Istria 100 by UTMB course maps and aid stations

Five races across the Istrian peninsula, from a 21K out of Grožnjan to a 168K from Labin, all finishing by the sea in Umag.

April 1 to 4, 2027 Istria, Croatia

Istria 100 is a UTMB World Series event on the Istrian peninsula, at the head of the Adriatic in Croatia. The five races start in four towns over three days and all finish on the seafront in Umag, the race centre, where you pick up your bib and catch the bus to your start.

The 168K starts on Friday evening in Labin and is the only course that goes over Učka. The 110K and 69K start in Buzet, the 42K in Motovun and the 21K in Grožnjan, and each joins the long course's line through the hills of central Istria.

Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: it shows where you are from GPS alone, with no signal or data needed.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Istria 100 by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

The 168K leaves the old town square of Labin at 17:00 on Friday and drops to the coast at Plomin Luka and Mošćenička Draga, both a few meters above sea level. From Mošćenička Draga you climb about 1,430 m in 16.5 km, over Vojak, the 1,401 m top of Učka, to the Poklon aid station. The organizer expects even the fastest runners at Poklon after 22:00, so you'll do it in the dark. The course then heads northwest through Brgudac and Trstenik and comes down to Buzet at 98.6 km, where your drop bag is waiting.

The second half crosses central Istria by Butoniga lake, down to Livade, 17 m above sea level, and up to the hill town of Grožnjan, then through Buje to the finish in Umag. Crews can meet you at Mošćenička Draga, Poklon, Buzet and Livade. The finish closes at 14:00 on Sunday, 45 hours after the start.

The 42K starts at noon on Saturday at the foot of Motovun, a medieval town on a hill, and reaches the Livade aid station after only 5.1 km. From there it climbs to Grožnjan, the second medieval town of the course, and joins the longer races through Buje to the seafront in Umag.

The organizer pitches it at runners new to trail racing. No crew help is allowed at any point, and unlike the 69K it gives no direct entry to the UTMB World Series Finals.

The 21K starts at 10:00 on Sunday in Grožnjan, the artists' town on a hill above the Mirna valley, and loses most of its height on the way to the coast. It climbs only 157 m. The one aid station is Buje, at 6.9 km. It's the only race open from age 16, and no crew help is allowed.

Registration

Entry is online, through Njuko from the race's registration page. UTMB Index holders got a 48 hour head start from 16 June 2026, and everyone else could enter from 18 June. Registration stays open until 31 January 2027 or until a race sells out, and there's no waiting list. All five races were still open when this page was checked.

Prices go up in tiers as places fill. On 13 October 2026 the 168K cost €303.75, the 110K €258.75, the 69K €157.50, the 42K €140.63 and the 21K €90, fees and VAT included. You can't transfer your bib or defer to the next year, but you can drop to a shorter distance up to three weeks before. The 21K is never refunded; for the rest you get 60% back until 1 December 2026 and 30% until 1 February 2027. No medical certificate is needed.

Getting to Umag

Umag is on the coast, 40 km by road from Trieste. The nearest airports are Pula (85 km), Trieste (90 km), Rijeka (125 km) and Ljubljana (130 km), with Venice 198 km away. Few buses run to Umag, so you'll want a car or an airport shuttle; the organizer suggests GoOpti.

It's simplest to stay in Umag, since bibs are handed out at the sports hall on Školska ulica and the race buses to every start leave from there: 14:30 Friday for the 168K, 05:15 Saturday for the 110K, 07:15 for the 69K, 10:30 for the 42K and 08:30 Sunday for the 21K. You need to have booked a seat, and your bus number is printed on your bib. If you drive instead, Labin is 91 km from Umag, about an hour and a half on toll roads, and Buzet 48 km, about an hour.

Crewing, pacers and drop bags

The 2027 runner guide isn't out yet; these are the 2026 rules. Crews are allowed on the 168K, 110K and 69K, only at the aid stations marked for assistance: Mošćenička Draga, Poklon, Buzet and Livade on the 168K, Buzet and Livade on the 110K, and Livade on the 69K. Each runner gets one helper, inside a zone from 500 m before the station to 500 m after it, who can hand you a bag of up to 30 liters. They can't give medical help beyond small things like a massage or a blister, done while you sit in a chair. The 42K and 21K allow no crew help anywhere.

There are no pacers. Running with someone who isn't in the race, outside the marked spectator zones near the aid stations, breaks the self-sufficiency rule. On the 168K and 110K your drop bag goes from Umag to Buzet and back, and every runner gets a small bag for what you take off at the start, which is brought back to Umag. Poles can't go in the drop bag: if you start with them, you carry them to the finish.

Weather and kit

April in Pazin, in the middle of the peninsula, averages highs of 16.2°C and lows of 3.9°C, with rain on about 13 days of the month (Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service normals, 1971 to 2000). The coast is milder. Učka is 1,401 m high and the 168K crosses it at night, so expect it to be much colder up there.

The 2026 kit list included a hooded waterproof jacket with sealed seams and a phone with the LiveTrail app and international roaming, switched on for the whole race. Bring your own cup, because the aid stations don't hand them out. Depending on the forecast the organizer can also make a hot weather or cold weather kit mandatory, and says which before bib pick-up.

Istria 100 FAQ

When is Istria 100 2027?

1 to 4 April 2027. The 168K starts in Labin at 17:00 on Friday 2 April. On Saturday 3 April the 110K and 69K start in Buzet at 07:00 and 09:00, and the 42K in Motovun at noon. The 21K starts in Grožnjan at 10:00 on Sunday 4 April. All five finish in Umag.

Is Istria 100 a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Western States lists the 2027 168K, finished in under 46 hours, and the 110K, in under 24 hours, as qualifiers for its 2028 race. The 168K's own limit is 45 hours, so any official finish counts; the 110K's is 28.

How many Running Stones do you get at Istria 100?

4 for the 168K, 3 for the 110K, 2 for the 69K or the 42K and 1 for the 21K. The 42K counts in the 50K category, but it doesn't give direct entry to the UTMB World Series Finals.

Can you have a pacer at Istria 100?

No. Under the 2026 rules nobody who isn't in the race may run with you outside the spectator zones near the aid stations. Crews can meet you only at the marked assistance points on the 168K, 110K and 69K.

How do you get to the start of Istria 100?

By the race buses from the sports hall in Umag, if you booked a seat: your bus number is on your bib. In 2027 the 168K bus leaves at 14:30 on Friday for Labin, and the others leave on the morning of their race. Every course finishes in Umag, so you don't need to get back from the start.

How much climbing is the Istria 100 168K?

The organizer gives 6,800 m of climbing over 168 km, with a 45 hour limit. The biggest climb is from Mošćenička Draga on the coast over Vojak, the top of Učka at 1,401 m, to Poklon: about 1,430 m up in 16.5 km.
