Oman by UTMB course maps and aid stations

Five races in the Hajar Mountains, all finishing at the oasis village of Birkat Al Mouz, from 21.5 km out of the village to 154 km across Jabal Akhdar.

December 10 to 12, 2026 Hajar Mountains, Oman

Oman by UTMB is the UTMB World Series event in Oman's Hajar Mountains, on 10 to 12 December 2026. The Hajar Ultra (154 km) and the Jabal Classic (103 km) start in the old mountain town of Al Hamra and climb past Misfat Al Abriyeen onto the Jabal Akhdar plateau, where most of their stations sit near 2,000 m. The Skyward Canyon 50K starts at Imti, near Izki, the Old Capital Trail starts outside Nizwa Fort, and the Scenic Ascent loops out of Birkat Al Mouz. Every course finishes at the race village in Birkat Al Mouz.

The event's results page goes back to an Oman by UTMB in 2018 and 2019, then lists the Himam Trail Run from 2023 to 2025.

The long courses run through the night, down wadis and along exposed ridges, and the race rules tell you to turn back if you can't see a way marker. Download the map before you leave the hotel: it shows where you are from GPS alone, with or without a signal.

You start in Al Hamra at 3:30 on Thursday afternoon, so the big climb from Misfat Al Abriyeen to Sharaf Al Huwaib (2,151 m) comes in the evening: the time chart has even the leaders there around 6:50 PM. The profile tops out near 2,400 m around km 33. From there it's 12.8 km to Sharaf Al Alamain, the longest gap on the course and your first spare bag.

The middle of the race wanders the Jabal Akhdar plateau, past Qiyut (at 2,258 m the highest station) and out to Cliff View. Around km 87 there's a via ferrata that takes 10 to 15 minutes; a guiding partner hands out harnesses and helmets and talks you across. Hail Al Diyar, just after it, has your second bag, a rest area and showers. The third bag waits at Saiq (km 124.2), and then the course drops off the plateau, from Sallut at 1,584 m to Al Muaydin at 699 m, and the last 8.6 km down to Birkat Al Mouz.

The Jabal Classic starts in Al Hamra at 7:00 on Thursday morning, eight and a half hours before the 100M. It skips seven of the 100M's stations (Dofia, Hail Al Shas, Sharaf Al Huwaib, Cliff View, Hail Al Hadeb, Al Muhaibes and Al Aqr) and goes from Misfat Al Abriyeen past Hail Al Juwari to Sharaf Al Alamain, where the first cutoff is 2:00 PM at km 23.6.

Hail Al Diyar at km 45 has the only spare bag, plus a rest area and showers, with a cutoff of 8:30 PM. The second half follows the 100M across Safi Sahra, Wadi Bani Habib and Saiq, then down the same long descent through Sallut and Masirat Rawajih to the finish. You have until 1:00 PM on Friday.

The first 4.6 km to Wadi Entrance are nearly flat. Then the climb starts: about 1,170 m in the 6.4 km to Al Rufaisa Mosque, and on to Road Cross at 2,061 m, where you need to be by 12:15 PM.

After that you stay high on the plateau, between about 1,800 and 2,000 m, through Al Aqr to Saiq, the one station where crews can meet you. The last 23 km are mostly downhill, through Sallut and Masirat Rawajih, so save some legs for it.

Registration

Entry is through UTMB, with no lottery. Runners with a valid UTMB Index got a 48-hour priority window from 9 February 2026; general entry opened on 11 February and stays open until each race fills. There's no waiting list and registration doesn't reopen. On 13 October the race pages showed the 50K and 20K as full, and the 100M, 100K and 30K still open.

Fees come in four price tiers. The registration page lists about €281 for the 100M, €222 for the 100K, €156 for the 50K, €101.75 for the 30K and €74 for the 20K, plus an 8% administration fee. Without cancellation insurance there are no refunds. You can't hand your place to someone else or defer it to another year, but you can move down to a shorter race up to four weeks before. You need to be 18 to run, or 16 for the 20K.

