Rocky Raccoon 100 map and aid stations

A 20 mile lap of the pine woods around Lake Raven, run five times for the 100 miler and three times, after a short opening lap, for the 100K.

February 6 to 7, 2027 Huntsville State Park, Texas

Rocky Raccoon is Tejas Trails' February 100 miler in Huntsville State Park, north of Houston. Both distances run the same 20 mile loop around Lake Raven, through tall East Texas pines, with wooden bridges and a bed of pine needles underfoot. There are no rocks to speak of, despite the name, but plenty of roots.

The race hub is at Raven Lodge on the lakeshore. Each lap passes four aid stations: Tyler's Last Resort at the start and finish, then Gate, Nature Center and Dam Nation. The organizer calls the cutoffs generous, and the course is marked well enough that you shouldn't need a map to follow it.

Your crew will want one, though. Parking near the aid stations is scarce, and the organizer suggests crews get around on foot or by mountain bike. Download the map to see where each aid station sits in the park, with the trails and roads between them. It pins the aid stations but doesn't draw the course.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Rocky Raccoon 100, by USWE. Check the official site before you enter or race.

Five full laps, each passing Gate at mile 3.8, Nature Center at 9.1 and Dam Nation at 14.1 before coming back to Tyler's at mile 20. The longest stretch without aid is the last one, 5.9 miles from Dam Nation back to the start. Expect roughly 1,250 feet of climbing a lap, on gently rolling trail.

The mass start is at 6 AM Saturday, and the start line stays open until 6:30 AM if you'd rather skip the crowd (your official time still runs from the gun). The chart lists no cutoffs until Sunday morning: you have to be out on your fifth lap by 7:36 AM, and the course closes at 2 PM. The schedule on the race page gives 7:41 AM for that last-lap cutoff, so plan on the earlier time.

The 100K starts at 7 AM Saturday with a short lap of about 2 miles that brings you back past Tyler's, then three full 20 mile laps through Gate, Nature Center and Dam Nation. The whole thing comes to 62.1 miles on the aid station chart.

The time limit is 31 hours, with the same Sunday cutoffs as the 100 miler: out on your last lap by 7:36 AM (7:41 on the race page) and finished by 2 PM. Pacers can join you from Nature Center on your third full lap, after mile 49.

Registration and the waitlist

Entry is on RunSignup, and the race has a cap because the park only holds so many people. For 2027 both the 100 mile and the 100K are full, and each has its own waitlist, first in, first out. When a place opens you get an email and have 24 hours to take it. In past years more than 165 runners were on the waitlist and all of them were invited before race day.

Until January 5, 2027, entry costs $309 for the 100 mile and $290 for the 100K, plus a processing fee; after that the price goes up. Entry covers your park day-use fee for Saturday and Sunday.

Getting there and parking

Huntsville is about 70 miles north of Houston. The park is off I-45 at exit 109, along Park Road 40. Show your registration email at the park headquarters on the way in. Anyone who isn't racing pays $7 a day, in cash.

Everything happens around Raven Lodge, across from the park's main boat ramp. Parking is very limited, and cars on the grass or the roadside get ticketed or towed. There's a runner drop-off near the start, so the easy option is to be dropped off and let your driver find a space. Friday and Saturday night campsites in the park are booked through the race, not the usual state park system.

Crewing, drop bags and pacers

Crews are allowed at all four aid stations, and every one serves full aid, hot and cold. Parking is scarce, so the organizer tells crews to bring a mountain bike or good shoes to get between them. Gate and Dam Nation sit right next to each other, a short walk from the Coloneh Campground trailhead. Crews can also set up along the chute near the start and finish line, but generators aren't allowed at the hub.

The race delivers drop bags to Gate and Dam Nation if you leave them in the Raven Lodge front yard between 3 and 7 PM Friday, one bag for each. You can also take your own bags to any aid station on Friday. Bring your own cup or bottle, since the aid stations don't hand out cups for cold drinks.

Pacers can join after mile 49, at Nature Center at the earliest, one at a time, and they must register (it's free). Runners 60 and older can have a pacer the whole way. Pacers can't carry anything for you.

February weather

Huntsville averages a high of 62°F (17°C) and a low of 43°F (6°C) in February, with about 3.4 inches of rain over the month. A 30 hour race takes in a full night, so plan on mild afternoons and cold hours before dawn. The organizer's line is "Rain or shine or both!", and the race goes ahead either way.

Rocky Raccoon FAQ

When is Rocky Raccoon 2027?

Saturday, February 6, 2027. The 100 mile starts at 6 AM, the 100K at 7 AM, and the course closes at 2 PM on Sunday, February 7.

Is Rocky Raccoon a Western States qualifier?

Yes, the 100 mile is, if you finish in under 30 hours. Western States lists the February 2027 race as a qualifier for its 2028 lottery. The 100K isn't on its list.

How many laps is the Rocky Raccoon 100?

Five laps of 20 miles. The 100K is a short opening lap of about 2 miles and then three full laps.

Can you have a pacer at Rocky Raccoon?

Yes, in both distances, from mile 49 on, so the earliest place to pick one up is Nature Center. Runners 60 and older can have a pacer for the whole race. Every pacer has to fill in the free pacer registration.

Is the Rocky Raccoon course hard to follow?

No. The organizer marks it with orange caution tape across open junctions, yellow arrows and hundreds of confidence markers, all with reflectors for the night. Where a shorter distance turns off, signs show which way each distance goes. Don't follow the runner in front of you blindly.

Is Rocky Raccoon sold out?

Yes, both the 100 mile and the 100K were full for 2027 when we checked in October 2026. Each distance has a waitlist on RunSignup, and in past years everyone on it was invited to register before race day.
