Georgia Death Race course map and aid stations

About 74 miles of North Georgia ridges, point to point from Blairsville to Amicalola Falls, and you carry a railroad spike the whole way.

March 27, 2027 Blairsville, Georgia

The Georgia Death Race runs from Byron Herbert Reece Farm, outside Blairsville, to Amicalola Falls State Park. The organizer calls it 74ish miles, with 16,000 ft of climbing and as much descent. You carry a 1 lb railroad spike from start to finish, and if you make it, you throw it in a coffin and get an engraved one back. About 60% of starters finish.

The course follows the Duncan Ridge and Benton MacKaye Trails over Coosa Bald, crosses the Toccoa River on a swinging bridge, then turns south on forest roads toward Amicalola. The last miles climb the stairs beside the state's tallest waterfall.

The crew guide warns that cell service is extremely limited and tells crews to print every direction. Download the map before you leave town. Your phone's GPS still shows where you are with no signal. The map shows the 2026 course and aid stations: the handbook for 2027 isn't out yet.

The first 37 miles, to Long Creek, are almost all singletrack, and the grades are steep the whole way. You climb over Coosa Bald early, and most of the singletrack is the Duncan Ridge and Benton MacKaye Trails. Keep your poles stowed until White Oak, the first aid station.

From Long Creek to about mile 55 it eases onto roads and dirt roads, then the long Nimblewill climb starts, also on dirt road. After the Nimblewill aid station you get about 5 miles of technical, rolling singletrack to Amicalola. Once you cross the paved road in the park, the last 4 miles or so drop 1,000 ft on rough trail, climb 1,000 ft back up the stairs by the falls, and drop another 1,000 ft to the finish. The bridge over the creek is closed off, so you wade it.

Each cutoff is the time you have to leave that station by. Halfway House is water only, and the Visitors Center at mile 69.25 is just a cutoff. The stops here are from the 2026 aid station chart.

Registration

Entry is on UltraSignup. The 2027 race costs $265, comes with a hat and a pint glass, and has sold out, but the waitlist is open. Registration closes the night before the race. Since August 25, 2026, Run Bum Races gives no refunds, transfers or deferrals except in a few cases its policy lists; you can buy SPOT refund protection at checkout.

Every runner has to put in 6 hours of trail work or volunteering at any trail race between one race and the next, or pay $20, which goes to the Benton MacKaye Trail Association or Georgia SORBA.

Getting to the start

Blairsville is 99 miles north of Atlanta on US 19. Race weekend runs out of the finish, Amicalola Falls State Park near Dawsonville. Packet pickup is in the lodge on Friday from 4 to 7 PM, and you need to collect your bib and spike yourself, with government ID. The runner and crew meeting is there at 7 PM, and both are mandatory. There's no race-morning pickup.

On race morning a shuttle (bought separately) takes runners from Amicalola to the start. The handbook has the buses leaving at 2:50 AM, and anyone not aboard by 2:45 gets left. If someone drives you instead, it's drop and go by 4:30 AM, with no parking at the farm. There's no shuttle back after the race and no overnight parking at Amicalola.

Crewing

Each runner gets one crew vehicle, and it can only go to the stations that runner is allowed. On the first half, crews reach Skeenah Gap and Point Bravo only with a shuttle pass bought ahead in the race's UltraSignup store, priced per person. You park at Skeenah Campground and ride the bus in with what fits on your lap.

On the second half, bib numbers split runners into two groups: group 1 sees its crew at Winding Stair, group 2 at Jake Bull, and a crew at the wrong one gets its runner disqualified. Everyone can meet at the Visitors Center and the finish.

Never drive Winding Stair Gap Road (USFS 77) or Noontootla Road (USFS 58), which are on the course. The road into Jake Bull is dirt and varies year to year; the crew guide recommends 4x4 but says all-wheel drive makes it. Pacers aren't allowed anywhere.

Weather and mandatory gear

The race calls late March in North Georgia a wildcard: it has been hot, cold, wet and dry over the years. Blairsville's March normals run from a high of 60°F to a low of 34°F, and the ridge above the Nimblewill climb is open to the wind and very cold every year, according to the race. Runners finishing in the dark should leave Winding Stair or Jake Bull with real warm layers.

Gear is checked at packet pickup: a headlamp with spare batteries, carried start to finish; a weatherproof jacket; a warm hat or buff; gloves; a space blanket; a whistle; at least 22 oz of water; a collapsible cup; and the spike. Drop bags go to Point Bravo (mile 27.25) and Jake Bull (mile 51) in clear, labeled zip bags.

Saturday, March 27, 2027, starting at 5:00 AM at Byron Herbert Reece Farm near Blairsville. Packet pickup is the Friday before at Amicalola Falls Lodge.

Is the Georgia Death Race a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finish the 2027 race in under 24 hours and you get one ticket in the lottery for the 2028 Western States Endurance Run. It's been a qualifier for ten years.

Can you have a pacer at the Georgia Death Race?

No. Pacers aren't allowed at any point, and a runner found with one is disqualified.

What is the railroad spike for?

You get a 1 lb railroad spike at packet pickup and carry it the whole race. At the finish you put it in a coffin and get an engraved spike for finishing.

Is there cell service on the Georgia Death Race course?

Some. The handbook lists Verizon service at White Oak, Mulky Gap, Skeenah Gap, Sapling Gap and Long Creek, and spotty service at Winding Stair, Jake Bull and Amicalola. The crew guide says Jake Bull has none. Download the course map before you go.

What are the cutoffs?

25 hours overall, so the finish closes at 6:00 AM Sunday. The 2026 chart had 11 cutoffs along the way, from White Oak at 7:50 AM to the Visitors Center at 5:00 AM, each a time to leave the station.
