Run Rabbit Run 100 and 50 mile maps and aid stations

A 100 miler and a 50 miler from the base of the Steamboat ski area, into the Park Range and up to the Continental Divide.

September 17 to 18, 2027 Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Run Rabbit Run is a charity race in Steamboat Springs that started as a 50 miler in 2007 and added the 100 in 2012. The 100 splits into two divisions on the same course: Tortoises, who start Friday at 9 AM with 36 hours, and Hares, who start at 1 PM, run for the prize money and have 30 hours.

Both races start and finish at the base of the ski area and climb straight up to the top of Mount Werner. The 100 then drops down Fish Creek Falls and climbs back, crosses Buffalo Pass, comes through town to Olympian Hall for a night loop on Emerald Mountain, and returns over the Continental Divide. The 50 goes out along the Wyoming Trail to Rabbit Ears Peak and back.

The stops and cutoffs here are from the 2026 runner's manual; the 2027 charts aren't out yet. The race says much of the course is remote and that live tracking can drop out there. Download the map before you go, so your phone's GPS can show where you are without a signal.

The race gives about 101.8 miles and 20,391 feet of climbing, mostly on trail with about 4 miles of pavement. You climb the ski area to Mount Werner, follow the Mountain View Trail, then drop down the steep, rocky Fish Creek Falls Trail to the trailhead and climb straight back up it, one of the few stretches where you'll meet runners coming the other way. From Mount Werner to Fish Creek Falls is 12.3 miles, and the manual warns you may find no water in that stretch until you can filter from the creek.

Dirt roads take you to Summit Lake, then the Flash of Gold trail descends through aspens to Dry Lake and the Spring Creek Trail runs into town. The loop on Emerald Mountain passes the minimal Lane of Pain station twice, mostly in the dark. Back up Spring Creek, you climb the Grouse Trail to Buffalo Pass Road and Summit Lake, then follow the Wyoming Trail, the Continental Divide Trail here, past the 10,557 foot high point to Long Lake, Mount Werner and the finish.

The stops and cutoffs shown are the 2026 chart's.

The 50 starts in the dark at 6 AM and climbs close to 4,000 feet in its first 6 miles to the top of the ski area. From Mount Werner you take the Mountain View Trail to Long Lake, then the Wyoming Trail south through meadows and spruce and fir past Lake Elmo and Fishhook Lake to Base Camp and Dumont Lake. A rough jeep road climbs to the Rabbit Ears, where a volunteer at the top hands you a card. You turn around there and come home the same way, and you have to give the card back at Dumont to count as a finisher.

Dumont is the only place crews can see you, and Base Camp is the only drop bag between the start and the finish. The stops and cutoffs shown are the 2026 chart's.

Registration

Entry for 2027 opens on Sunday, December 6, 2026 at 7 AM Mountain Time, with the 100 capped at 450 runners and the 50 at 200, and there's no qualifying run. In 2026 entry was online through UltraSignup, and both races filled and ran waitlists. The organizer says it usually goes deep into the list, though you may not hear until summer.

In 2026 the 100 cost $385 before January 1, then $495 and finally $595, and the 50 cost $250, $325 and $375, plus fees. There are no refunds, deferrals or transfers. If you withdraw before the deadline and someone takes your place from the waitlist, you get a credit toward the next year: $150 for the 100, $100 for the 50 in 2026.

Until entries close in September you can switch between Tortoise and Hare.

Getting to Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is a 157 mile drive from Denver over Rabbit Ears Pass. The nearest airline service is Yampa Valley Airport (HDN), 25 miles west near Hayden, with flights from Denver.

Both races start at the base of the ski area near Slopeside. There's parking in the Gondola Square garage, and the closest free parking is the Upper Knolls lot about a quarter mile away. Check-in, the pre-race briefings and drop bags are at Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill, about 15 minutes' drive across town, and there's no race day check-in.

Crewing and pacing

On the 100, crews can meet runners at the start, Summit Lake, Dry Lake and Olympian Hall. Fish Creek Falls is 4 miles from Olympian Hall and crews can get there only on foot or by bike: if they drive there, their runner can be disqualified. Dry Lake, about 45 minutes from the ski area, has no crew parking, so drop off a pacer and leave. Crews can't drive up Buffalo Pass Road above Dry Lake, so the drive to Summit Lake goes the long way, about two hours by Highway 14 and Buffalo Pass. On the 50, Dumont is the only crew stop, about 45 minutes up Rabbit Ears Pass.

Tortoises can have a pacer from Dry Lake on the way into town, and Tortoises over 60 for men or over 50 for women can have one the whole way. Hares only get company between the Spring Creek Trailhead and Olympian Hall, both ways, and from the top of the gondola to the finish, the last 4 miles or so, where everyone can bring friends along. Their crews can help them only at designated crew stations, at the top of the gondola and through town.

Weather and what to carry

The manual gives an average high of 71°F and low of 42°F in town in mid September, and it's much colder up high, where it can drop below freezing at night. About half the 100 is close to or above 10,000 feet, and the race says more of its runners drop because of cold at night than for any other reason. In 2025 the race ran through a blizzard, and in 2026 it rained and hailed through the night.

Since 2026 you can't leave Olympian Hall without a light and a backup, a warm jacket, a space blanket, a rain jacket and gloves. It's hunting season, so wear bright colors. Runners see moose, black bears, mountain lions and elk every year.

Run Rabbit Run FAQ

When is Run Rabbit Run 2027?

The 100 starts on Friday, September 17, 2027, Tortoises at 9 AM and Hares at 1 PM. The race's home page puts the 50 on Saturday, September 18, though the year beside it still reads 2026, so check before you book. In 2026 the 50 started at 6 AM on the Saturday.

What's the difference between a Hare and a Tortoise?

Hares run for the prize money. They start four hours after the Tortoises and have to finish in 30 hours, under tighter rules on pacers and crew help. Tortoises get 36 hours and pacers, and run for Tortoise awards, never prize money however fast they go.

How much prize money does Run Rabbit Run pay?

For 2027 and 2028 the race offers a $300,000 purse, with $100,000 to the first woman and the first man in the 100 Hare division. The 50 pays no prize money.

Is Run Rabbit Run a Western States qualifier?

Yes, the 100 is on Western States' list of qualifiers, and the September 2027 race counts for the 2028 lottery. Western States lists a 38 hour standard, but the runner's manual says you need to finish in under 36 hours, whatever your start time, for it to count.

Can you have a pacer at Run Rabbit Run?

In the 100, Tortoises can pick one up at Dry Lake on the way into town, and older Tortoises can have one the whole way. Hares can have one only through town, between the Spring Creek Trailhead and Olympian Hall, and from the top of the gondola to the finish. In the 50, only the stretch from the top of the gondola to the finish.

Can you track runners at Run Rabbit Run?

In 2026 the race had live tracking by bib number and a livestream of the 100, but it warns that much of the course is remote and the tracking may not keep up. Download the map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS works without a signal.
