MaXi-Race Annecy course maps and aid stations

The 100 km tOur du Lac around Lake Annecy by its mountains, and the shorter races that run pieces of it.

May 28 to 30, 2027 Annecy, Haute-Savoie, France

The MaXi-Race is a weekend of trail races in Annecy, in the French Alps. The main event, the tOur du Lac, is a 100 km loop of the mountains around Lake Annecy, run clockwise since 2026. You can also split it over two days, or run part of it: the Demi-tOur from Doussard at the south end of the lake, the Marathon-eXpérience loop up the Semnoz, or the downhill Quart de tOur.

The tOur starts in the middle of the night, and nobody can help you until Doussard, 46.6 km in. The organizer warns there's no water in the mountain sections, so you carry what you need between stops. Download the course map before you go so you can see where you are in the dark and how far the next stop is.

The map shows the 2026 courses, with the stops placed on them; the 2027 files come out in the spring. The kilometers and cutoffs are from the organizer's 2027 charts, which list the same stops at the same distances as 2026's.

You start from Quai de la Tournette in waves between 1:25 and 3:20 AM, and the cutoffs count from the last wave. The first climb is the Massif du Veyrier, in the dark, and most runners see the sunrise from a viewpoint. For the first 20 km your poles stay on your pack, and there are silent zones where spectators aren't allowed. Break either rule and the penalty runs from an hour to disqualification.

Alex and Montremont are light aid stations, and your first full stop is the Doussard base vie, 46.6 km in, where you can have a drop bag (€12). Leave there with 1.5 liters. The second half crosses into the Bauges through Bellecombe-en-Bauges and climbs to the Semnoz base vie at 85.5 km. From there it's mostly downhill to the lake, with no aid station on the way. If you drop after Doussard, or a cutoff stops you there or later, you're ranked as a "MaXi-Challenger". The map draws the 2026 line, and the 2027 chart has the same stops at the same kilometers.

Day 1 runs the tOur du Lac's first half, with the same night start, the same rules on poles and silence, and the same stops. You finish at the Doussard base vie, where a drop bag waits for every 2-day runner, and buses take you back to Annecy at no extra cost.

The Doussard cutoff is 1:30 PM. Miss it and you can't start on Sunday.

On Sunday you run the Demi-tOur course with its field, starting in waves from 8:00 AM. That's why the two days add up to more than the one-day tOur. You don't need a headlamp today. A bus to the start leaves Annecy at 6:30 AM (€12, booked before April 23).

The Semnoz cutoff is 4:00 PM. If you reach the Demi-tOur's shortcut, the bascule, after 4:30 PM, you're sent onto it.

The Demi-tOur, mapped here as it ran in 2026, starts in waves from 8:00 AM on the cycle path by Doussard's Marcel Talin stadium, and you need at least 40 Betrail points to enter. Water points come around km 13, 21 and 30, then the Semnoz base vie at 36.7 km, with views across to the Mont Blanc range on the last climb. It tops out at about 1,650 m.

At 43.1 km there's a shortcut, the "bascule". Anyone who reaches it after 4:25 PM is sent on a route about 3 km shorter with 400 m less climbing, and finishes behind everyone who ran the full course. The limit is 11 hours, or about 9 h 30 min on the bascule.

The Marathon-eXpérience is for runners who don't get much mountain training. It needs no minimum level, and there's no podium. You start in waves from 6:00 AM on boulevard de la Corniche above the MaXi-Village. The loop, drawn here as it ran in 2026, climbs to the Semnoz summit above 1,500 m and passes the base vie at 18.7 km (cutoff 10:35 AM). There's one water point around km 33 on the way down, then the finish at the MaXi-Village.

The Quart de tOur is two races on one course (the map shows its 2026 line): the men start at 9:00 AM and the women at 9:10 AM, from the Semnoz ski station. The organizer calls it a "negative trail": the chart gives 410 m of climbing and 1,440 m of descent. There's no aid station, no water point and no crew access between start and finish, so carry what you need. A runner bus leaves Annecy at 7:30 AM (€10).

