Grindstone by UTMB course maps and aid stations

A 100 miler with about 21,000 feet of climbing, plus a 100K, 50K and 21K, all from the limestone chimneys of Mount Solon.

September 23 to 26, 2027 Mount Solon, Virginia

Grindstone is a UTMB World Series race in Augusta County, Virginia. Clark Zealand started it in 2008 and still directs it. Every distance starts and finishes at Natural Chimneys Park in Mount Solon, under a row of limestone towers, and heads west onto the ridges of the George Washington National Forest.

The 100 mile starts at 6 PM on Friday, so the first night comes early, and anyone still out on Saturday evening runs through a second one. The 100K, 50K and 21K start Saturday morning. The map below shows the 2026 courses and aid stations: the organizer still lists them for 2027 and says they may change.

The organizer warns that cell service may be limited throughout the course and that runner tracking can lag by up to two hours. Download the course map before you go, whether you're running or crewing: your phone's GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The 2026 course climbs over Narrow Back Mountain, then makes the big Wolf Ridge climb to Reddish Knob, about 3,000 feet up over the 9 miles between those two aid stations. From Little Bald Knob it follows the Wild Oak National Recreation Trail over Grindstone, Lookout and Hankey Mountains down to Dowells Draft. Then it goes south over Crawford Knob and up Elliott Knob, the course's highest point, and drops 2,000 feet in 2 miles on the Cold Springs Trail.

The way back runs through Dowells Draft again and down Magic Moss. From Camp Todd, the steep Horse Trough climb starts the longest gap of the race: 9.7 miles to North River Gap. Then the Tillman Trail takes you over Narrow Back again, and Lick Run brings you down to the chimneys. The organizer puts the course at 64% trail, 30% forest road and 6% paved road.

The 2026 100K takes in some of the 100 mile course. After Narrow Back Mountain and the Wolf Ridge climb it turns onto Timber Ridge, crosses Sand Spring Mountain and descends the Sand Spring Trail to North River Gap. The Wild Oak Trail takes you over Lookout and Hankey Mountains, then down Magic Moss and a forest road to Camp Todd.

From Camp Todd you climb Horse Trough Hollow and cross Little Bald Knob, Chestnut Ridge and Grindstone Mountain back to North River Gap, 9.7 miles with no aid in between. The Tillman Trail and Lick Run bring you home. You have 18 hours, with the finish cutoff at midnight.

The 2026 50K starts with a gentle warm-up, then a short, steep climb to the single-track ridge of Narrow Back Mountain. After the Wolf Ridge climb it follows Timber Ridge over Sand Spring Mountain. The 9.6 miles from Wolf Ridge to Sand Spring hold the biggest climb, about 2,300 feet.

From Sand Spring the Tillman Trail crosses Narrow Back once more to Lick Run, and you leave the forest at Bear Trap for an easy finish below the chimneys. Wolf Ridge closes at 10 AM and Sand Spring at 12:45 PM.

The 2026 half marathon starts fast through rolling country and enters the forest at Bear Trap. It follows Lick Run, climbs steeply to the Narrow Back Mountain ridge, runs the ridgeline, and comes back down the Tillman Trail. The Lick Run aid station serves you on the way out and on the way back.

You have 6 hours, and the finish closes at 2 PM.

Registration

Registration for 2027 hadn't opened when this page was checked: the organizer's page says it opens soon, and you can sign up there to be notified. Entries can't be refunded or transferred, but every paid entry can be deferred once, for any reason, to the next year. You must be 18 for the 100M, 100K and 50K, and 16 for the 21K. There's no race day registration.

100M entrants must also put in at least 8 hours of trail work during the calendar year of the race and send in the organizer's form. The work can be near home, or you can pay a $225 buyout instead.

Getting to Natural Chimneys

Everything happens at Natural Chimneys Park, 94 Natural Chimneys Lane, Mount Solon. Mount Solon is about 20 miles north of Staunton and 22 miles southwest of Harrisonburg. Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport at Weyers Cave has one airline. The organizer says Washington DC and Richmond are each within three hours' drive.

The park's campground has 164 sites, 144 of them with water and electricity, plus showers and a small camp store. Don't camp in the front parking field: the permit forbids it, and you or your runner risk disqualification.

Crewing and pacing

Only the 100M and 100K have crews, and only at North River Gap, Dowells Draft (100M), Camp Todd and the finish. Crew or spectate anywhere else and your runner can be disqualified. Magic Moss has no crew access, so drive past without stopping.

North River Gap is shuttle only: park in the field at Stokesville Church on North River Road and ride the van, which ran every 10 to 15 minutes in 2026, then walk 300 meters. At Dowells Draft you park single file on the shoulder of Braley Pond Road and walk 300 meters past the gate. Camp Todd is on gravel forest roads: drive slowly, and park past the aid station. In 2026 the drive from the park was about 15 minutes to North River Gap, 30 to Dowells Draft and 35 to Camp Todd. Dogs aren't allowed at the crew points.

Pacers are allowed in the 100M only, one at a time. They can join at Dowells Draft (either visit), Camp Todd or North River Gap 2, and must pick up their pacer bib at the expo, since there's no check-in at aid stations.

Weather and what to carry

September in Staunton averages a high of about 77°F and a low of about 56°F (NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals). The ridges are higher, and the organizer warns that this time of year brings anything from heat to snow on the summits. It can make a hot or cold weather kit mandatory, sometimes only a few days out.

For the 100M the mandatory kit is 1 liter of water capacity, a reusable cup, a running pack, a phone, a hooded jacket, two headlamps with spare batteries, 800 kcal of food, a hat, a whistle and a survival blanket. The 100K needs the same with one headlamp. Trekking poles are allowed in every distance.

Grindstone FAQ

When is Grindstone 2027?

September 23 to 26, 2027. The 100M starts Friday the 24th at 6 PM, and the 100K, 50K and 21K start Saturday the 25th at 6, 7 and 8 AM.

Is Grindstone a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Western States lists the Grindstone 100M (36 hour limit) and 100K (18 hour limit) as qualifiers, including the 2027 races for the 2028 lottery. Check Western States' list before you enter.

How many Running Stones do you get at Grindstone?

4 for the 100M, 3 for the 100K, 2 for the 50K and 1 for the 21K. The top three men and women in the 100M, 100K and 50K also win a place at the next UTMB World Series Finals in the same category, which they pay for.

Can you have a pacer at Grindstone?

Only in the 100M. Your pacer can join at Dowells Draft 1, Dowells Draft 2, Camp Todd or North River Gap 2, must wear a pacer bib, and must check in at the expo.

Is there cell service on the Grindstone course?

Not reliably. The organizer warns that cell service may be limited throughout the course and that tracking updates can lag by up to two hours. Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS still works without a signal.

Is the 2027 Grindstone course the same as 2026?

The organizer still publishes the 2026 GPX files and aid station charts for 2027, and says they may change. This page maps the 2026 courses. The GPX files have 2025 in their names because the course didn't change: the 2025 and 2026 aid station charts are the same. Follow the course markings on race day, which take priority over any GPX.
