Mammoth Trail Fest course maps and aid stations

Four races around Mammoth Lakes, plus a kids' 1K, from a night run by headlamp to a 50K that tops out at 11,053 feet.

September 23 to 26, 2027 Mammoth Lakes, California

Mammoth Trail Fest is a weekend of trail races based at the Village at Mammoth, in California's Eastern Sierra. The talks, films and other festival events around them are free for family and fans. The 2027 edition runs September 23 to 26. The organizer hasn't said yet which day each race falls on.

In 2026 the Dragon's Back Ascent hill climb and the Tenkay night run were on Friday, the 50K and the kids' 1K on Saturday, and the 26K on Sunday. Everything but the hill climb starts and finishes in Village Plaza, and the 50K and 26K both climb to the summit of Mammoth Mountain. You can also enter the Mammoth Triple and run the hill climb, the 50K and the 26K on consecutive days.

The stops and cutoffs on this page are from the 2026 aid station tables, since the 2027 ones aren't out. The runner guide tells you to carry a phone and says staff will do what they can to reach runners in areas without service. Download the course map before race day: your phone's GPS shows where you are on it with no signal.

The 50K is a single loop with no out-and-backs, marked with purple flags. It leaves the Village on bike path and forest singletrack to Twin Lakes, then goes over Panorama Dome to Duck Pass Trailhead. From there it climbs the Emerald Lake Trail, picks up the Lake George Trail at the John Muir Wilderness boundary, and runs along Lake Mamie to Horseshoe Lake. The organizer counts seven alpine lakes on the course, which averages over 9,100 feet.

The big climb comes after Horseshoe Lake: the Dragon's Back Trail to the 11,053 foot summit of Mammoth Mountain, past the Hole in the Wall lava tube and through the Hour Glass, a short pitch of rock and pumice that the guide calls the most technical climb on the course. From the summit you drop down a steep access road to the Mammoth Mountain Trail, with the Minarets in view, and on to Main Lodge. Main Lodge to Canyon Lodge is 7 miles, the longest gap between aid stations, and the guide warns it can take over two hours. One last climb of about 300 feet leads to 2.5 miles of downhill on the Downtown Trail.

The miles and cutoffs here are the 2026 table's, for the last of three waves. Each wave gets the full 12 hours.

The 26K is a single loop marked with orange flags. It reaches Twin Lakes after 3.5 miles, then takes the Dragon's Back Trail, 2.75 miles and 2,400 feet, to the summit of Mammoth Mountain. That climb, with the Hour Glass section of rock and pumice, is the hardest part of the race.

Off the top it's a steep road down to the Gravy Train Trail and the McCoy aid station, then singletrack. Bullet DH, after McCoy, is the most technical descent on the course. From the Garage aid station it's a smooth 2.25 miles down to the finish.

The stops and cutoffs are from the 2026 table, for the third wave; every wave gets 7 hours. The Garage is stocked like the other aid stations but has no medical staff.

Tenkay is the evening race, and you need a headlamp. It climbs the Uptown Trail for 2.4 miles to the Garage aid station, loops about a mile and comes back through the Garage, then descends the Downtown Trail for 2.5 miles to the finish party in the Village.

The trail is marked with green flags and reflective tape, and in 2026 there were disco lights in the trees. Waves started at 6:45 and 6:50 PM, and each had 2 hours 15 minutes. There are no drop bags.

The hill climb starts at Twin Lakes Bridge and gains 2,400 feet in 3 miles to the summit sign on Mammoth Mountain. There are no aid stations, so carry what you need. In 2026 medical staff stood at the Hour Glass, the rocky section above Twin Lakes. A drop bag truck at the start takes your bag up to the summit.

Race morning, a bus takes you from Village Plaza to Tamarack Lodge, a walk of about 250 meters from the start. After the summit party, the gondola down to Main Lodge is free, and a bus runs back to the Village. The 2026 cutoff was 2 hours 30 minutes.

Registration

Entry is on UltraSignup. Registration opens in January, and the organizer emails details in December. The 2026 prices, before March 1, were $199 for the 50K, $150 for the 26K, $95 for the hill climb, $90 for Tenkay, $400 for the Mammoth Triple and $10 for the kids' 1K. UltraSignup ran a waitlist for 2026. Elite, para and 70+ runners can apply for reserved entries on the race site.

Bibs can't be transferred. If you withdraw, the organizer gives credit toward the next year's race: 75% from 90 days out, 50% from 30 days, 25% from 14 days, and nothing after that. In 2026 you could switch distance until August 31 if the other race had space.

Getting to Mammoth Lakes

The organizer puts Mammoth Lakes about 3 hours from Reno on US 395, 4.5 hours from Sacramento's airport, and 5 hours from Los Angeles. Mammoth's own airport no longer has commercial flights.

Free shuttles run all weekend. On the 2026 race mornings they left the Community Recreation Center and Canyon Lodge every 20 minutes for the Village, and both lots had free parking, but not overnight. The town sits at about 7,800 feet, and the organizer suggests arriving a day or two early to get used to the altitude.

Crewing and spectating

Pacers aren't allowed. Crews can meet runners at the stations marked for crew in the tables: the Summit, Main Lodge and Canyon Lodge on the 50K, and the Summit and McCoy on the 26K. They can't meet you at Twin Lakes, Tamarack, Duck Pass Trailhead or Horseshoe Lake, though Horseshoe Lake has a little parking for cheering.

To reach the Summit or McCoy, take the gondola from Main Lodge or hike up. In 2026 an adult gondola ticket for the race weekend cost $19, and rides down from the summit were free. Don't speed through town: the organizer can disqualify the runner.

Weather and what to carry

September in Mammoth Lakes averages highs of about 71°F and lows of about 40°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, and the summit is more than 3,000 feet higher. The race guide asks you to be ready for wind, rain, snow, graupel and sun.

No kit is required, but the organizer recommends a phone, at least 1 liter of fluid, extra layers and an emergency blanket. The safety team can also make a cold weather kit compulsory: a waterproof jacket, a phone and an emergency blanket. The race is cupless, so bring a bottle or a soft cup. Poles are allowed. Wildfires are a serious risk here, and the race can be cancelled or postponed for smoke without refunds.
