Grossglockner Ultra-Trail aid stations and cutoffs

Five races in the Hohe Tauern, all finishing in Kaprun, from a 16 km loop above town to 110 km around the Grossglockner.

July 22 to 25, 2027 Kaprun, Salzburg (Hohe Tauern)

The Grossglockner Ultra-Trail has run since 2015 in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Its main race, the GGUT, follows the Glocknerrunde hiking trails around the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain at 3,798 m. It starts and finishes in Kaprun and crosses the main Alpine ridge twice. The Osttirol Trail starts at Enzingerboden and the Grossglockner Trail at Kals am Großglockner, and both join the GGUT route on its way to Kaprun. The Weißsee Glacier World Trail runs from Enzingerboden to Kaprun over the Kapruner Törl, and the Kaprun Scenic Trail is a loop from town.

Most of it is high, technical ground with snowfields to cross, and the long races run into the night. The organizer's advice if you lose the markings is to turn back until you find one, and its safety page tells you what to do when you have no network. Download the map before you go: your phone's GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The stops and cutoffs on the map are from the organizer's 2026 altitude profiles, which its race pages still show; the 2027 ones aren't out yet.

You start at 9:30 on Friday night in the centre of Kaprun. In 2026 the route went through the lit-up Sigmund Thun Gorge for the first time, then climbed to the Mooserboden reservoir, crossed the dam and went over a snowfield to the Kapruner Törl (2,639 m). From the Rudolfshütte another snowfield takes you to the Kalser Tauern and a long, technical descent into the Dorfertal and down to Kals, which has your drop bag, a hot meal and a rest area.

From Kals you climb to the Glorer Hütte (2,642 m), go on past the Salmhütte to the Stockerscharte, then down over the Margaritze dam and up past the Glocknerhaus to the Untere Pfandlscharte (2,663 m). Lucknerhaus and the Pfandlscharte are time checks only, with no food on the 2026 profile. After the Pfandlscharte it's 19.3 km to Fusch with only drinks at Ferleiten, and then 15.1 km with one last climb back to Kaprun. The organizer recommends several races over 70 km before you enter. The stops and cutoffs are the 2026 ones.

The OTT starts at 4:30 on Saturday morning at Enzingerboden (1,483 m), at the bottom of the Weißsee Glacier World cable car, and climbs straight to the Rudolfshütte. From there it is the GGUT course: the snowfield to the Kalser Tauern, the long descent of the Dorfertal to Kals, then the Glorer Hütte, the Stockerscharte and the Untere Pfandlscharte before the run down through Ferleiten and Fusch.

You cross at least three snowfields, and the organizer reckons about 90% of the trail is technical. More than two thirds of it is high up. Kals has the drop bag and a hot meal. The kilometers here are read off the 2026 altitude profile, whose axis ends at 83 km; the race page gives 84.

The GGT starts at the bandstand in Kals at 7:30 on Saturday and follows the old Glocknerstrasse up to the Lucknerhaus. From there it climbs through flower meadows to the Glorer Hütte, past the Salmhütte and the Stockerscharte, with views of the Pasterze glacier. A technical descent takes you over the Margaritze dam, then you climb past the Glocknerhaus and over a snowfield to the Untere Pfandlscharte.

The organizer calls it the most runnable of its races, but it's still 3,500 m up and 4,000 m down with at least two snowfields. The second half is long: on the 2026 profile, after the Pfandlscharte there's only a drinks station at Ferleiten before Fusch, and a final climb before Kaprun.

Grossglockner Ultra-Trail Weißsee Glacier World Trail (GWT)

37 km from Enzingerboden over the Kapruner Törl and past the Kaprun reservoirs.

The GWT leaves Enzingerboden at 8 on Friday morning, passes the Grünsee and climbs to the Rudolfshütte, which has only drinks on the 2026 profile. The organizer counts the next stretch among the hardest: down to the Tauernmoos reservoir, then up through the Rifflkar past the Rifflsee to the Kapruner Törl (2,639 m), the high point and a time check. You come off it on a snowfield, run along the Mooserboden reservoir with a view of the Wiesbachhorn and cross the dam to the one full aid station.

The descent below the reservoirs is technical in parts as far as the Kaprun Gletscherbahn. From there it's flat into Kaprun. You need to be 16 or older.

Grossglockner Ultra-Trail Kaprun Scenic Trail (KST)

A 16 km loop from Kaprun up to the Glocknerblick and back down.

The KST starts at Salzburger Platz at 8:30 on Friday and follows cycle paths for about 2 km before climbing over the Bürgkogel and circling the Klammsee. From there you climb about 1,000 m via the Schneckenreitalm and the steep Jetzbachastensteig to the Alpengasthof Glocknerblick, the aid station on the 2026 profile, with views of Kaprun, Zell am See, the Großes Wiesbachhorn and the Grossglockner.

About 90% of it is on well kept hiking trails, so the organizer rates it not particularly difficult technically, and the descent comes straight back to Kaprun. The limit is 3 hours 30 minutes. It came back in 2026 after two years off and sold out.

