Patagonian International Marathon courses and aid stations

Five point-to-point races on the gravel and asphalt roads southwest of Torres del Paine, all finishing at Hotel del Paine.

September 4 to 5, 2027 Torres del Paine, Magallanes, Chile

The Patagonian International Marathon was the first marathon run in Torres del Paine National Park, in 2012, and it has come back every September since, apart from 2020. Runners from more than 65 countries have taken part. The 15th edition is on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September 2027: the 42K, 21K and 10K on Saturday, the 30K and 15K on Sunday.

The marathon starts on Ruta Y-200 at the turn for Lago Maravilla, joins Ruta Y-290 and follows it northwest past Lago del Toro to the Serrano sector and the finish at Hotel del Paine. The shorter races start further along the same road and run one way to the same finish. The race runs outside the national park, so you don't need a park ticket.

The distances, climbing and time limits are from the organizer's 2027 table, which it calls preliminary and subject to change. The aid stations on the map and their kilometers are from the 2026 profiles, the latest the organizer has published. Its rules warn that you won't have a steady mobile connection during the event, so download the map before you leave Puerto Natales. GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The marathon is the only course that starts on Ruta Y-200. It follows that road for about nine kilometers to the junction with Ruta Y-290, then turns northwest. The first 19 km are close to flat. The road rises into Cipreses and rolls from there, and between Lago Toro and Cuernos del Paine it makes the day's one real climb, to the course high point at 257 m, before a long run down. It's 74% gravel, with 687 m of climbing and 718 m of descent.

You have 7 hours. The organizer's FAQ sets a cutoff of 13:00 at Cipreses, about kilometer 20.5, and 16:30 at the finish. The aid stations, at their 2026 positions, are about 5 km apart. The longest gap is the first one, 9.4 km from the start to Cerro Tenerife.

Registration

The 2026 race sold out. Registration for 2027 is open on the organizer's site. Prices rise in three steps: super pre-sale from 22 June to 15 September 2026, pre-sale from 15 September to 16 October, and the normal price from 17 October to 17 May 2027. Each period can also close early if its places run out. For runners from outside Chile, the normal price is USD 382 for the 42K, 348 for the 30K, 332 for the 21K, 282 for the 15K and 265 for the 10K, plus the payment platform's fee. Residents of the Magallanes Region get 25% off the normal price.

At least a month before the race you email a medical certificate for your distance and the signed waiver. You can transfer an entry to another runner, or move it to the next edition.

Getting there

Fly into Santiago, then on to Punta Arenas. From there it's 250 km of paved road to Puerto Natales, about three hours by bus, with departures through the day. Puerto Natales also has an airport, but direct flights from Santiago are seasonal.

Puerto Natales is the race's base. You collect your kit at the Gimnasio Club Natales, Hermann Eberhard 332, on 2 or 3 September. The official buses leave from the Plaza de Armas on race morning and bring you back from the finish, and you buy the ticket ahead of time, when you register or later through your registration. Your companions can ride too.

Private cars aren't allowed at the starts. If you drive, go straight to the finish and take the race's bus to your start, and anyone dropping you off has to go on to the finish. If you're staying in or near the park, ask your lodging about getting to the start, since the race's buses only run from Puerto Natales.

Weather and kit

September is the end of winter here, with spring on the way. The organizer expects 2 to 10°C, and up to 15°C at most, and warns that the weather is unpredictable in every season and a storm can still blow in. Puerto Natales keeps UTC−3 all year, with no clock change.

You must carry your race number, timing chip and your own cup, bottle or hydration pack, since there are no plastic cups at the aid stations. The organizer recommends a waterproof windbreaker, a beanie, gloves, a base layer, full-length tights and sunglasses. Bring more layers than you need: you can leave a small bag at your start and pick it up at the finish. Poles are allowed only if you carry them from start to finish.

Patagonian International Marathon FAQ

When is the Patagonian International Marathon 2027?

Saturday 4 September 2027 for the 42K, 21K and 10K, and Sunday 5 September for the 30K and 15K. The marathon and 10K start at 09:30 and the 21K at 10:30; both Sunday races start at 09:30.

Is the Patagonian International Marathon inside Torres del Paine National Park?

Not now. The courses run on the roads southwest of the park, outside it, so you don't need a park ticket. Earlier editions ran inside the park. If you want to visit the park while you're there, you pay the entrance fee like any visitor.

Is the Patagonian International Marathon a trail race?

No. It runs on winding vehicle roads, gravel and asphalt, where the slope keeps changing. The 42K is 74% gravel, the 10K and 15K mostly asphalt.

What are the cutoffs for the marathon?

You have 7 hours. The FAQ sets a cutoff at Cipreses, about kilometer 20.5, at 13:00, and the finish closes at 16:30. It also names a second cutoff point at about kilometer 31 but gives no time for it. Missing an intermediate cutoff means you are taken off the course.

Can someone run with me?

Not unless they are entered. Running with an unregistered companion gets you disqualified. Friends and family can buy seats on the official buses when you buy yours.

Is there cell service on the course?

Don't count on it. The rules tell runners to warn family that they won't have a steady internet or mobile connection during the event. Download the map in Goat Maps before race day: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.
