Javelina Jundred course maps and aid stations

Halloween weekend in the Sonoran Desert north of Fountain Hills: a 100 miler, a 100K and a night 31K, all run as loops from one desert base camp.

October 31 to November 1, 2026 Fountain Hills, Arizona

Javelina Jundred is Aravaipa Running's Halloween weekend ultra in McDowell Mountain Regional Park, north of Fountain Hills. The organizer bills it as the original costumed 100 mile party. There's a Best Costume award, and a fashion show before the night race.

Every distance starts and finishes at the Four Peaks Staging Area, which the race calls Javelina Jeadquarters. The first loop is 22.3 miles and swings out onto the Escondido Trail on the park's east side. Every loop after that is 19.45 miles on the Pemberton, Shallmo and Cinch Trails. The 100 mile runs five loops, the 100K three, and the Jackass 31K one on Saturday night.

Crews stay at Jeadquarters, and pacers can only join there, so whoever heads out with you is committing to a whole loop, often in the dark. The map shows where each aid station sits and how far apart they are, and your phone's GPS works on it without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Javelina Jundred. Check the official site before you enter or race.

Wave 1 goes at 6:00 AM on Saturday and wave 2 at 6:30. Each loop leaves Jeadquarters through Shallmo Wash, crosses the park road and climbs gently, about 600 feet, toward the McDowell Mountains. Coyote Camp comes first, then 6.5 miles of sandy washes and boulders to Jackass Junction at Granite Tank. From there the Pemberton Trail runs downhill to Rattlesnake Ranch at the North Road crossing. On the first loop you come home the long way, 6.6 miles on the Escondido Trail; on every loop after that it's the shorter Pemberton and Cinch Trails.

You have to start loop 5 by 6:00 AM Sunday (6:30 for wave 2) and finish within 30 hours of your wave's start, so by noon or 12:30. Finish inside 24 hours and the buckle is a bigger one. Pacers can join from loop 4, or from loop 3 if you leave Jeadquarters for it at 5 PM or later. If you drop, you're a DNF, even if you've covered 100K.

The 100K runs the same first loop as the 100 mile, Escondido Trail and all, then two of the 19.45 mile loops. The race page rounds it to 62 miles; the loops add up to 61.2.

Start your third loop by 6:00 AM Sunday and finish by noon. A pacer can come along on the third loop, or on the second if you leave Jeadquarters for it at 5 PM or later.

The Jackass Night Trail is one loop of the course on Saturday night, with waves at 6:00 and 6:30 PM (the event schedule also lists 5:30 and 5:45, so check your start before race day). You have 8.5 hours. Costumes, glow sticks and a headlamp are the kit list.

All four aid stations are open, and the longest gap is still the 6.5 miles from Coyote Camp to Jackass Junction. Jackass Junction is the party, and it's 10 miles from the finish, so save something for the walk home. There are no pacers on the 31K.

Registration and the waitlist

Registration opens on UltraSignup on January 1 each year and closed on October 1 for 2026. The 2026 fees were $525 for the 100 mile, $375 for the 100K and $195 for the 31K, before tax and UltraSignup's fees. Once a distance fills you join the waitlist, which runs first come, first served: in mid-October 2026 the 100 mile list had nearly 600 names on it. If a spot opens up you get an email and 72 hours to accept, and nothing is charged until you do.

The other way in is a charity bib through Wander Project, which means raising at least $4,000 for the 100 mile or $3,000 for the 100K. Crew canopy spaces ($100), RV spots and camping permits are only sold with registration, and the canopies and RV spots sold out for 2026.

Getting there and parking

The park is at 16300 McDowell Mountain Park Drive, north of Fountain Hills, which is 31 miles northeast of downtown Phoenix. Bib pickup is at Jeadquarters on Friday, October 30, from 10 AM to 6 PM.

The park charges $7 per vehicle per day. One vehicle pass comes with your entry and is handed out at the gate on Friday; extra crew and spectator cars pay their own. Nobody drives into Jeadquarters on race day. Unless you have a camping or RV pass, you park along the main park road and ride the shuttle: Friday 10 AM to 6 PM, Saturday 5 to 8 AM, and Saturday 4 PM to 3 AM Sunday. There's no drop-off zone in 2026.

Pets aren't allowed anywhere at the event, including inside cars and RVs.

Crewing and pacing

Crews only meet runners at Jeadquarters, which comes around about every 20 miles, so your crew never has to drive. Crews set up in reserved 10 by 10 canopy spaces at Jeadquarters, and there are two community crew spaces for runners who didn't get one. Aid station food is for runners and pacers only, but there are food vendors, coffee and a beer garden, and ice for sale at the Big Top tent. The race calls itself rated R, so think about that before bringing kids.

Pacers join and leave at Jeadquarters only, so a pacer runs a whole loop. You can have more than one, but only one at a time. Each signs a waiver, wears a pacer bib and goes on foot, and can't carry your gear or supplies.

Heat, cold and what to carry

The organizer puts the average high around 82°F and the low around 58°F, but race day has hit the mid-90s and dropped into the high 30s at night. The course is open, with almost no shade, and once the sun goes behind the McDowell Mountains it can fall from 80°F to 50°F fast. The medical team treats heat exhaustion in the afternoon and hypothermia a few hours later. Put a long sleeve, a headlamp and spare batteries in your drop bag. You can leave one at Jeadquarters and one at Jackass Junction.

Javelina is cupless, so carry a cup or bottle for refills. The race suggests at least two bottles from loop 2, for the long stretches between aid stations.

Javelina FAQ

When is Javelina Jundred 2026?

Saturday, October 31, to Sunday, November 1, 2026. The 100 mile starts in two waves at 6:00 and 6:30 AM Saturday, the 100K at 7:00 AM, and the Jackass 31K on Saturday evening. The last runners must be in by 12:30 PM Sunday.

Is Javelina Jundred a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finish the 2026 100 mile in under 30 hours and it counts for the 2027 Western States lottery. It's also a Golden Ticket race: the top two women and top two men get entry to the 2027 race, and if one of them is already in or declines, the spot passes down as far as fifth.

Can you have a pacer at Javelina?

In the 100 mile, from loop 4, or from loop 3 if you start it at 5 PM or later. In the 100K, from loop 3, or loop 2 if you start it at 5 PM or later. Pacers join and leave only at Jeadquarters and run the whole loop. The 31K doesn't allow pacers.

Where can crews see their runner?

Only at Javelina Jeadquarters, the start and finish, once a loop. Coyote Camp, Jackass Junction and Rattlesnake Ranch are out on the course with no crew access.

Do runners really wear costumes?

They're part of it. The race is on Halloween weekend and calls itself the original costumed 100 mile party. There's a Best Costume award, a Jackass fashion show before the night race, and the 31K's kit list says to come in costume.

How much climbing is there?

The 100 mile has about 6,296 ft, the 100K 3,956 ft and the 31K 1,164 ft. Each loop climbs gently, about 600 ft, toward the McDowell Mountains and comes back down. The trail is granite, rock and sand, and the course stays between 1,623 and 2,486 ft.
