HERO Südtirol Dolomites course maps and time limits

A one-day mountain bike marathon from Selva di Val Gardena over the Gardena, Campolongo and Pordoi passes, on three courses of 60 to 86 km.

June 12, 2027 Selva di Val Gardena, South Tyrol

The HERO started in 2010 as the Sellaronda Hero and is now a round of the UCI Marathon World Cup: elite men race the 86 km, elite women the 60 km. Everyone else picks one of the three courses when they enter, and all of them start and finish in Selva di Val Gardena.

All three climb out of Selva to Passo Gardena, drop to Corvara, and cross Passo Campolongo to Arabba and Passo Pordoi. From there the 60 km comes back over Passo Sella, and the 71 and 86 km head through Canazei and up Val Duron to the Alpe di Siusi before the descent to Selva.

The stops and distances below come from the organizer's 2026 roadbooks; the 2027 roadbooks aren't out yet. Behind the time limits the organizer takes down part of the signage, so if you're riding near the cutoffs, have the course on your phone.

The 2026 roadbook measures the 86 km at 87.3 km with 4,500 m of climbing. After Arabba it splits from the shorter courses for a loop through Renaz and up past the Porta Vescovo lifts, with a water point near km 40.8 and the roadbook's highest point, about 2,360 m, just below Porta Vescovo. The roadbook calls the trail down from there towards Passo Pordoi difficult and tells you to ride it carefully.

From Pordoi a technical descent through Pian de Schiavaneis and Lupo Bianco takes you down to Canazei. Then comes the long climb up Val Duron to Passo Duron, the peak prize. Past Dialer you drop 3 km to the Zallinger turn and climb again to Zallinger. The roadbook marks nothing in the 23 km between the Pian de Schiavaneis aid and the Zallinger water point, though the regulations list refreshments at Passo Duron or Tirler until 6 pm, so fill your bottles at Pian de Schiavaneis anyway. Elite men race this course.

In the 2026 roadbook the 71 km measures 73.3 km, with 4,100 m of climbing. It follows the 86 km to Arabba, then takes a forest road straight up towards Passo Pordoi, the peak prize on this course, and rejoins the long course at the Lezuo restaurant just below the pass.

From there it's the 86 km's second half: the technical descent past Lupo Bianco to Canazei, Val Duron, the Alpe di Siusi and the run back down to Selva. As on the 86 km, the roadbook marks nothing in the 23 km from Pian de Schiavaneis to the Zallinger water point, though the regulations list refreshments at Passo Duron or Tirler.

The 2026 roadbook gives the 60 km as 59.2 km with 3,200 m of climbing. After the I Tablà gate it takes its own line past Ciampai and Piz Sorega before rejoining the long courses at the Bioch hut, then crosses Campolongo to Arabba and climbs to Passo Pordoi.

Below Pordoi it leaves the long courses at Lupo Bianco and climbs past the Creps dl Sella hut to Passo Sella, the peak prize. From there it crosses the Città dei Sassi and comes down ski slopes and forest roads, joining the long courses again for the last few kilometers into Selva. The 60 km roadbook puts Pian de Schiavaneis only 2.1 km after Pordoi, but the organizer's GPX and the longer courses' roadbooks have it about 4 km on, and that's where the table puts it. Elite women race this course.

Registration and what you need

Entries for 2027 opened on 17 June 2026 and stay open until 10 June 2027, or until the field of 3,027 starters is full, whichever comes first. Entry is online only, in the order entries arrive, and half the places are kept for riders who aren't Italian citizens. The early bird fee was €120 until 17 July 2026, and the last tier is €150. Elite riders enter through the World Cup. Riders with an FCI or UCI licence can also enter the World Cup's Master classification and start from the third grid, right behind the elites.

You must be 19 or over. When you enter you declare that you hold a competitive sport medical certificate under Italian rules, third-party liability insurance, and your club card if you belong to a club. If you can't start, there's no refund and no deferral to the next edition: the organizer recommends taking Datasport's insurance when you enter. You can switch between courses until 7 May 2027.

Getting to Selva di Val Gardena

By car, leave the A22 Brenner motorway at the Chiusa/Val Gardena exit; Ortisei is about 20 minutes up the valley, then Santa Cristina and Selva. You can also come over Passo Gardena from Alta Badia or Passo Sella from Val di Fassa. By train, change at Bolzano or Bressanone for a bus up the valley. The organizer points you to a booked transfer for a guaranteed bike spot, or to Ship to Cycle, which sends your bike to your hotel.

Bolzano airport has a growing number of flights, and the organizer lists Verona, Bergamo, the two Milan airports, Innsbruck and Munich as the closest airports to South Tyrol. Pick up your number in person, with an original ID, at the Pranives ice rink in Selva: Thursday 10 June 3 to 8 pm, Friday 11 June 10 am to 8 pm, or race morning 5:30 to 6:30 am.

Aid, mechanics and time limits

Help from anyone outside the race is banned except in the zones the organizer sets. Your entry covers the aid stations and mechanical assistance, though you pay for spare parts. Mechanics work at the start until 8:55, Corvara until 10:45, Arabba until 1:30 pm and Lupo Bianco until 4 pm. Aid stations serve until 10:45 at Corvara, 1:30 pm at Arabba, 2:30 pm at Porta Vescovo, 4 pm at Lupo Bianco and 6 pm at Passo Duron or Tirler.

Reach a time limit late and an official takes your number, with no exceptions. You can ride on without it or take the organizer's bus back to Selva. The finish closes at 7:15 pm on every course.

Weather and kit

June at Selva's weather station, at 1,594 m, averages a high of 17.9°C and a low of 6.3°C, with 136 mm of rain over the month (1991 to 2020). The coldest June reading there is -3°C, and the course tops 2,200 m at Dantercepies and Passo Pordoi. The race goes ahead in any weather unless it puts riders at risk.

You must carry a puncture kit and an ID, and wear a helmet, fastened, the whole way. The organizer strongly advises a change of clothes and a rain cape.

How long and how hard are the HERO courses?

The courses are named 86, 71 and 60 km, with 4,500, 4,100 and 3,200 m of climbing. The organizer's 2026 roadbooks measure them at 87.3, 73.3 and 59.2 km. In 2026 the 86 km was won in 4:30:11, and the last riders have until 7:15 pm.

Can you ride an e-bike at the HERO?

No. You have to ride a mountain bike, and the rules ban e-bikes and pedal-assist bikes, any other electric or electronic help on the bike, and tandems.

Do foreign riders need a medical certificate for the HERO?

Yes. The rules have every rider declare, on entering, that they hold a competitive sport medical certificate under Italian rules, and not having one means disqualification. You also need third-party liability insurance.

Is the HERO the same race as the Sellaronda Hero?

Yes. It was the Sellaronda Hero when it started in 2010 and is now the HERO Südtirol Dolomites. 2026 was its 16th edition, and in 2025 it hosted the third stage of the UCI Marathon World Cup.
