Grand Raid des Pyrénées course maps and aid stations

Seven courses in five August days in the Hautes-Pyrénées, from 40 km to the 160 km Ultra Tour over the Pic du Midi.

2027 dates not announced yet, usually in August Vielle-Aure, Hautes-Pyrénées

The Grand Raid des Pyrénées, or GRP, is based in Vielle-Aure, in the Aure valley next to Saint-Lary-Soulan. It was first run in 2008, and the organizer has billed 2027 as the race's 20th anniversary. Its seven courses start in Vielle-Aure, Saint-Lary, the Pla d'Adet and the Piau-Engaly ski resort. Between them they cross the Néouvielle massif, climb the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and run past the cirques of Gavarnie and Estaubé.

The map shows the 2026 courses. The 2027 ones aren't out yet.

On the 160 km and the Tour des Cirques you can go up to six hours between aid stations, and much of it is mountain trail that's hard to run. The rules say the marking on the ground is the only official route, whatever GPX you loaded beforehand. Download the course to your phone anyway, so GPS can tell you where you are and how far the next station is.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Grand Raid des Pyrénées. Check the official site before you enter or race.

It's called the 160 but the 2026 timetable runs to 174.2 km with 10,406 m of climbing, and you have 50 hours. You climb to the Col de Portet on roads and ski runs, cross the Col de Bastanet into the Néouvielle and face the steep Serpolet wall before La Mongie. Then you go up to the Col de Sencours and the Pic du Midi summit, and along a string of cols to Hautacam. The first base vie is down at Pierrefitte. From there you go round the Cabaliros to Lac d'Estaing, over the Col d'Ilhéou to Cauterets and the Col de Riou to Luz, the second base vie, and back into the Néouvielle by Tournaboup and the Hourquette Nère.

Campana de Cloutou and the Refuge d'Ilhéou are water only, and the first pass at Sencours has only water and soft drinks. There's an extra cutoff with no aid on the descent from the Col d'Aoube, km 51.2, at 17:50. Pierrefitte, Luz and Tournaboup also have entry cutoffs half an hour before the exit times shown. The 160 can be run as a relay of four legs by a team of two to four, handing over at La Mongie, Pierrefitte and Luz, with 44 hours.

The Cirques starts at Piau-Engaly with a loop above the resort facing the cirque de Barroude. You cross the Port de Campbieil, the high point, and drop a long way to Gèdre. A gentle climb takes you onto the Saugué plateau facing the cirque de Gavarnie, then through Gavarnie village to the foot of the great waterfall. A balcony path leads to the Refuge des Espuguettes, and a steep climb over the Hourquette d'Alans into the cirque d'Estaubé.

After Gèdre a second time and the base vie at Luz, you climb a long way to the Refuge de la Glère and finish over the Hourquette Nère and the Col de Portet. The 2026 timetable gives 126.7 km and 7,036 m of climbing, with 41 hours. Luz and Tournaboup have entry cutoffs half an hour before the exit times shown.

The Moudang starts on Thursday at 5:30 am with a loop in the Piau-Engaly resort, then drops to the chapelle des Templiers. A long climb leads to Port Vieux with the muraille de Barroude ahead, and on under the pic de l'Aiguillette, where the organizer asks for care on a balcony section. You come down a steep path beside the Hourquet stream to the aid station at the Bielsa tunnel.

From there you climb to the Port de Bataillence and the Lac d'Héchempy, follow a rough path to the granges de Moudang and run five km of forest road to the Pont du Moudang. The lakes road and paths past the Lac de l'Oule bring you to Les Merlans and the final descent.

The Bastan starts at the Pla d'Adet above Saint-Lary and climbs the ski runs to the Col de Portet. After Les Merlans you drop to the Lac de l'Oule, climb through the Bastanet fir forest to the Lac de Port Bielh and cross the Hourquette Nère. A kilometer later comes the Pas de la Crabe and its scree, which the organizer warns about both ways.

You reach La Mongie on ski runs, then climb hard to the Serpolet and on past the Laquets dam to Campana de Cloutou. The Col de Bastanet, 2,509 m, is the high point, and a nearly level path past the Bastan lakes brings you back to Les Merlans before the long descent. The finish cutoff is 22:30, 15 and a half hours after the start.

Registration and effort points

Every race but the 160 km relay goes to a lottery. Pre-registration costs €1, which you don't get back if you aren't drawn, and up to 10 people can enter the draw as a group. Those drawn have a deadline to pay, after which their places go down the list. Relay entries open after the other races are confirmed. The FAQ says registration dates are announced on the homepage, usually at the end of the year.

