Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 course map and aid stations

A 100 miler and a 100K on the rocky ridges around Fort Valley, run by the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club.

May 15 to 16, 2027 Fort Valley, Virginia

MMT is the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club's 100 miler in the Massanutten Mountains, in the George Washington National Forest. The 2027 edition is the 31st. Both races start at 5 AM from Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp in Fort Valley and finish back there. More than 80% of the 100 mile is trail, and the race guide warns that the course is tougher than it looks on paper.

The 100 mile runs two loops shaped like a lopsided figure 8, first around Fort Valley and then south to Bird Knob. For 2027 there is also a 100K, which follows the first loop as far as Camp Roosevelt and then heads straight back to the start. The 2026 guide and results cover the 100 mile alone.

Cell service is patchy. Phones tend to work on the ridge tops and drop out down in Fort Valley, where the start and several aid stations sit. Download the course map before you drive in. GPS shows where you are without a signal, whether you're on Kerns Mountain at night or crewing on a forest road.

The first loop goes clockwise: a road start to Moreland Gap, then north along the western ridge over Short Mountain to Elizabeth Furnace at mile 33.3. The guide calls this third arguably the hardest, with only 6 miles of road and long stretches of rocky ridge. From there you cross to the eastern ridge and work south, dropping off it now and then to reach the aid stations. The middle third is the most runnable, with 8 miles of fairly flat road, but it is brutal on a hot day. The longest climb of the race, 1,550 feet in 2.5 miles, leaves Habron Gap at mile 54.

The second loop leaves Gap Creek along Kerns Mountain, probably the rockiest and most technical section on the course, and most runners reach it in the dark. It climbs Bird Knob, the high point at 2,835 feet, then comes back over Scothorn Gap to Gap Creek. The last 3.8 miles to the finish are mostly gravel road. The cutoffs at Woodstock Tower and Powells Fort are recommended and not enforced. 211 East, at mile 89.6, is a place to meet your crew with no aid station.

The 100K follows the 100 mile from the start: north along the western ridge to Elizabeth Furnace, then south along the eastern ridge to Camp Roosevelt at mile 63.9. Instead of heading on to Gap Creek, you turn for home, and the finish is 1.3 miles away.

It shares every aid station and cutoff with the 100 mile as far as Camp Roosevelt, which closes at 2:50 AM Sunday. That leaves 40 minutes for the last stretch before the 22.5 hour limit.

Entry

Entry for 2027 opens on UltraSignup on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 8 AM and closes on April 25, 2027. Either distance costs $250. The 100 mile takes 250 runners and the 100K 200, and a wait list starts if a race fills.

Refunds lose $25 if you withdraw by March 1. From March 2 to April 16 you lose $100, and you only get a refund if someone on the wait list takes your place. After April 16 there are no refunds.

If you want to see the course first, the club runs training runs on it from January into spring. In 2027 the first two are on January 16 and February 6, and each is capped at about 60 runners.

Getting there and where to stay

Race headquarters is Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp, 2239 Camp Roosevelt Road, Fort Valley. The club lists four towns with hotels: Luray is 9.3 miles away (about 17 minutes), Woodstock 13.4 miles, Mount Jackson 16 miles and New Market 23.9 miles. Every route in climbs a hill, and the club says Route 675 from Woodstock or Mount Jackson is probably the closer and easier one.

You can also stay at the camp for the weekend. In 2026 a cabin bunk was $30, a cot in a screened sukkah $10 and a tent or car spot $10, booked in advance, with no stays on Sunday night. Bring your own bedding. Dogs aren't allowed anywhere on the camp property.

Crews, pacers and drop bags

Crews can meet runners at nine aid stations and at 211 East, a parking lot on US 211 at mile 89.6. They have to stay within 200 feet of the aid station, and crew and pacer share one car. The guide warns that crewing here means dark, poorly marked, lonely roads and long waits. At Gap Creek, one of the busiest stops, everyone parks on the east side of the road.

Pacers can join at Camp Roosevelt (mile 63.9) or any crew aid station after it, and at Habron Gap (mile 54) after 6 PM on Saturday. Runners 62 and older can pick one up from Elizabeth Furnace. A pacer can't leave a car at Camp Roosevelt or Gap Creek.

Plenty of runners finish with nothing but the aid stations and drop bags, and the Solo Division recognizes those who do it with no crew and no pacer. Drop bags must be soft and fit a 16 by 10 by 6 inch box, with no poles. They're due by 8 PM Friday and aren't mailed back afterward.

Weather and what to carry

May normals at Luray, in the valley below, are a high of 74°F and a low of 50°F, with 4.2 inches of rain over the month. The race says highs are usually in the 70s and the coldest parts of the course dip into the 40s. Some years have been hot, with low finishing rates, and others haven't topped 60°F. It often rains at some point in the weekend, sometimes in violent storms.

The start is dark at 5 AM, and you can leave your light in a drop bag at Edinburg Gap. You'll need one again later in the run. Bring bug spray too, since ticks are plentiful in spring. There are no medical checks or medical staff, and except where noted no toilets or running water at the aid stations. Duncan Hollow, just before Gap Creek, is one of the wettest sections, and the guide suggests changing shoes at Gap Creek.

MMT FAQ

When is the Massanutten 100 in 2027?

Saturday, May 15, 2027. Both the 100 mile and the 100K start at 5 AM from Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp in Fort Valley, and the course closes 36 hours later, at 5 PM on Sunday.

Is MMT a Western States qualifier?

The 100 mile is, if you finish within its 36 hour limit. The 2027 race is on the list for the 2028 Western States lottery. The 100K is not on the list.

How hard is the Massanutten 100?

It has 18,500 feet of climbing in about ten climbs of 750 feet or more, none of them long but many steep, usually with a rocky ridge on top. In 2026, 102 of 182 starters finished. The guide's advice is to start easy over the first 33 miles, and that legs saved for after Kerns Mountain make up a lot of time.

Can you have a pacer at MMT?

Yes, from Camp Roosevelt at mile 63.9 or any later aid station with crew access, or from Habron Gap at mile 54 after 6 PM Saturday. Runners 62 and older can start with a pacer at Elizabeth Furnace. You can have one pacer at a time, and they must stay with you and can't carry your gear.

Is there cell service on the Massanutten course?

Some. Crews have historically had signal at Edinburg Gap, Shawl Gap, Habron Gap, the Visitor Center, the Picnic Area and 211 East. Camp Roosevelt, at the foot of the eastern ridge, is likely shadowed, and coverage at Bird Knob is very spotty. Carry the map offline.

How do drop bags work at MMT?

Ten aid stations take drop bags in the 100 mile and six in the 100K. Hand them in by 8 PM on Friday, label each with your name, bib number and the aid station's name rather than its number, and keep them soft and within 16 by 10 by 6 inches. Pick them up at the finish, since none are mailed.
