Leadville Trail 100 MTB course map and aid stations

An out-and-back from Leadville to the Columbine Mine at 12,500 feet, with 12 hours to ride it.

August 14, 2027 Leadville, Colorado

The Leadville Trail 100 MTB started in 1994, when 150 riders lined up in Leadville at 10,152 feet. Life Time runs it now as part of the Leadville Race Series, and it's a round of the Life Time Grand Prix in 2027.

The course is an out-and-back. You start on Harrison Avenue and head west out of town, ride over St. Kevin's and Sugarloaf Mountain, drop down Powerline and go south past Twin Lakes to the Columbine Mine, where you turn around and ride back the same way, apart from the last stretch into town. Most of it is rough forest road and high two-track, with a little singletrack.

The map shows the organizer's line for the standard course, 105.3 miles with 12,304 feet of climbing, as the race page gave it for 2026, and the miles here are for that course. The 2026 race itself was rerouted around the Willow Fire, and the 2027 course isn't out yet. Download the map before race week so you and your crew have the course and every aid station and crew point on your phones, with GPS that works offline.

The standard course, as the race page gave it before the 2026 reroute, is 105.3 miles with 12,304 feet of climbing, and its low point is 9,180 feet, in Twin Lakes. The miles and cutoffs here are the race page's for that course; the 2027 ones aren't out.

Out of town you climb St. Kevin's and pass Carter Summit, then take Hagerman Pass Road up to Sugarloaf Mountain and descend Powerline. Outward Bound is at mile 25, and from there it's 15.8 miles to Twin Lakes Dam, with crews at Pipeline on the way. From the dam it's 11.2 miles, past Lost Canyon, to the Columbine Mine at 12,500 feet, where you turn around. On the way home you climb Powerline, and it's 12.5 miles from Carter Summit to the finish. Every stop except Columbine sees you twice.

Getting an entry

The 2027 lottery is open December 1 to 15, 2026, and results come out January 6, 2027. It's free to enter: you give a card, and it's only charged if you're picked. There are no team entries, one application per person, and you have to be 18 on race day. The 2026 entry was $525; 2027 pricing isn't out.

You can also qualify. Each of the series' MTB qualifiers (Sea Otter Fuego XL, the Lutsen 99er, the Silver Rush 50 MTB, the Leadville Stage Race, Little Sugar MTB and the Austin Rattler MTB) gives at least 35 coins. They go to the podiums and in a draw at the awards, only to finishers of the longest distance, and you have to be there to claim one. Registration for the qualifiers opens in January.

Other ways in are a training camp with entry (from December 1, 2026), a coaching package with Boundless Coaching, a charity slot, and guaranteed spots for some Life Time Club-Access members. Entries aren't refundable or transferable.

Getting to Leadville

Leadville is about 100 miles from Denver and 128 from Colorado Springs. From I-70 you come in on Highway 91 over Fremont Pass or Highway 24 over Tennessee Pass. Eagle County Airport, 62 miles away, has daily commercial flights. The other option is Denver International.

In 2026 packet pickup was in person with photo ID at 135 E 6th Street, and the athlete meeting was mandatory, Friday at 10 AM. Riders and crews park at the Community Fields and High School lot and take the shuttle, or walk or ride, to the start. The shuttle stops are under a mile from it. Corrals line up on Harrison Avenue at 6th Street. If you'd rather not fly with a bike, Cycles of Life in town will take a shipped bike, build it and tune it, and ship it home afterward.

Crewing and drop bags

Crews can meet riders at four places, and each sees you twice: Outward Bound, Pipeline, Twin Lakes Dam and Lost Canyon. Crewing anywhere else gets the rider disqualified. Riders feed from the right side, so crews cross over for the inbound pass.

Outward Bound and Pipeline have no crewing or parking limits. Twin Lakes Dam needs a crew wristband. In 2026 only Gold, Silver and Red corral crews could park there, in reserved 10 by 10 foot spaces. Everyone else took the free shuttle from Outward Bound to an open crewing area with shade and seating, bringing only what fits on a lap. Lost Canyon was for crews with a reserved space and parking pass.

Drop bags go to Twin Lakes Dam and Outward Bound, in clear plastic bags marked with your bib, your name and the aid station. In 2026 they were handed in on Friday at the Leadville Race Series store, 316 Harrison Ave.

Weather and what to bring

August in Leadville averages a high of 68°F and a low of 38°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. The organizer says to expect anything from the upper 70s down to the upper 20s, sunny mornings and afternoon showers, and rain, hail or snow on race day. Lightning is a danger, especially above timberline, and cold, wind and rain together can bring on hypothermia.

Don't ride to Columbine without warm, protective clothing, whatever the weather in town. The roads aren't closed to traffic, and the course is marked with pink flags and pink and black tape. If you leave it, you have to rejoin it where you left it.
