Lost and Found Gravel Festival 2027

Three gravel routes out of Portola into the Plumas National Forest, for the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship.

June 19, 2027 Portola, California

Lost and Found is a gravel race and weekend festival in Portola, in the Lost Sierra of northeastern California. It started in 2014, and the race fees go to the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, the nonprofit that builds and maintains trails in the Plumas, Lassen and Tahoe National Forests. The 2027 edition is on Saturday, June 19.

You pick one of three routes: the Full Bull (99 miles), the Mid Moo (58) or the Half Calf (40). All three leave Portola City Park and head north into the forest around Lake Davis. The routes were all new in 2026. They had more dirt than before and used parts of the Beckwourth-Genesee Road around the lake, and for the first time some singletrack. The 2027 routes aren't out yet, so the map shows the organizer's 2026 course lines, with their aid stations and cutoffs.

No one can help you on course, and the organizer puts staying on route on you. Signs and flagging mark the turns. Download the map before you go. Your phone's GPS will show where you are on the 2026 line and how far it is to the next aid station, even without a signal.

The organizer pitches the Full Bull at riders who want to race, and at fit riders who want a hard day. The 2026 route was 84% dirt, with 5,946 feet of climbing. Aid 2 (mile 42.9) and Aid 3 (mile 62) are the Full Bull's own, at the far north and east ends of the course, which the shorter routes skip. The longest gap was the 22.9 miles from Aid 1 to Aid 2.

In 2026 the pros started at 7:30 (men) and 7:45 (women), and everyone else on the Full Bull at 8:00. The cutoffs were 12:30 PM at Aid 2, 3:45 PM at Aid 4 and 5 PM at Aid 5. The map shows the organizer's 2026 line, with its aid stations and cutoffs. The organizer says distances are approximate, give or take a few miles.

The organizer compares the Mid Moo to a road century in effort: 58 miles with 3,564 feet of climbing and 70% dirt on the 2026 route. In 2026 it started at 9:00 with the Half Calf. It shares Aid 1, at mile 20, with the other routes. Its other two aid stations are on the last stretch it shares with the Full Bull.

The 2026 cutoffs were 2 PM at its Aid 2 (mile 36.2) and 3:30 PM at its Aid 3 (mile 47.8). On the map those are the Full Bull's Aid 4 and Aid 5.

The Half Calf is the social ride of the three, 40 miles with 2,850 feet of climbing and 60% dirt in 2026. In 2026 it started at 9:00, with aid at mile 20 and mile 29.5, where the cutoff was 1:30 PM. It's the only route with a category for class 1 e-bikes.

Registration

Entry is through BikeReg. The 2027 link wasn't posted when this page was checked: the organizer says it will go on the registration page and be announced by email, Facebook and Instagram.

In 2026 the Full Bull and Mid Moo cost $225 for adults and $110 for juniors (13 to 18), and the Half Calf $195 and $99. Prices went up $15 in the last two weeks and on site, and residents of Plumas and Sierra counties got $50 off. There are no refunds. Transfers go through BikeReg, and in 2026 they closed on June 10. Late registration was Friday only, at packet pickup in Portola City Park.

Getting there and camping

Portola is on the Middle Fork of the Feather River at 4,856 feet. Reno is 48 miles away, by the sign as you leave town on CA 70 east, which ends at US 395 at Hallelujah Junction.

You can camp in town. The City of Portola opens campsites along the river for the week (in 2026, Tuesday to Sunday morning), reserved through BikeReg, with showers at the park included. Lake Davis has its own campgrounds, mostly first come, first served.

On race day there's no parking at the City Park. The 2026 guide sent riders to the Portola Station Baptist Church lot on South Gulling Street, the rail yards, and Gulling Street by the ball fields. Cars parked on South Gulling between the park and the bridge get towed.

On course

There's no outside help: no support or follow cars, and you fix your own mechanicals. Fill up at the aid stations. Headphones and aerobars aren't allowed.

The roads stay open. In 2026 the start rolled out neutral on Highway 70 as far as West Street, and the bunch had the right lane for the first 8.3 paved miles. After that, expect cars, ATVs, motorcycles, livestock and wildlife on the dirt. Yellow signs mark the turns, orange flagging confirms you're on route, and color-coded signs mark the splits between routes.

Weather, bikes and tires

June in Portola averages a high of 77°F and a low of 40°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, and the ride goes ahead in rain, shine, sleet or snow. The organizer calls this the high country, where the weather can change drastically: carry at least a light windbreaker, and wear sunscreen.

The organizer recommends gravel tires at least 45 mm wide, up to 50 mm, and says a light rigid mountain bike on 2.0 to 2.2 inch tires is a fair choice too. Rocks and rain ruts cross the dirt roads in plenty of places, so check your speed when you're unsure.
