Monte Rosa Walserwaeg course maps and aid stations

Five races that end in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, under Monte Rosa: a 120K from Aosta past the Matterhorn, the 100K from Pont-Saint-Martin, and three shorter ones around the Gressoney valley.

July 15 to 18, 2027 Aosta Valley, Italy

Monte Rosa Walserwaeg is a UTMB World Series event in Italy's Aosta Valley, first run in 2022 and part of the series since July 2025. Giuditta Turini and Franco Collé, two elite runners from the Aosta Valley, started it and are its technical directors. WalserWaeg is the name of the old Walser footpaths in these valleys, which the 50K follows.

Every race finishes in Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Les Sentiers des Valdôtains (100M) starts Friday evening in Aosta and crosses the valleys under the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. The Monte Rosa Trail (100K) starts Friday morning in Pont-Saint-Martin. The Walserwaeg Trail (50K), the new Gressoney Lys Trail and the Regina Margherita Trail (20K) stay in the Gressoney valley.

The rules say your phone has to stay on and reachable for the whole race, and airplane mode costs 15 minutes. Download the course map before you go, and the same phone shows where you are on GPS whether there's signal or not. The map shows the 2026 courses and cutoffs, which the organizer still publishes. The 2027 ones aren't out, and the new Gressoney Lys Trail has no route yet. The 2026 finish cutoffs close after the 2027 time limits, so they're left off, and the other cutoffs may move too.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Monte Rosa Walserwaeg by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

You start at 6:30 PM on Friday in Piazza Chanoux, in the middle of Aosta, and climb into the night to Valchourda and the Saint-Barthélemy valley, whose observatory draws astronomers. A balcony trail toward Valtournenche faces the Matterhorn, and you drop to Antey-Saint-André, 1,030 m, the lowest point after Aosta, before climbing again past Chamois and Cheneil to Breuil-Cervinia at km 76, where your drop bag waits.

From Breuil you climb about 1,140 m in under 10 km to Colle Cime Bianche, 2,979 m, the high point. It's 12.4 km down to the next aid at Champoluc in the Val d'Ayas, then over Sitten to Gressoney-La-Trinité and past the Walser hamlets at Alpenzu to the finish. The organizer gives 8,200 m of climbing in all; the stops and cutoffs here are from 2026.

The 100K, about 80 km, starts at 6 AM on Friday in Pont-Saint-Martin, in the vineyards of the lower Aosta Valley, and crosses the town's Roman bridge. It follows the Lys Valley through Lillianes, Fontainemore and Issime to Gaby, the first crew point on the 2026 course. From there it climbs about 1,230 m in 7 km to the Frudiere lakes, at 2,257 m.

You cross into the Val d'Ayas at Brusson, where your drop bag is, climb again to Rifugio Arp at 2,426 m, and come down to Champoluc. The last stretch over Sitten and Gressoney-La-Trinité is the same as the 100M's. The stops and cutoffs here are from 2026.

The 50K starts at 9 AM on Saturday from Lago Gover in Gressoney-Saint-Jean and climbs straight to Rifugio Ospizio Sottile, 2,484 m, at km 10, a drinks-only stop. It drops to Rong, climbs again past the Gabiet dam in the Valdobbiola valley, and comes back through Gressoney-La-Trinité and the Alpenzu hamlets. That's the 2026 loop, the one on the map.

The organizer calls it a course for people who like technical, demanding trails. The paths are the WalserWaeg, left by the Walser people who settled these valleys from about 1100 AD. The organizer plans no crew points on it.

The Gressoney Lys Trail is new in 2027: 35 km with 1,800 m of climbing, starting at 11 AM on Friday in Gressoney-La-Trinité. The organizer says it follows the Lys upstream toward the river's source, high in the mountains, then comes down to finish in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, on Walser paths and through Walser villages.

The route and aid stations haven't been published yet, so the map only marks Gressoney-La-Trinité and the finish. There's no crew access on this race.

The 20K is a 15 km loop with about 650 m of climbing, starting at 10 AM on Sunday from Lago Gover. It runs up the valley to Gressoney-La-Trinité, the only aid station on the 2026 course, at km 7.9, then back through the Walser hamlets of Alpenzu Piccolo and Alpenzu Grande.

The last section is the Queen's Walk, the path Queen Margherita of Savoy used to walk from her summer home, the Savoy Castle. The organizer pitches it at runners new to trail running.

Registration and entry

There's no lottery. Runners with a UTMB Index had 48 hours to register first, from August 18 to 20, 2026, and then entry opened to everyone until each race fills. There's no waiting list and no reopening. You have to be 18 on race day; the Junior Walser Trail, 9 km on Sunday, is for runners aged 14 to 17.

