MIUT course maps and aid stations

Five point-to-point races across Madeira that all finish in Machico, from a 17 km coastal run to the Legend, which starts at midnight in Porto Moniz and crosses the whole island.

April 24 to 25, 2027 Madeira, Portugal

MIUT is the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail, run since 2008 by the Clube de Montanha do Funchal and now part of the World Trail Majors. The 2027 race is the 18th edition, on 24 and 25 April.

Every course is one way and ends on the square at Fórum Machico, on the island's east coast. The Legend starts at midnight on the north coast in Porto Moniz, climbs through laurel forest to Fanal, crosses the central mountains by Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 m the island's highest peak, and Pico do Areeiro, then drops to the sea. The Advanced starts in São Vicente, the Discover in Boaventura, the Marathon in Monte above Funchal and the Starter in Porto da Cruz, and each joins the Legend's route on the way to Machico.

The trail between Encumeada and Pico do Areeiro is closed to the public for trail works and opens to runners only on race day, so you can't scout the middle of the course beforehand. The map shows the organizer's 2026 course files and the stops from the charts on its course pages; either may change for 2027. Download it before you go to see how far the next station is.

Billed as 110 km with 7,200 m of climbing, the Legend measures 108.9 km to the finish on the organizer's aid station chart. It leaves Porto Moniz with a steep climb above the village, zigzags down to the mouth of the Ribeira da Janela by headlamp, then climbs to Fanal at about 1,150 m. The Vereda da Terra Chã takes you up to Estanquinhos on the Paul da Serra plateau, and from Encumeada a rocky ridge leads to Pico Grande and down to Curral das Freiras, where your drop bag waits.

The longest gaps come in the middle: 14 km from Estanquinhos to Chão dos Louros and 14.5 km on to Curral das Freiras, with 1,295 m of climbing in that second stretch. After Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro it's mostly downhill through Chão da Lagoa, Portela and Larano, then along the cliffs past Boca do Risco and over Pico do Facho into Machico. The stops and cutoffs are the 2026 chart's.

Registration and qualifying

Entry for 2027 opens on Rockthesport one race a day, from 12 to 16 October 2026. 80% of the roughly 3,800 places go to direct entry and 20% to a lottery, with pre-registration from 26 October to 9 November 2026 and the draw on 14 November.

For the Legend, Advanced and Discover you need a result in your ITRA profile from a single race since 1 January 2024: 4 ITRA points or 115 km-effort for the Legend, 2 points or 45 km-effort for the Advanced, and 1 point or 25 km-effort for the Discover. The Marathon and Starter need no qualifier. The Legend costs €180 until 30 November 2026 and €195 after that; the Starter is €40, then €55.

You can't transfer or defer an entry. Cancel by 30 November 2026 and you get 85% back, and nothing from 16 March 2027.

Getting to Madeira and the starts

Madeira's airport is in Santa Cruz, next to Machico and 13.2 km east-northeast of Funchal. Check-in and the expo are at Fórum Machico, by the finish, from Wednesday 21 April 2027.

Every race starts somewhere else, and your entry includes a bus to the start from Machico or Funchal. For the Legend you meet in Machico at 21:00 on Friday 23 April for buses at 21:30 from Machico and 21:50 from Funchal. The Advanced, Discover and Marathon buses leave on Saturday morning, and the Starter's on Sunday at 6:45 from Machico. If you drop out at an aid station, the organizer arranges your ride back to Machico.

Crewing

Only the Legend, Advanced and Discover allow personal assistance, and only at the aid stations the charts mark for it, within 20 m either side, with one helper per runner. That's Estanquinhos, Curral das Freiras and Chão da Lagoa on the Legend, Curral das Freiras and Chão da Lagoa on the Advanced, and Chão da Lagoa and Larano on the Discover. At Curral das Freiras your helper has to show the access card you're given at check-in.

The Marathon and Starter allow no assistance at all. Running with a pacer outside the assistance areas costs a 1 hour penalty, and taking help outside them costs 30 minutes.

Weather and kit

Funchal averages 21°C by day and 15°C at night in April, by IPMA's 1991 to 2020 normals, but the course spends hours far higher. The weather station at Pico do Areeiro, at 1,610 m, averaged a high of 9°C and a low of 3°C in April from 1961 to 1990. The organizer can make a cold weather kit mandatory: a long-sleeved thermal top, waterproof trousers, a hat or buff over the ears and waterproof gloves.

Aid stations hand out no cups, so carry your own, and the three longest races also need a bowl and utensil for solid food. The Legend and Advanced need two headlamps with spare batteries and a flashing red light on your pack at night; the Discover needs one headlamp. Everyone carries a 1 liter reservoir, a waterproof jacket, a thermal blanket, a whistle and a working phone.

MIUT FAQ

When is MIUT 2027?

24 and 25 April 2027. The Legend starts at midnight on the night of 23 to 24 April in Porto Moniz, the Advanced, Discover and Marathon start on Saturday the 24th, and the Starter runs on Sunday the 25th.

Is MIUT a Western States qualifier?

Yes, the Legend is. Western States lists the April 2027 MIUT 110 km as a qualifier for the 2028 race if you finish in under 29 hours. The shorter races don't qualify.

What do you need to enter the MIUT Legend?

At least 4 ITRA points, or a 115 km-effort score, from one race finished since 1 January 2024 and shown in your ITRA profile when you register. You also have to be 21 by the end of 2027, and upload a medical certificate and questionnaire by 20 March 2027.

Can you have a pacer at MIUT?

No. Running with a pacer outside the assistance areas costs a 1 hour penalty. A single helper can meet you at the aid stations marked for assistance in the Legend, Advanced and Discover.

Can you run the MIUT course before the race?

Most of it, but not the middle. The trail between Encumeada and Pico do Areeiro is closed to the public for trail works, and the organizer says only runners on race day may use it.

How much climbing is the MIUT Legend?

The 2027 regulations give 7,200 m of climbing over 110 km, with a 32 hour limit. The organizer's aid station chart adds up 7,165 m over 108.9 km. The high point is Pico Ruivo, 1,862 m.
