which doesn't change your odds. Pros go into the same draw, and only past Black Course champions get a guaranteed place. There is no registration after the window closes.

The 2027 fees are $295 for the Black, $275 for the Blue or Red and $200 for the Green. Juniors pay half and tandems double. Entries can't be refunded or transferred. You can change course or defer to 2028 until May 22, 2027, and a deferral means paying the 2028 fee.

In 2026 the event had 2,750 riders, its permit cap, and sold out within days.

Getting to Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is a 157 mile drive west of Denver, about three hours over Rabbit Ears Pass. Salt Lake City is about five hours away and Grand Junction about three. Yampa Valley Regional Airport at Hayden, 22 miles from town, has daily nonstop flights from Denver and Houston. Storm Mountain Express and GO Alpine run shuttles.

Pick up your packet yourself, with photo ID, at the registration tent in the Wahooligan Lot downtown: Friday June 25 from noon to 5:30 PM or Saturday June 26 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There's no pickup on race day.

Aid and support on course

The roads stay open to traffic. Unless you're inside the pros' rolling enclosure, you stop at stop signs and ride no more than two abreast. Aid stations are neutral and stock Maurten products with sweet and savory food. If you have particular needs, bring your own. Mechanics work at the aid stations and roam the course, but the organizer says a wait can run an hour or more, so carry what you need to fix a flat.

Outside support is allowed only at the Hayden Gun Range, and only on the Black. Aerobars aren't allowed on any course. E-bikes are fine on the other courses, but there are no spare batteries or charging out there.

Weather and what to bring

Steamboat sits at about 6,900 feet. June there averages a high of 75.9°F and a low of 39.2°F, with 1.58 inches of rain over the month, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, so dress for a cold start. Wahooligan Pass, one of the highest points on the Black and Blue, is around 8,150 feet.

The organizer asks every rider to carry a rain jacket and the tools to fix a flat.

On the Blue, Red and Green courses, but not the Black. You're responsible for your battery: there are no spares on course.