Fees for 2027 run from €220 to €250 for the 100M, €160 to €190 for the 100K, €120 to €145 for the 50K, €95 to €120 for the Lys Trail and €47 to €62 for the 20K, plus an 8% admin fee you don't get back. Runners who live in the Aosta Valley get the early bird price until February 8, 2027.

Italian law requires a medical certificate. If you can't see an Italian doctor, the organizer has a form for a doctor at home to sign and stamp; upload it to MyUTMB by June 17, 2027. You also need insurance that covers search and rescue in Italy, which the fee doesn't include. Without the organizer's cancellation insurance there are no refunds, and you can't defer to a later year.

Getting to Gressoney

By car, take the E25 motorway: the Aosta exit for the 100M start, the Pont-Saint-Martin exit for the 100K start, and for Gressoney the Pont-Saint-Martin exit, then 27 km up the SR44. Turin, Milan and Geneva are the nearest airports, with transfer buses into the Aosta Valley. Trains into the valley are suspended for rail works, and replacement buses run from Turin and Milan to Pont-Saint-Martin and Aosta.

Bib pick-up is at Lago Gover in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, with extra pick-ups at Piazza Chanoux in Aosta for the 100M and Piazza IV Novembre in Pont-Saint-Martin for the 100K. The organizer is planning shuttles from Gressoney-La-Trinité to the starts, and from the finish back to the start towns, with details about a month before the race.

Crewing, drop bags and pacers

Only the 100M and 100K have crew points, marked in the aid station tables. Each runner gets one supporter, who can only work in the zone from 500 m before to 500 m after the aid station and can hand over at most a 30 liter bag. Crews can't give medical help beyond small things like a blister or a massage while you sit.

There are no pacers. Running with anyone who isn't in the race, outside the marked spectator zones near aid stations, earns a time penalty. Every runner gets a 30 liter UTMB World Series bag at bib pick-up: on the 100M and 100K you see it at Breuil-Cervinia or Brusson and again at the finish, and on the shorter races only at the finish.

Weather and what to carry

The organizer warns that July in the Aosta Valley can be over 30°C, or down to -10°C above 2,000 m, with rain, hail or snow. Depending on your pace, your kit may have to see you through one or two nights on the course. The 100M tops out at 2,979 m on Colle Cime Bianche.

The 100M and 100K kit includes 1 liter of water, two headtorches with spare batteries, a hooded waterproof jacket, waterproof overpants, a warm second layer, a beanie, warm waterproof gloves and a survival blanket. Aid stations no longer hand out cups, cutlery or bowls, so carry your own cup of at least 15 cl. If you use poles, you carry them from start to finish: you can't pick them up on the way, and some signed sections ban them.

Monte Rosa Walserwaeg FAQ

When is Monte Rosa Walserwaeg 2027?

July 15 to 18, 2027. The 100K starts on Friday the 16th at 6 AM, the Gressoney Lys Trail at 11 AM and the 100M at 6:30 PM. The 50K starts on Saturday the 17th at 9 AM and the 20K on Sunday the 18th at 10 AM.

How many Running Stones is Monte Rosa Walserwaeg worth?

4 for Les Sentiers des Valdôtains (100M), 3 for the Monte Rosa Trail (100K), 2 each for the Walserwaeg Trail and the Gressoney Lys Trail, and 1 for the Regina Margherita Trail. Finishers also get a UTMB Index in their race category.

Can you have a pacer at Monte Rosa Walserwaeg?

No. The rules forbid running with anyone who is not in the race, except in the marked spectator zones near aid stations. On the 100M and 100K one supporter can meet you at the crew aid stations.

Do foreign runners need a medical certificate?

Yes. Italian law requires one for every runner. If you can't get one from an Italian doctor, have your own doctor sign and stamp the organizer's form for international athletes and upload it to MyUTMB by June 17, 2027.

Can I put my phone in airplane mode during the race?

No. Your phone has to stay on with the LiveTrail app, and a phone turned off or in airplane mode is a 15 minute penalty. Download the course map in Goat Maps before the start: with the phone on anyway, its GPS shows you where you are on the course, signal or not.

How hard is the Monte Rosa Walserwaeg 100M?

It covers 120 km with 8,200 m of climbing and a 36 hour limit, from Aosta at 581 m to a high point of 2,979 m at Colle Cime Bianche. On the 2026 course, the climb from Breuil-Cervinia to Cime Bianche gained about 1,140 m in under 10 km.
