Penyagolosa Trails CSP and MiM course maps

Two point-to-point races from the university track in Castelló up into the mountains to the sanctuary of Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, at 1,280 m.

April 24, 2027 Castelló, Valencian Community

Penyagolosa Trails is two races that start on the same April day from the athletics track at Universitat Jaume I in Castelló. Both finish at Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, in the Penyagolosa Natural Park. The MiM (Marató i Mitja) is 60 km and was first run in 1999. The CSP (Castelló-Penyagolosa) is 106 km and takes a longer line north through Atzeneta, Culla and Vistabella before it comes back to the same finish.

The 2027 edition is on Saturday, April 24. The organizer hasn't published the 2027 courses, so the map shows the 2026 courses, aid stations and cutoffs.

The regulations say Sant Joan has no phone coverage, only a tent where the organizer runs Wi-Fi over a satellite link for basic needs. If you're waiting up there for a runner, or running yourself, save the course map to your phone first. GPS works with no signal, so the map can still show you where you are on the course.

In 2026 the CSP started at midnight and ran the first 31 km with the MiM, through Borriol to Les Useres. From there it went north to Atzeneta, Benafigos and Culla, then turned west past the hermitage of Sant Bertomeu to Vistabella and dropped to Xodos. The last stretch climbed from Xodos past Collao to about 1,490 m at Banyadera, then down to Sant Joan. The organizer gives 4,400 m of descent against the 5,600 m of climbing.

The longest gap comes early: 14.5 km and 727 m up from Borriol to Bassa, all of it in the dark on a midnight start. In 2026 Benafigos had drinks only, so plan on about 20 km between full aid stations from Atzeneta to Culla. Culla and Vistabella served a hot meal, and Culla is where your second life bag waits. There was one more drinks point at Banyadera, about 3 km from the finish.

The 2026 MiM started at 6:00, six hours after the CSP, on the same course as far as Les Useres. It then split off west by Torrosselles to Xodos, the only crew point after Les Useres, and climbed to Banyadera at about 1,490 m before the short descent to Sant Joan.

Borriol to Bassa is the longest stretch without aid, 14.4 km with 719 m of climbing. The climb from Xodos to Banyadera is 6.7 km and 583 m up, and Banyadera had drinks only.

Getting a place

For 2026, pre-registration ran from November 20 to December 8, 2025. There's a draw only when pre-registrations top the places by more than 20%. The MiM's 4,081 went into a lottery for 1,500 places, drawn on December 12 at the Castelló Provincial Council, while the CSP's 692 all got in. You can enter only one of the two draws. Some runners skip the lottery: for the MiM, those with 13 finishes across the MiM and CSP, and for the CSP, those with 6 CSP finishes; fast finishers from the last two editions; past podium finishers; and a limited number of men with an ITRA-UTMB index of at least 775 and women with at least 625. There's no waiting list, and the organizer says it oversells to cover the people who drop out.

The CSP also needs a medical report clearing you for ultra-endurance sport, dated within a year of the race and uploaded before March 1, or your entry is cancelled. The 2027 lottery dates weren't announced when this page was checked.

Getting to Castelló

The organizer's travel page puts Castelló 40 to 45 minutes from Valencia by AVE or Euromed train, or 55 minutes by car. Castellón airport is about 30 minutes from the city by bus. From Barcelona it's about 2 hours 40 minutes by car on the AP-7.

In 2026 bibs were handed out at the ExpoTrail on the Friday, 11:00 to 21:00, never at the start. The regulations ask you to reach the start an hour early, since access closes 15 minutes before the gun.

Crews, life bags and buses

Crews may help you only at Borriol, Les Useres and Xodos on the MiM, and at Borriol, Les Useres, Atzeneta, Culla, Vistabella and Xodos on the CSP, within 100 m of the marked areas. Nobody who isn't entered may run with you.

You can hand in a 20 liter life bag, two on the CSP, which goes to the finish; the CSP's second one goes to Culla. If you drop, the buses from Les Useres, Atzeneta and Vistabella take you to the finish, with a shuttle from Torrosselles and Culla to Atzeneta. On the CSP's first night, the buses from Les Useres (6:30) and Atzeneta (7:00) go back to the start instead.

Cars can't drive to Sant Joan: they're stopped 8 km out, where there's parking and a free shuttle. There's no food for sale at the finish, so supporters bring their own. The runners' bus back to the start leaves from 15:00, about once an hour.

Weather and kit

April in Castelló averages a high of 21.0°C and a low of 11.0°C (1991 to 2020 normals). The finish is at 1,280 m, and the organizer says the mountain has a harsh continental climate. In 2026 the trouble was heat: the organizer's race report talks of an unexpectedly hot race day.

The 2026 regulations list the mandatory kit, and the CSP's list is longer, with a headlamp and red rear light for the night. Kit can be checked at the start or anywhere on the course, and refusing a check gets you disqualified. The regulations also ask you to carry your own cup for drinks at the aid stations.

Penyagolosa FAQ

When is Penyagolosa Trails 2027?

Saturday, April 24, 2027, the 28th MiM and the 15th CSP. It falls exactly 28 years after the first MiM, in 1999. In 2026 the CSP started at midnight and the MiM at 6:00.

Is the CSP a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Western States lists the April 2027 CSP as a qualifier for its 2028 lottery, with a 26 hour standard. The CSP's limit in 2026 was 25 hours 30 minutes, so a finish inside that limit would be fast enough.

Can you have a pacer at Penyagolosa Trails?

No. The rules forbid running any part of the course with someone who isn't entered, and crews can help only at the named aid stations.

Is there phone signal at the Penyagolosa finish?

The regulations say there's no phone coverage at Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, and the organizer runs a satellite Wi-Fi network in a tent there. In an emergency on the course, call the number on your bib, or 112 if you can't get through.

How do you get back from Sant Joan de Penyagolosa?

A free runners' bus goes back to the start in Castelló from 15:00, about every hour. If your supporters came up on the shuttle from the car park 8 km away, you can ride back down with them.

What is the difference between the CSP and the MiM?

The MiM is 60 km with 3,300 m of climbing and a 15 hour limit. The CSP is 106 km with 5,600 m and a 25 hour 30 minute limit, and in 2026 it started six hours earlier. Both share the first 31 km and the finish.
