Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon course maps

Three races down the Khumbu valley to Namche Bazaar on May 29, two of them starting on the glacier at Everest Base Camp.

May 29, 2027 Khumbu, Nepal

The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is run every May 29, the day Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary reached the top of Everest in 1953. The first race was a test run on May 19, 2003, and the organizer counts 2027 as its 22nd edition.

The 70K and the full marathon start at Everest Base Camp, at 5,364 m, after two nights in tents on the Khumbu Glacier. The half marathon starts at Dingboche. All three finish in Namche Bazaar, at 3,440 m, mostly downhill on the trekking trails between Sherpa villages.

Each race page shows its course on an embedded AllTrails map, but there's no GPX to download and no list of aid stations. The lines on this map come from those AllTrails maps, which start a little over a kilometer up the glacier from Base Camp. The checkpoints are the villages marked on each race's elevation chart, placed on those lines at the chart's distances. Two on the 70K are the exception: its map puts Phortse Tenga at 61.1 km and Mong La at 63.1 km, where the chart says 55.9 and 60.4. The cutoffs come from the race pages. KE Adventure, one of the organizer's agents, says there are checkpoints and drink stations along the way. Download the map before you fly to Lukla: GPS shows where you are on it without a signal, and the lodges up the valley charge for wifi.

The 70K follows the marathon down from Base Camp to Dingboche, then turns east to Chhukung, at 4,730 m, before coming back down past Pangboche. From Phortse it climbs to Nha La and Machhermo, at 4,413 m, drops to Phortse Tenga and climbs again to Mong La before the run in through Kyanjuma to Namche. The organizer bills it as a different route from the usual Base Camp trek, through other villages.

There are two cutoffs: Pangboche by 11:30 AM and Machhermo by 5:00 PM. Get to Namche before 11:59 PM to count as a finisher. To enter, you need at least one 100K finish, and you send the organizer your running history with links to the results.

You start on the glacier at Base Camp at 7:00 and cross to Gorak Shep, the roughest footing of the day. From there it's the trekking trail down past Lobuche and Thukla to Dingboche, where the course adds an uphill loop to Bibre, then on to Pangboche.

The climb through the forest to Tengboche Monastery is the one to save legs for: miss its 4:00 PM cutoff and you're out. After Tengboche the trail drops steeply to the river and climbs back to Kyanjuma for the last traverse into Namche. Expect yaks and trekkers on the trail.

Everest Marathon Half Marathon

Dingboche to Namche Bazaar, 21 km and 7 m, for runners from outside Nepal.

The half starts at Dingboche, about halfway along the full marathon, and follows it down to Namche. The organizer adds 7 m to the 21 km, for three sevens and a fourth, numbers with meaning in Buddhism.

It's mostly downhill, but it has the same climb to Tengboche and the same 4:00 PM cutoff there, then the drop to the river and the climb to Kyanjuma. Wear trail shoes with grip. Only runners from outside Nepal can enter it.

How to enter

You sign up online, or email the registration, KYC, medical and payment forms, before April 30, 2027. Places are limited and go to the earliest sign-ups, and a place is only held once you pay a USD 500 deposit, which isn't refunded. The rest is due by May 1. Cancel before April 1 and you get half back, less the deposit; after that, nothing.

Foreign runners can book one of the organizer's packages. The lodge package, May 16 to June 3 for $2,995, covers the flights to Lukla, lodges, permits and the trek up, and the join at base camp option, May 27 to 30, is $999. You can also book through the organizer's agents in Australia, China, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK and the US. Everyone needs a doctor's certificate that you're healthy and comfortable at altitude, and you must be 18 or over.

Getting to the start

You fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, 35 minutes, or from Ramechhap, a 5 to 6 hour drive from Kathmandu. The lodge package then walks you up over 10 days: Phakding, Namche with a rest day, Khumjung, Deboche, Dingboche with another rest day, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, then Kala Patthar at 5,545 m on the way to Base Camp, with a rest day there before the race.

Lukla flights depend on the weather, and the organizer builds two spare days into the return. Book your flight home after the package ends. A helicopter out of Lukla costs about USD 600 a seat when it's full.

Weather and kit

The organizer says May is mostly clear, 10 to 20°C in the day and -5 to -10°C in the mornings and at night, depending on altitude and wind. Clear nights at camp can drop to -2 to -8°C, and a foot or two of snow can still fall in late spring. Namche averages a 14.3°C high and a 3.7°C low in May. Above 3,400 m the sun is strong: bring sunscreen of SPF 30 to 50.

Bring a four or five season down sleeping bag. Porters carry your bag, with a 15 kg limit, so you only carry a daypack on the trek. Lodges charge for wifi, hot showers and charging your phone.