Bibs are collected in person, 10:00 to 22:00: in Muscat on 5 and 6 December, or at the race village in Birkat Al Mouz from 8 to 10 December. The village also opens on 11 December for the 30K and 20K. Bring your mandatory kit, because it's checked there.

Getting there

Fly into Muscat International Airport. Birkat Al Mouz is about an hour and a half away by road, and 25 minutes from Nizwa. There's parking near the race village, and the organizer runs shuttles from there to the starts in Al Hamra, Imti and Nizwa. Schedules come out closer to race week.

If you plan to drive up to Saiq or the other stations on Jabal Akhdar, you'll need a 4x4. A checkpoint on the road turns other cars back and asks for your registration, rental agreement and ID. Electric cars are allowed through. Make sure your rental contract allows mountain driving.

Crewing and drop bags

Only the 100M, 100K and 50K allow a crew, and only one person per runner, at the stations marked for crews: Al Hamra, Misfat Al Abriyeen, Sharaf Al Alamain, Hail Al Diyar, Safi Sahra and Saiq on the 100M. Your crew can hand you a bag of up to 30 liters and help with small things like a massage or a blister while you sit, but they can't give you medical care. Nobody can run with you outside the spectator zones by the aid stations; that's a 15-minute penalty.

Spare bags go in the UTMB World Series bag you get at bib collection. The 100M has them at Sharaf Al Alamain, Hail Al Diyar and Saiq, the 100K at Hail Al Diyar. Poles can't go in them: start with your poles or go without.

Weather and kit

December is the cool season, but the courses run from about 500 m to nearly 2,400 m. Down in Nizwa the December average is about 28°C by day and 14°C at night. The organizer expects 5 to 15°C by day on the mountain, near 0°C at night, and below freezing in exposed spots.

The 100M kit list covers both: 2 liters of water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap that covers your neck, but also a waterproof hooded jacket, a warm second layer, long leggings, waterproof overpants, two headlamps and a survival blanket. Aid stations hand out no disposable cups or bowls, so the list includes your own cup and a reusable bowl. Check your own race's list on its page. Shorts and tops shouldn't be very short or revealing; the organizer asks runners to respect local dress.

Oman by UTMB FAQ

When is Oman by UTMB 2026?

10 to 12 December 2026. The 100K starts in Al Hamra at 7:00 on Thursday 10 December and the 100M at 15:30 the same day. The 50K starts at Imti at 7:00 on Friday. On Saturday the 30K starts in Nizwa at 7:00 and the 20K in Birkat Al Mouz at 8:00.

Is there a lottery for Oman by UTMB?

No. It's first come, first served until a race is full, and UTMB Index holders had a 48-hour head start in February. There's no waiting list. On 13 October 2026 the 50K and 20K were full.

Does Oman by UTMB qualify you for the UTMB World Series Finals?

Finishing earns Running Stones for the Finals lottery: 4 for the 100M, 3 for the 100K, 2 for the 50K and 1 for the 30K or 20K. At World Series events, the top three men and women in the 50K, 100K and 100M categories win a place at the Finals outright.

Is there a via ferrata on the Hajar Ultra?

Yes, at about km 87 of the 100M. It takes 10 to 15 minutes. You don't bring anything: an outdoor partner provides harnesses, helmets and guides on site.

Can you have a pacer at Oman by UTMB?

No. Running with anyone who isn't in the race is only tolerated in the marked spectator zones near aid stations, and anywhere else it costs you 15 minutes.

Is there phone signal on the Oman by UTMB courses?

The organizer says coverage is reliable in cities and along main roads, including the race region. You have to carry your phone switched on, with the LiveTrail app and roaming that works in Oman; airplane mode is a 15-minute penalty. Have the course map downloaded anyway, so you don't depend on the signal.