The three ultras need effort points from one race you finished, counted as one point per km plus one per 100 m of climbing: 130 for the 160 km, 95 for the Tour des Cirques and 65 for the Tour des Lacs. For 2026 the race had to be from 2021 on, and the organizer allows no exceptions.

In 2026 the fees ran from €67 for the Néouvielle to €206 for the 160 km, rising on 1 May (€77 and €218). You could transfer your bib through the registration platform from 30 March to 30 June.

Getting to Vielle-Aure

Vielle-Aure is next to Saint-Lary-Soulan, which is 35 km from the Lannemezan exit of the A64. Tarbes-Lourdes airport is about 80 km away and Toulouse about 150. Without a car, take the TGV to Tarbes and the SNCF coach on to Saint-Lary, or a train from Toulouse to Lannemezan and the bus up the valley to the Vielle-Aure stop.

Bib pick-up is under the marquee in Vielle-Aure, and no bibs are handed out on race morning. The races starting at Piau-Engaly have shuttles from the camper van car park in Saint-Lary, a paid option you book through the registration platform. For the Tour du Bastan, you ride the gondola from Saint-Lary up to the Pla d'Adet start.

Crewing and the bases vie

Crews can't go into the aid stations. Outside certain stations there's a marked zone for personal assistance, and the organizer posts the list before the race. Help anywhere else earns a penalty. Nobody without a bib may run with you, so there are no pacers.

The organizer's spectator maps show which stations you can drive to. For the 160 that's La Mongie, Hautacam, Pierrefitte, Lac d'Estaing, Cauterets, Béderet, Luz and Tournaboup, with a 25 minute walk to Les Merlans from the Col de Portet and an hour's walk to the Col de Sencours from the Col du Tourmalet. Crews for the Cirques can reach Piau, Gèdre, Gavarnie, Luz and Tournaboup.

The 160 has two bases vie, Pierrefitte and Luz, and the Cirques has Luz. You get a 30 liter bag for each and leave it at the Vielle-Aure school the day before the start. The bases vie have a hot meal, a rest area and cold showers. Hot showers at the finish are at the Rioumajou campsite, by shuttle.

Weather and what to carry

The Pic du Midi, 2,877 m, is on both the 160 and the Tour des Lacs. Up there August averages 9.9°C by day and 4.4°C at night, and it has dropped to -5°C. The rules warn of cold, strong heat, rain, high winds and storms, and the long courses run through the night.

For the 160, the Cirques, the Lacs and the Moudang the kit includes a cup, 2 liters of water, two lamps with spare batteries, a hooded waterproof jacket of at least 10,000 Schmerber, long tights or trousers, a warm mid layer, full gloves and a survival blanket. The organizer can drop the gloves and mid layer at the briefing if the forecast is good. On the shorter races the kit still includes a cup, the jacket, a blanket and 2 liters of water, 1 liter for the Néouvielle. Don't drink from the streams: herds graze the mountains, and their patou guard dogs can turn aggressive.

GRP FAQ

When is the Grand Raid des Pyrénées 2027?

The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when this page was checked. The organizer is calling 2027 the race's 20th anniversary. The 2026 edition ran from Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 August, with the Moudang, the Bastan and the Géla on Thursday, the 160 km, the Tour des Cirques and the Tour du Néouvielle on Friday and the Tour des Lacs on Saturday.

How long is the Grand Raid des Pyrénées 160 km really?

The 2026 timetable puts the finish at 174.2 km, with 10,406 m of climbing. The rules give round figures and say the exact ones are on the website.

Do you need qualifying races to enter the GRP?

For the three ultras, yes: one finished race worth 130 effort points for the 160 km solo, 95 for the Tour des Cirques or 65 for the Tour des Lacs, at one point per km plus one per 100 m of climbing. The other races and the relay need none. You still need a French Pass Prévention Santé or an FFA licence for any of them.

Can you have a pacer at the Grand Raid des Pyrénées?

No. The rules say nobody without a bib may go with a runner on the course, and crews can help you only in the marked zones outside some aid stations.

Where do I get the GRP course GPX?

Each course page on grandraidpyrenees.com links its GPX on Trail-Passion, and the map on this page is drawn from the 2026 files. On race day, follow the marking: the rules say it's the only official route.

Are there drop bags at the Grand Raid des Pyrénées?

Only on the 160 km solo, at Pierrefitte and Luz, and the Tour des Cirques, at Luz. These are the bases vie, with a 30 liter bag each, a hot meal and somewhere to rest.
