Moab 240 aid stations and cutoffs

One 241.8 mile loop out of Moab, Utah, from October 8 to 12, 2027.

October 8 to 12, 2027 Moab, Utah

The Moab 240 is a single 241.8 mile loop that starts and finishes in Moab. It crosses desert, canyons and slickrock, takes in two mountain ranges, the La Sals and the Abajos, and skirts Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Destination Trail first held it in 2017, in memory of Stephen Jones, the runner who first imagined a 200 miler in a single loop from Moab.

The 2026 edition was cancelled on its third day. The organizer said it stopped the race "because of dangerous weather on course".

The organizer warns that some stretches, like Dry Valley and the Lockhart Basin, can go miles without a course marker, and every runner has to show the course track on a device at check-in. The runner manual only says some people may get good cell service at Dry Valley. Download the map before you go: GPS shows where you are without a signal. The map here shows the 2027 runner manual's aid stations. The course line is on the organizer's CalTopo map.

You leave town on singletrack to Hidden Valley and come down the Moab Rim Trail, then cross the slickrock of Amasa Back following painted dashes. From Base Camp it's 24.4 miles to The Oasis, most of it on Lockhart Basin Road and all of it exposed. The Lockhart stop tops you up with one liter at most, so you have to leave Base Camp carrying at least three liters, and they check. Past the Six Shooters at Indian Creek you climb along Bridger Jack Mesa into the Abajo Mountains. On the leg to Shay Mountain the last stream is at mile 9.5, at the foot of the steep climb, and there's no water after it. After Shay the Robertson Pasture Trail climbs to over 10,500 feet.

Double track takes you down from Monticello Lake to Dry Valley, and from there it's all road, along Needles Overlook Road and Hatch Wash Road and across Highway 191 to Road 46. Then you climb into the La Sals. Pole Canyon sits at 8,100 feet and has seen single digit temperatures in more than one year, and the leg on to Geyser Pass stays above 9,000 feet almost the whole way, with the most climbing of any. You pass Oowah Lake on the way down to Sand Flats, then run Porcupine Rim down to the Colorado River and the bike path back to the finish.

Getting in

Entry is by lottery. For 2027 it's open from January 5 to 24, 2027, and the drawing is on January 26. You give a card when you enter, and it's charged automatically if you're picked. A waitlist opens a week after the drawing. If a spot comes up for you, UltraSignup emails you an invitation you can accept or decline.

The entry fee is $1,795. A payment plan has to be arranged before you enter the lottery: $995 down plus a $100 fee, then four payments of $200. The Triple Crown of 200s puts you into Tahoe, Bigfoot and Moab with one registration, skips the lotteries and saves $300.

If you've paid in full, you get 50% back for withdrawing before July 1 and 25% in July, and no refund after that. If the race is cancelled for weather there's no refund, and a cancellation in the middle of the race earns no transfer credit.

Getting to Moab

Moab is on US 191, 31 miles south of I-70 at Crescent Junction. Canyonlands Regional Airport is 21 miles northwest of town.

The race starts and finishes at Sun Outdoors Arches Gateway, 1773 North Highway 191. There's no parking there unless you're staying. Park for the day at Lions Park across the street, and overnight in the Aarchway Inn's gravel lot with a pass from check-in. Check-in is on Thursday, October 7, and closes at 3:30 PM, and the mandatory runner meeting is at 4:00. You pick up your SPOT tracker at the start on race morning.

Crewing and pacing

You don't need a crew. Crews can meet you at Amasa Back, Dry Valley, Road 46, Geyser Pass and the start and finish, and at one of Shay Mountain or Monticello Lake. Amasa Back is reached only by the free crew shuttle from the Aarchway Inn, two crew per runner. For Shay and Monticello, runners are split into two groups at random four weeks before the start, and your crew can park only at the station it's given. Base Camp, The Oasis, The Island, Bridger Jack and Pole Canyon need a high clearance 4x4 to reach and are closed to crews anyway.

Bring one vehicle no longer than 20 feet or wider than 8.5 feet, with no trailer. You don't need 4x4, but bring a tire repair kit or a spare. Arrive no more than half an hour before your runner and leave when they do.

Pacers can join from Indian Creek. Crews can drop a pacer there but can't crew you or park along Lockhart Basin Road. After that, pacers join and leave at the crew stations. You can have one pacer at a time, they carry the same mandatory gear as you, and they can't carry your things.

Weather and kit

October in Moab averages highs of 73.5°F and lows of 41.7°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. On the course the organizer has seen anything from 7°F to 95°F, with heat in the canyons and cold, snow and high winds in the mountains.

The mandatory kit includes a hooded jacket, full-length pants, a long-sleeve insulating layer, a hat or buff, gloves, a headlamp or waist light with extra batteries, a whistle, a phone, 500 emergency calories and a device with the course track. The race provides the SPOT tracker, the emergency bivy and a wag bag. Human waste anywhere on the course goes in a wag bag, carried to the next aid station.

Moab 240 FAQ

When is the Moab 240 in 2027?

It starts at 6:00 AM on Friday, October 8, 2027, and the cutoff is 10:00 PM on Tuesday, October 12, 112 hours later. The lottery runs from January 5 to 24, 2027.

What happened at the 2026 Moab 240?

It was cancelled partway through. The race started on October 9, and on Sunday, October 11, Destination Trail stopped it "because of dangerous weather on course". The Times-Independent, Moab's paper, reported that a storm had stranded about 70 runners and volunteers overnight at the aid station near Bridger Jack, about 96 miles in, where they had heated tents and hot food. They were brought out on Sunday with help from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.

Is the Moab 240 a Western States qualifier?

Yes. The 2027 race is on Western States' list of qualifiers for its 2028 lottery, but only for a finish in under 108 hours, four hours inside the race's own cutoff.

Can you have a pacer at the Moab 240?

Yes, from Indian Creek, mile 67.8. After that pacers can join or leave at Shay Mountain, Monticello Lake, Dry Valley, Road 46 and Geyser Pass.

Where are the longest stretches without water?

Base Camp to The Oasis is 24.4 miles, and the Lockhart water stop on the way gives you only one liter, so you must leave Base Camp with at least three. Geyser Pass to Porcupine Rim is 20.9 miles, with Oowah Lake about four miles in. Filter anything you take from it.

Is there cell service on the Moab 240 course?

The runner manual mentions it only at Dry Valley, where it says some people may get good service. Your SPOT tracker sends your position, and the course track on your phone works without a signal, so download the map before you go.