Registration

Entry is a pre-registration with a card imprint, followed by a selection; you're charged only if you get in. For 2027 the pre-registration ran October 1 to 7, 2026, and demand was 180% to 450% of the places, depending on the race. Some places go first to local runners, partners and groups. Runners who weren't selected got first access to the waitlist from October 13; it opens to everyone on October 16.

Fees are the same as in 2026: the tOur, solo or in 2 days, is €175 until October 31 and €186 after; the Demi-tOur €115 or €125; the Marathon-eXpérience €85 or €96; the Quart de tOur €44 or €50. FFA licensees pay €5 less, and the registration platform adds about 6%. Without an FFA licence you need a PPS number (€5) by May 16.

Refunds come only through the cancellation insurance offered when you register. From October 20, 2026 to April 15, 2027 you can transfer your bib or resell it through the official waitlist.

Getting to Annecy

Annecy is 35 km south of Geneva, and Geneva Airport is about 45 km away. Trains run to Annecy from Lyon, Geneva, Paris and Grenoble.

You collect your bib in person the day before your race, at the MaXi-Village on Parking des Marquisats, in a time slot you book between April 23 and May 21. There are no bibs on race day. Free parking lines Avenue du Petit-Port, 2 to 3.5 km from the village. The tOur and Marathon-eXpérience start a short walk from the village; for Doussard and the Semnoz, book the runner bus before April 23.

Crewing

Crews can help you only in the marked zones at the Doussard and Semnoz bases vie, and the food tents there are for runners only. The rest of the course is closed to the public. Crews get there on the race's MaXi-Car buses from Annecy (an option you buy), by bike or by car; each base has 350 parking spaces. Riding up to the Semnoz is a 20 km climb.

There are no pacers. The rules forbid anyone running beside you to carry water or help you, and you can't be fed anywhere outside the zones. The Quart de tOur allows no assistance at all.

Weather and what to carry

May in Annecy averages highs of 20.3°C and lows of 9.2°C, with 109 mm of rain over about 12 days (Météo-France normals at Annecy-Meythet). In 2013 snow cancelled every race, and the course turned clockwise in 2026 partly because of heat and late-day storms.

Every runner carries trail shoes, a survival blanket, a charged phone, a whistle, a snack and at least 0.75 liters of water. The tOur adds a reusable cup, a headlamp and a waterproof jacket. The prefecture can add a cold-weather kit (fleece, long tights, gloves, hat and jacket) right up to the start.

MaXi-Race FAQ

When is the MaXi-Race 2027?

May 28 to 30, 2027. The tOur du Lac and the 2-day tOur start on Saturday, May 29, from 1:25 AM, and the Quart de tOur at 9:00 AM that morning. The Marathon-eXpérience and the Demi-tOur run on Sunday, May 30.

How do you get into the MaXi-Race?

You pre-register in early October with a card imprint, and the organizer selects runners from those entries. For 2027 the selection is done and the waitlist opened in mid-October; bibs sold back through the official resale go to the waitlist in order.

How many aid stations are on the tOur du Lac?

Five: light aid stations at Alex, Montremont and Bellecombe-en-Bauges, and the Doussard and Semnoz bases vie. There are water points between some of them, but none in the mountain sections.

Can you have a pacer or a crew at the MaXi-Race?

No pacers: the rules forbid anyone running with you to carry water or help. Crews can meet you only at the Doussard and Semnoz bases vie.

Can you use poles on the tOur du Lac?

Not for the first 20 km, where they have to stay on your pack, and not on two signed 500 m sections near the Col de Bornette. Elsewhere they are allowed unless signs on the course say otherwise.

How much climbing is the tOur du Lac?

The organizer's 2027 cutoff chart gives 5,782 m over 100 km, with a 24 hour limit. The course page gives 100 to 103 km and 5,300 to 5,500 m, depending on your watch.