Registration

Entry is through Datasport, and the 2027 races are open. Prices go up in steps: the GGUT is €209 until 30 November 2026 and €259 from 1 June 2027, the OTT €159 to €199, the GGT €129 to €179, the GWT €94 to €144 and the KST €59 to €89. Registration closes on 22 July 2027, with no late entries.

For the GGUT you need to have finished a race worth at least 3 ITRA points between 1 January 2024 and 31 May 2027, and you name it when you register. The GGUT, OTT and GGT are for 18 and over, the GWT and KST for 16 and over. Every runner needs accident insurance that covers mountain rescue, including a helicopter.

Cancel by 30 April 2027 and you get 30% back; after that there's no refund. You can switch races until 10 July 2027 for a €30 fee if the one you want isn't full. The Flex Option lets you transfer, change or defer your place once. In 2026 the event had more than 2,400 entries from 50 nations.

Getting to Kaprun, Kals and Enzingerboden

Kaprun is about 1.5 hours by car from Salzburg and 2.5 hours from Munich. Salzburg Airport is about 80 km away and Munich Airport about 200 km. By train you go to Zell am See and take bus 660 or a taxi to Kaprun, about 20 minutes. Austrian motorways need a vignette. In Kaprun, the Schaufelberg car park is at the bottom of the Maiskogelbahn.

The race runs shuttle buses from Kaprun to Kals, to the Glocknerhaus and to the Weissee Glacier World, for runners and their family or friends. You book them on Datasport and the ticket is on your bib. They leave from the Maiskogelbahn valley station; the 2027 times aren't out yet.

Enzingerboden is at the end of the Stubachtal road, about 17 km and 25 to 30 minutes from Uttendorf. Parking there is limited, so the organizer suggests parking in Kaprun and taking the shuttle. Kals is reached from Lienz via Huben, or by train to Lienz and bus 951 or 952.

Supporters and aid stations

There are no pacers. Nobody who isn't registered may run with you, even for a short stretch, and supporters can help you only at the supply stations, in the marked areas near them. The shuttles to Kals and the Glocknerhaus are the easy way for a supporter to see you mid-race.

The stations come in three kinds: drinks only, full stations with food, and on the GGUT and OTT, full stations that also serve hot pasta. No cups are handed out, so carry your own. Food can't be taken away from the station, and dropping rubbish outside a station costs a time penalty. Kals and the Rudolfshütte have rest areas, and the organizer asks you never to sleep alone on the course. If you drop out, it has to be at a supply station unless you're hurt or exhausted, and you must tell the race. Friends at home can follow you in the GGUT app or on Datasport Live.

Weather and kit

July at the Mooserboden weather station (2,036 m) averages highs of 13.6°C and lows of 6.5°C, by the 1981 to 2010 normals, and it's the wettest month of the year there, with 248 mm of precipitation. The organizer says to expect bad weather and sudden changes at any time. In 2025 storm gusts, graupel and icy temperatures, worst around the Glorer Hütte, forced it to stop the GGUT on Saturday, and only eight GGUT runners finished. The 2026 race had perfect weather.

The 2027 kit list is checked before the start. Everyone carries a waterproof hooded jacket rated to 10,000 mm, a charged phone with the race's emergency number (+43 680 215 22 63) saved, a first aid kit, a whistle, a cup and a waste bag. The GGUT, OTT and GGT add a bivouac bag, long trousers or leg warmers, long sleeves or arm warmers and 1.5 liters of water; the GGUT also needs a headlamp and spare batteries. The GWT and KST need 1 liter and an emergency blanket. Poles are recommended for every race.

Grossglockner Ultra-Trail FAQ

When is the Grossglockner Ultra-Trail 2027?

22 to 25 July 2027. The GWT starts on Friday 23 July at 8:00, the KST at 8:30 and the GGUT at 21:30. The OTT starts on Saturday 24 July at 4:30 and the GGT at 7:30.

Do you need a qualifier for the GGUT?

Yes. You need to have finished a race worth at least 3 ITRA points between 1 January 2024 and 31 May 2027, or show comparable races. The other four races don't ask for one.

Does the Grossglockner Ultra-Trail count for the UTMB Index?

Yes. The organizer sends the results of all five races to UTMB, so finishers get a UTMB Index score. The races also give ITRA points: 5 for the GGUT down to 1 for the KST.

Can you have a pacer or crew at the Grossglockner Ultra-Trail?

No pacers: you can't be accompanied by anyone who isn't registered. Supporters may help you only at the supply stations, in the marked areas, and can reach Kals and the Glocknerhaus on the race shuttles.

Is there a GPX file of the Grossglockner Ultra-Trail course?

Not on the organizer's site, where the official GGUT app shows the routes. The organizer's Trace de Trail account has the 2026 courses, and the map here draws them, with each course's aid stations and cutoffs from the 2026 profiles.

Has the Grossglockner Ultra-Trail been stopped for weather?

Yes, in 2025. Storm gusts, graupel and icy temperatures led the organizers to stop the GGUT on Saturday, with only eight finishers. The 57 km and 84 km races were started but stopped without results.
