Julian Alps Trail Run course maps and aid stations

Six distances that all finish in Kranjska Gora: three point-to-point ultras from Radovljica, Lake Bled and Žirovnica, and three shorter loops from town.

2027 dates not announced yet, usually in September Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

The Julian Alps Trail Run is a UTMB World Series race based in Kranjska Gora, below the Julian Alps in northwest Slovenia. The 2026 race guide counted more than 5,000 runners from over 80 countries.

The three long races start somewhere else and run back to Kranjska Gora. The 120K leaves Radovljica on Friday night and passes Lake Bled. The 80K starts at Lake Bled on Saturday morning, and the 50K starts at Lake Završnica above Žirovnica on Friday. All three climb to the Karawanks ridge and run it past Golica. The 25K, 15K and 10K are loops out of town on Sunday.

The race guide says that if you haven't seen a course marking for more than 200 meters, you're probably off course. It also recommends carrying the GPX on your watch or a GPS app in case markings are sabotaged. Download the course map before you go, and your phone's GPS will show where you are even without a signal.

You start at 9 PM on Friday in the old town of Radovljica and climb in the dark toward Jelovica and Babji zob, then drop to Lake Bled at 43 km. From Žirovnica the big climb begins, up to the Prešernova hut on Stol. The race calls Stol the highest peak in the Karawanks. From there you follow the ridge over Golica and Klek, descend to Mojstrana, and climb once more to Srednji vrh before the drop into Kranjska Gora.

Your transition bag waits at Žirovnica, which also serves a hot stew. Stol is a mountain hut, so its aid station has water, energy drinks, Coca-Cola and dry food but nothing warm, though you can buy hot food inside. Between Stol and Dovje there's only Sedlo Suha in nearly 30 km of ridge and descent.

The 80K starts at Mala Zaka on Lake Bled at 8 AM on Saturday and runs through Vintgar Gorge to Žirovnica. From there it's about 1,700 meters of climbing toward Stol. Then comes almost 30 km of ridge trail past Golica toward Klek, before you drop into the Upper Sava Valley. The last climb is Srednji vrh, and the final 5 km is downhill to the finish.

The race calls it 80K, though the 2026 aid station chart puts the finish at 79.2 km. Women on the 80K and 120K can ask for an extra bag at Sedlo Suha, where there's also a private changing area.

The 50K starts at Lake Završnica, in the valley above Žirovnica, and climbs past Valvasorjev dom to the Karawanks ridge, its high point. It follows the ridge to Golica and Klek, drops to Mojstrana and climbs Srednji vrh before the run into Kranjska Gora. The race says you'll see the Julian Alps and Triglav, and the mountains and valleys of Austria.

It starts in two waves, at 8:00 and 9:30 on Friday. The cutoffs here are wave 1's: wave 2's are 90 minutes later, with a 23:00 finish. There's no parking at the start, so take the race bus or get dropped off and walk about 2.5 km.

The 15K measures 17.3 km on the aid station chart. It runs the same way as the 10K at first: along the Pišnica river, past Lake Jasna and through the Tofov graben forest. Where the 10K turns for home, you carry on to Gozd Martuljek, cross the main road under the bridge and climb Srednji vrh past the lower Jerman waterfall. The organizer calls it easy, with no technical sections. Wave 1 starts at 10:40 and wave 2 at 10:45.

The 10K is meant for runners still getting to know trail running: 11 km, mostly on wide cart tracks, with some road and singletrack. It goes along the Pišnica river, past Lake Jasna and through the Tofov graben forest, staying on the edge of Triglav National Park, and comes back along a flat stretch with Špik in view. It starts at 11:40 on Sunday, with three hours to finish.

Registration

Entry is online with a UTMB account. For 2026 it opened to everyone on December 11, 2025, and ran to September 3 or until a race filled, with no waiting list. The 120K, 80K and 50K are open from age 18, and the shorter races from 16.

Fees came in steps, from 195 € to 259 € for the 120K and from 92 € to 145 € for the 50K. An 8% registration fee came on top, and the bus to the start of the 50K, 80K or 120K cost extra. You could hand your place to another runner for 20 € until August 18. Places couldn't be moved to 2027. Pre-registration for 2027 is open on the race site, but the dates weren't out when this page was checked.

Getting to Kranjska Gora

Tarvisio in Italy is 15 km from Kranjska Gora and Villach in Austria 22 km. The nearest airports are Ljubljana and Klagenfurt, each about 65 km away, and Trieste at 90 km. Ljubljana is 85 km away by car.

The long races start elsewhere. If you booked the start bus at registration, it leaves from the parking lot below the ski slopes: Friday at 19:00 for the 120K, Saturday at 6:00 for the 80K, and Friday at 6:00 or 7:45 for the 50K, depending on your wave. There's no parking at the 50K start, and for the 80K the guide sends drivers to Central Parking in Bled. After the race, 80K and 120K runners can book a bus back to Radovljica and Bled on Saturday evening and through the night.

There's no free parking in Kranjska Gora. The race opens a free lot in Podkoren from Friday to Sunday, 1.7 km from the start buses.

Crewing and supporter buses

Each runner may have one assistant, and only at the aid stations the race names. On the 120K those are Bohinjska Bela, Bled, Žirovnica, Dovje, Gozd Martuljek and the finish. The 80K drops Bohinjska Bela and Bled, and the 50K has Dovje, Gozd Martuljek and the finish. No one may run with you outside the marked zones near those aid stations, so there are no pacers.

The race runs supporter buses that link the crew points, booked in advance. Crews who drive have to use the official lots: there's no car access into Dovje, for one, and the guide gives a lot about 5 minutes' walk away.

Weather and what to carry

The race guide gives September in Kranjska Gora an average high around 20°C and an average low of 8°C, with about 94 mm of rain over 10 days. In bad weather it warns that the high mountains can sit between 0 and 10°C in the day and around 0°C at night.

On the 120K you carry two headlamps with spare batteries, at least 1 liter of water, a waterproof hooded jacket with taped seams, a survival blanket, long trousers, a warm second layer, warm gloves and a phone with roaming on. Kit is checked when you collect your bib. A cold weather kit can be made mandatory one to three days before the start. If you start with poles, you carry them the whole way.

Julian Alps FAQ

When is the Julian Alps Trail Run 2027?

The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when this page was checked. The 2026 edition ran September 18 to 20, with the 50K and 120K on Friday, the 80K on Saturday and the short races on Sunday.

How many Running Stones does the Julian Alps Trail Run give?

4 for the 120K, 3 for the 80K, 2 for the 50K, and 1 each for the 25K and 15K. The 10K gives none. The 120K counts in the UTMB 100M category, the 80K in the 100K and the 50K in the 50K.

Can you have a pacer at the Julian Alps Trail Run?

No. The race rules forbid running with anyone who isn't registered, except in the marked spectator zones near the aid stations. Crews can help only at the aid stations where support is allowed.

How hard is the Julian Alps 120K?

It climbs 5,855 meters over 122 km, with 32 hours to finish and a night start from Radovljica. The highest aid station is the Prešernova hut on Stol, at 2,174 meters.

Is there a bus back to the start after the race?

For the 80K and 120K, yes: buses run from Kranjska Gora to Radovljica and Bled on Saturday evening and through the night, booked in advance. The race guide says there are no buses from the finish back to the 50K start.

Do I need a medical certificate for the Julian Alps Trail Run?

No. The race doesn't ask for one, and everyone runs at their own risk.
