Swiss Irontrail course maps and aid stations

Four trail races in the Val Surses on one Saturday in August, from a 20 km loop above Savognin to a 78 km round past the Julier Pass road and over the Lunghin and Septimer passes.

August 14 to 15, 2027 Savognin, Graubünden

The Swiss Irontrail runs in Parc Ela, which the organizer calls the largest nature park in Switzerland, in the Val Surses of Graubünden. It started in 2012 and once had a 200 km race out of Davos. Today it is four trail runs on one day: the T78 and T55 leave Savognin together at 4 AM, the T22 starts and finishes in Bivio, and the T20 loops from Savognin. Hikers can walk the T22 and T20 courses as the H22 and H20.

The 2027 edition moves from late June to August 14. The stops on the map, with their kilometers and cutoffs, come from the organizer's 2027 event information.

The regulations expect T78 and T55 runners to find the course by map if wind or people take the markings down, and they recommend carrying the course map. Put it on your phone before you leave the valley: the map works offline, and the GPS dot shows you the line when the tape is gone.

You climb out of Savognin into the Val d'Err, cross the moorland of Alp Flix and go over the Fuorcla digl Leget, which the organizer calls the "Himmelstor", to La Veduta on the Julier Pass road. From there the course passes Leg Grevasalvas to Pass Lunghin, the only triple watershed in the Alps, then the Septimer Pass, one of the oldest crossings in the Alps. The high point is Uf da Flüe at 2,775 m before you drop over the Stallerberg to Bivio at about km 55.

The second half runs through forest past Lai da Marmorera, through Mulegns and Sur, back up to the lakes on Alp Flix, and down by Rona and Tinizong to Savognin. The longest gap between aid stations is La Veduta to Septimerpass, 13 km over Pass Lunghin. Stop in Bivio or later and you still get a result, ranked as T78 to Bivio over 55 km.

The T55 starts with the T78 and follows it to Bivio: up through Tgant Pensa to the Val d'Err, past Salategnas to the Fuorcla digl Leget, across the Julier road, then Leg Grevasalvas and a technical climb to Pass Lunghin. After the Septimer Pass you look into the Avers from the Fuorcla da Valletta, pass Leg Columban and come down the Stallerberg to the finish in Bivio.

That's 4,199 m up and 3,610 m down. You can hand in a bag at the start and the organizer takes it to Bivio. The cutoffs are 12:30 at La Veduta, 16:15 at the Septimer Pass and 20:00 in Bivio.

The T22 follows the Julia river out of Bivio, then climbs to Sur, with a view down to Lai da Marmorera. It crosses Alp Flix and comes back to Bivio over the Kanonensattel and Murter, on varied trail with some technical sections.

It starts at 10 AM, six hours after the long races, and hikers on the H22 walk the same course. The aid stations are at Sur, 7 km in, and Alp Flix at 12. Kit is light: a phone with the emergency number saved and a cup.

The T20 climbs from Savognin through the high pastures of Castelas and Bartg into the Val d'Err, then comes down through mountain forest by Rona. The only aid station is at Rona, 15 km in, so carry enough to drink for the climb.

It starts at 11 AM, with hikers on the H20 on the same course.

Registration and fees

Entry is online through Datasport and there's no limit on numbers. Fees go up in steps: the T78 is CHF 149 until mid-December 2026, then 159, then 169 from March 15, 2027. The T55 is CHF 109, 119 and 129 over the same steps, the T22 and T20 CHF 59, 64 and 69, with CHF 5 off for under 18s.

You can't get a refund or move to the next year. The organizer sells cancellation cover for 10% of the fee, and you can transfer your entry to someone else or another distance for CHF 20 until August 12, 2027. Online entry with a named bib closes August 9 and late entry August 13. Entering on site costs CHF 10 more, cash or TWINT only.

You must be born in 2009 or earlier for the T78 and T55, and in 2019 or earlier for the T22 and T20.

Getting to Savognin and Bivio

By train, go to Chur, take the Rhaetian Railway to Thusis or Tiefencastel, and the PostBus up the valley to Savognin or Bivio. By car, leave the A13 at exit 22, Thusis Süd, and follow the main road to Savognin. The organizer no longer includes a public transport ticket in the entry.

The start and finish at La Nars is closed to cars. There's paid parking at the lifts, about 100 m from the start, and at Davos Fallung and Villa Aurora; in Bivio, park at Plan Weiss at the village entrance. A night's stay in the valley gets you the Val Surses guest card, with free PostBus rides between Salouf, Savognin, Bivio and the Julier Pass.

Bib pickup is Friday, August 13, 15:30 to 18:30 in Savognin, or on race morning: 02:45 to 03:45 at La Nars for the T78 and T55.

Crewing and spectating

Crews may help only around the aid stations. Nobody may run or ride with you on the course, so there are no pacers, and there are no drop bags either.

The organizer suggests Alp Flix, La Veduta on the Julier Pass, Bivio and Rona as places to watch. Alp Flix is reached in summer by the Bus Alpin from Sur, CHF 12 a trip. La Veduta is on the Julier road and the PostBus stops there. Bivio has food and music from 10 AM, and the first T55 finishers come in from about 11:30. Friends at home can follow the race on its Pocketspeaker live app.

Weather and kit

Above 2,000 m it can drop below freezing and snow at any time, the organizer warns. August is also the wettest month in Bivio, with about 138 mm of precipitation on 12 days by MeteoSwiss' 1961 to 1990 normals. For the long races the organizer recommends five days above 1,200 m to acclimatize.

For the T78 and T55 you carry a phone with the emergency number saved, a pack or vest, a hooded rain jacket, a hat or headband, a headlamp, a cup, food, a survival blanket and an elastic bandage. The race pages ask for 2 liters of drink plus a 0.5 liter reserve, while the regulations say 1 liter plus the reserve. In cold weather the organizer can add a warm jacket, waterproof gloves and overtrousers. Aid stations are planned 10 to 15 km apart, and you bring your own cup or bottle. Poles are allowed and recommended for the T78 and T55.
